The teenager stilled suddenly at her words. In his mind the nightmare that ripped itself from Merci's head stared at him. It's odd tentacles still reaching for him when he shut his eyes on a cold night. 'Oh yes... His voice was flat, and there was no mistaking that he knew from experience. His body trembled when he turned back around to look at another thing that had clawed itself from the depths of nightmares. 'Dreams aren't figments of your imagination. Dark things can come from them, and when they do, it's truly terrible.' There as no room for doubt in his voice. 'I know, I've seen it happen.' Dio had a haunted look in his eyes, and he quickly looked away.

He needed to change the subject, to something, anything else. The black fiend could feel the cold knot in his stomach, and he didn't want to be afraid anymore. 'There are those who want to protect us, and we try and protect each other a bit. Since you haven't met many of us I bet you would be surprised to find out just how many there are.' Of course, none of them knew who this was. They would probably be really nice to her. 'I don't even think I've met everyone.' He furrowed his brows and thought about it, then started ticking off fiends on his fingers. 'There is Mystic, Hawk, Red, Tek, Bloo, Sulfur, Coal, Nephrite, and Citrine. Though I haven't met her for awhile. I know I'm forgetting a few, who else. Oh yeah Ruku, Nell, Mimitite and Ruti! He concluded the list and his brow smoothed. 'I'm sure there are more then that, but those are the ones I've met.' It wasn't exactly a good change of subject, but he was hoping if she heard the number of other fiends out there she'd become more interested in them.

It was then his brow furrowed and he leaned forward toward her. So, what is your special power? We all have one you know.' Dio was now just being nosy, but he couldn't fight the curiosity. Plus knowing it later might come in handy. Knowledge was power, that was one thing he'd learned through his short life.

Smokey’s eyes grew wide once more. So it was true, things from dreams could become real! Mya had been telling her otherwise, but, she figured, the woman might just have been trying to soothe her, frightened as she had been upon waking.

She carefully listened to the names Dio recited. Some rang familiar, if only because she recognized them as the names of gems and minerals she’d come across. ‘I’ve only met Coal,’ she said. ‘He liked Mya’s astrolabe. Do … do all of us bear the names of the gems they came from?’ It was hard to tell, actually, with most of the names, and more of a guess from her end.

Upon Dio’s last question, though, the fiendish girl blinked, and then gave the other a blank look. ‘Special power?’ she asked, her confusion blatantly obvious. ‘Well, I can merge with shadows, and go through walls and stuff, but I bet you can do that too? So it’s not really special.’ She shook her head. ‘I can’t think of anything else really. What is it that you can do?’ Maybe that would help her figure it out.

Dio gestured for the girl to follow him as he moved along the bookshelves. 'We all bear the names of our stones, or nicknames our guardians gave us. None of us remember things about our pasts, at least not a first.' The teenager didn't give more information then that. He didn't want to say something that might accidentally help her in any way. Let her suffer through the insecurity and frustration he'd had to go through. Hell he was STILL going through it. If he didn't find something about the Crux today he was definitely going to have to harass the Athan man.

The black fiend paused for a moment and looked over his shoulder at Smokey. 'The stars talk to me. They tell me things and I can hear the songs they sing. Here look at my arm.' Dio turned and offered his left arm to her. When he moved and the light caught his skin, the little pinpricks of light seemed more pronounced. 'It's a star chart, under my skin. I don't know why it's there exactly, just that they are a part of me, and I'm a part of them.' He watched her for a moment to gauge her reaction. He spoke again, but his voice was quiet, 'You really don't have a special power? Most of the fiends I've met have something that makes them different somehow.' It made him feel a little better, knowing that whatever made him so god awful powerful before seemed to not translate over to her.

Smokey rubbed the back of her neck, and then she went to pick up Anjalee’s anklet for a second time before she followed after Dio, her bare feet soundlessly padding across the floor. There was just something about this boy’s behavior which ticked her off, but she was one quick to forgive and forget, and easily distracted on top of that.

Especially by something as awesome as a star chart on one’s arm.

‘That is awesome!’ Smokey declared quite promptly, ogling the star gazer’s arm. She’d seen people with tattoos, but this was different. They really looked like really real stars. ‘Much more awesome than my markings,’ she emphasized. ‘And really, they talk and sing to you?’ She shook her head. ‘I can’t do anything special like that.’ It would be rather cool if she could. ‘What can the others do?’ Maybe that would help her figure it out ...

Or, maybe she really just didn’t have any special ability.

Maybe only shadows with a guardian got to be special like that?

