Ai only gave a quick smile in return, as she trotted off in the direction of the fjords. Since it was daylight, she chose to keep to as many shadows as possible. She was a fighter, and of her ranking she should not be seen with culls. She took a glance behind her to make sure Dak was following her. A thought flashed into her mind of just how happy he was with that small amount of kibble in his maw. It took little to make them happy, apparently.

Down the cobblestone roads, and past a few buildings in the settlement, the scent of stale water was entering the air. They were getting closer.

“Recognize anything yet?” The female asked.

Dak was trying his hardest not to drool all over the little bag in his jaws. Just the weight of it between his teeth was enough to put an extra kick in his step and wag in his tail.

He had no problems following behind the fighter female. Was it a show of his lack of masculinity? Maybe, but it was smart. Ai was bigger, stronger, and more importantly, trained. If there was trouble, the most Dak could do was slap someone in the face with his new kibble bag weapon, and even then it wouldn't be very hard. So yes, she could be the big brave female, and he'd follow her happily.

He peered up at the buildings around them and hummed, trying to remember. It was still a bit dark, but he thought he made out a familiar sign. "Yeah, I think that's where my human buys her water." It was strange water, with a bitter scent and a horrid taste, but she enjoyed to treat herself to it when they had the extra money.

Ai nodded, as she kept walking. Her golden eyes gazed at the store sign, not really recongnzing the place, but if Dak was sure, she’d keep walking. The cobblestone soon turned to a dirt path, the cold of the stone being replaced with dry warm dirt. Soon, the land became a little marshier, and the sounds of light waves hitting a shoreline could be heard. Wind was beginning to pick up as well, they were definitely close to the fjords.

“I don’t know exactly where you live, but the fjords are no more than a few minutes walk from her. My owner’s mistress stays near the place where the water mokai hang out and find the shiny rocks in the water. I can lead you there, but do you know how to get home from there?”

"The pearls?" He knew the place well. How often did he sit there, admiring the pearl divers and wishing he could be nearly as useful? Far too often to be healthy, surely, but often enough to know if way home. He nodded with a bit of confidence. "I can get home from there."

Really, he was pretty sure he could get home from here, but he didn't want to take the chance. If he got lost again and a less accepting mokai, or even a human, found him... he was too paranoid to take the chance. It helped that he was somewhat enjoying his company as well. She was kind, despite her outward rough edges. At the very least, she had compassion.

"Thank you," he said, dropping the bag of food so he could adjust his grip on it. "For helping me."

“Good.” She wouldn’t be much help after the fjords, unfortunately. One day she needed to venture out there, get to know the lands. Perhaps that was something to be done when the next pearl diving tournament rolled around. She was sure Leticia Lindon would drag her husband, and then her husband would drag Ai along.

Just over a hill, Ai spotted the waters of the fjords. Something about the seemingly endless seas frightened her. She couldn’t swim, and she wouldn’t start learning how to do it soon. She was quite happy to stay on the shores, and watch the others do their thing.

Giving a brief nod the other, she smiled. “You’re welcome. But…keep this between you and I, okay? I don’t want my reputation in the pits to know I am a softie for culls.” Ai smirked, bringing a paw up to Dak’s head and giving it a ruffle. “I’ll see you around, kid. Enjoy your meal.”

“If you ever need me again, you know where to find me.”

Soft spot for culls? Who had a soft spot for culls? It was a bit of an eye-opener in the least. Things weren't all bad.

The lapping waters were comfort to him. They were the confident embrace of his human, the promise of a future, and the certainty of stability. The water would never stop rolling over those soft sands. Stability. Very important.

He gave her a soft smile a bowed his head respectfully, only ducking away from her when she ruffled his head fur. He laughed and bounced a little. "I'll keep that in mind, Ai." Time to go home and shake off the anxiety.
