She shook her head at him as he looked away, slowly, causing the ends of her dreads to brush the top of the couch cushions in a soft swishing noise. It was the only sound that filled the strained silence between them and as it stopped, she found that the silence was just too much. They were both on the verge of something and unwilling to say it.
"You follow your heart, Khaldun, if you're wrong then you just have to learn from the mistake." Her hands fell into her lap and her eyes followed them, watching as her fingers flexed and unflexed the perfect, unmarred skin. It had been such a simple choice in the heat of the moment but now, alone in a place that had once been home, she felt lost. She was lost.
"You just want someone normal. I can't blame you for that." The sound in her voice was a strained defeat. "Some days I wonder what life would be like if I could have been normal, and not.." She trailed off as the emotions roiled with every word. Her hands shifted. Finally she just leaned out to start packing away all the little pieces of the first aid kit, carefully putting them in their places with more attention than was necessary.
Had she always been so flustered at times like these? She couldn't even remember was was normal and what was an over reaction.

It was easy for her to say that, when she always seemed to know where she was going and how to get there. Had she ever made a mistake in her life, a truly monumental one? He was drawn toward the confidence in her, the stability. His life was chaos. Kaia was purposeful, graceful, calm. But this time it was clear they had the same thing on their minds.
He turned back toward her when her voice faded away, his gaze followed the dainty movement of her hands. She was going to run out of things to put back in the kit soon, and once it closed she'd find a polite way to tell him his time was up and that he'd better leave. And of course he would, and any time they crossed paths again after that they would both perform the short but awkward verbal shuffle of two people who knew it was far too late to change. And he spend the rest of his presumably short life wishing he had done something, anything but sit there overcome with apprehension and self-loathing the one moment it would count to do something, anything else--
"Take me back."
Khaldun's hand settled on top of one of Kaia's as it rested just above the mess of medical supplies, trying to close his fingers sideways around hers and brushing bandages against her knuckles.

Her body froze as his hand settled on hers and a surge of energy swirled through the cavity of her chest, making her tortured heart beat a struggling pulse against her rib cage. Beneath her glamour she knew her skin was alight with it, but thankfully she didn't have to let him see that embarrassing side effect. He probably would have changed his mind.
That thought alone made her sigh and shut her eyes, though her hand stirred beneath his, flexed and curled inside his palm just for the touch of his skin.
"It's not that easy," she breathed finally. Her bright eyes glanced sideways and up at him, tracing the familiar contours of his face with her gaze, picking out the scars and flaws that she had come to adore. He was still Khaldun, familiar and comfortable. What was she? Different, complicated, confusing. "Nothing will ever be easy for me again, or for us if you walk this road with me. You haven't even seen the tip of the iceberg, Khal."
Her eyes fell then, away from him and to their hands where they merged atop the pile of supplies. That same troubled, pained look crossed her face and she finally just shut her eyes against it all. She desperately needed him to finally be the support in their almost ruined relationship but she knew that was a far cry for him. He was always the one that needed her, how could she expect him to suddenly become the pillar?
"As much as I want to, I don't think you know what you're saying."

The force of the rejection hit him like a truck. Despite himself, he'd gambled what little hope he'd had on this chance, and it made losing that much worse. The fingers that had been pressing against Kaia's feverishly warm skin seemed to go slack and lose their grip entirely. He felt like she was just tormenting him now, for his mistake, drawing his heart close and then pushing it away at the last moment. A simple yes or no would have sufficed.
"Then show me. No more surprises. I'm done with not being told the whole story. If it's true that I don't know what I'm talking about, if it's really too much, then I'll stay out of your life. I'll never bother you again. We'll go our separate ways."
He withdrew his hand completely, as if for emphasis, leaving Kaia's alone among the bottles and bandages. It came to rest folded across his lap.
"So try me."
There was a glimmer of intensity to his eyes, but the rest of him was weighed down heavily by how grim his prospects were.

Kaia was left staring at her hand, alone among the half-packed bandages, suddenly colder for the lack of his warmth. It seemed like a symbol for how her life could go from this point. Did she really want to do this alone?
She finally pulled her hand into her lap and sat back into the couch as her thoughts whirled and buzzed inside her head. She knew the easiest way to make him understand but she also knew that it would be one last, very big surprise. Not to mention, everything he'd ever said about senshi made her think that was completely and utterly a horrible idea.
Oh well.
"Alright, but remember that you asked." And before he could say a word in protest, her glamour dropped and her hand reached out to take his again forcefully. That same swell of energy poured outward from her chest, lighting up the cracks along her flesh like fire. Then they vanished.