The teenager moved his arm, and he turned it a bit so she could see all of it. 'Yes, sometimes it's a bit overwhelming. There are many of them and only one of me. Sometimes they all want to talk at the same time, and it gives me a headache.' He watched her for a moment, if she'd been another child, he might have hummed one of the tunes he heard from the heavens. Being no one but who she was however, he was not about to share something so special. It was the one thing in the world that gave him solace, and he couldn't forget those eyes. No matter how sweet and innocent she might pretend to be, there was a reason her stone was stained the color it was.

Dio finally pulled his arm away and turned back to the shelves. When he was much younger he'd become proficient at browsing and talking. 'As for the others I'm not sure. I know what a few of them are capable of, but not many.' Which was also somewhat true, he wasn't about to tell her everyone's gifts. If there was one thing the black fiend knew how to be, it was vague. He'd learned that particular trick from Hawk. 'Super strength, The ability to see dreams, visions of the possible future...' He trailed off and then his brows furrowed and his voice was full of amusement, 'Though one of them I think has a talent for breaking things, I think he has some ability with machines and the like. Though really breaking things seems to be something that all of us are good at in one way or another.' His fingers liberated another book and he flipped some pages, instead of returning it to the shelf however he tucked it under his arm and continued on. Obviously that one was a keeper.

‘That’s amazing,’ Smokey once more voiced her awe. ‘And that other stuff sounds amazing too, especially the super strength.’ Now wouldn’t that be cool? Unfortunately, she wasn’t very strong at all.

‘But I really can’t do anything like that. Maybe it’s because I don’t have a guardian-person anymore?’ she mused aloud. ‘Maybe I could find me a new one …’

But that would probably mean she’d share her nightmares again, wouldn’t it? She really didn’t want for anyone to go through what she had to go through almost every other night. ‘But I wouldn’t want for anyone to see my dreams …’ she said, picking up on one of the ‘special abilities’ Dio had mentioned.

Curiously she eyed the book the other had just picked from the shelf, trying to see if there was anything interesting on the cover. Most books had pretty covers at least, and she had been very disappointed to find out that most were usually filled only with boring letters and no pictures at all.

Dio turned away from the shelf and he looked right at Smokey. Knowing that she was haunted by something did make him feel better a little bit. At least it seemed Karma wouldn't let this soul go completely unpunished. 'I'm pretty sure that the abilities we have aren't tied to our guardians.' He remembered singing, and hearing the stars in his dream. If that really was some sort of memory, then he'd been able to talk to the stars before his life now.

The teenager paused for a moment and he looked down at his book. 'If you don't want your dreams anymore you should probably go to Twilight Designs. I know that there is someone there now that doesn't dream at all, ever.' Why he said that, he didn't know. Dio wasn't a hurtful creature deep down inside, but he was almost sorry he'd told her as soon as he had. 'Maybe they would know how to take away your dreams.' If there was anyone in the world that could make sure that the evil inside the creature in front of him stayed dormant, it was the Athan man. Of that, Dio was unwaveringly sure.

‘Hrm,’ Smokey said, idly inspecting the anklet for damage. If it had been damaged somehow, she’d have to make up for it. ‘Then maybe I really can’t do anything special.’

‘Someone who doesn’t dream at all?’ Her mental voice sounded a little shocked. Despite those nightmares plaguing her to the extent sometimes she was only just barely able to tell what was real, and what had been the dream, she still had normal dreams as well. For her nights to be blank, to just sleep and dream of nothing … that was a scary prospect by itself. She wasn’t sure if she’d want that. But it might be worth and inquiry, at the very least. ‘I’ll make sure to go and have a look then,’ she said.

The teenager nodded a bit in response. He felt a bit awkward floating there. He couldn't really think of anything to say. His burgundy eye fixed on Smokey and he sighed a bit. 'I think this is all I want for today.' He gestured with his hand to the book he'd started carrying around. The fingers of his free hand moved into the purple wrap he had on around his waist. They pulled back out, and there was a card between them, one that he obviously carried around with him. 'I should go pay for it. Here, this has the address of the store. It's not too far away from where we are now, so you shouldn't have a hard time finding it. If you need anything, you should go there.' He didn't like the idea of this particular soul running around without being watched carefully. Dio had no idea if the Athan man had been keeping tabs, but he knew he'd feel better if he knew where she was.

The rainbow sparkling in his hair shifted as he turned and floated away a few steps. 'It was nice to meet you Smokey. Next time I go there, I'll bring some of the comic books I've collected. You can read through them, they're a lot of fun. I think they're more your speed.' With a wave to her, Dio cruised off toward the register. His tail flipped around the corner of the bookshelves, and just like that he disappeared from sight.

Smokey carefully inspected the card, thoughtfully turning it this way and that. She couldn’t read it of course, but it looked pretty, all glossy and stuff, with a very nice design. And, well, she could still make Mr. Tiger tell her what it said and help her find that shop.

She looked up to thank Dio, but he was already gone.
