Tony smiled as she took the doll, glad to see her coming out of her shell a little bit. He hoped, at least. From what he had heard, and what he assumed, this had to be a good step for her after what she had been through. He only wanted to help, and to make her feel better.

He started to panic when she began to cry.

"Oh! Yvette!"

Okay, it certainly was not going the way he had hoped, and he tried to figure out what to do as she sobbed. Dogby on her leash, Tony put the little girl dog on the floor and let her stand near them. For her part, the corgi wiggled over toward Yvette and leaned against her leg to comfort her.

"Don't cry," Tony said softly, putting his arms around her and pulling her into a safe hug, rubbing her back reassuringly, "you're okay. It's okay." He wasn't sure what to do, so he let her cry as much as she needed to. Both Darrows, Tony and Dogby, wanted to comfort her.

It was pretty much impossible to explain why she was crying. It wasn't like Mr. Darrow would really understand how intense the surge of emotions were down to her heart. She made do with the simple things, or in many cases, she had to make the "nice" things for herself. Sure, some of her closer friends gave her things on occasion. Usually they were treats she usually didn't get, like pastries and candies.

She wasn't used to getting anything so indulgent as a toy dog.

She hadn't done anything that deserved anything that nice. Mr. Darrow was just being too nice.

With his arms wrapped about her in an effort to calm her down, she eventually managed to hiccup out "...you... don't have to-hic... I... I'm okay... I promise..." She was still crying into his arms, and now she had a cuddly dog that was rubbing up against her leg.

"..you're b-being too nice..."

"Oh Yvette," he laughed, patting her on the shoulder as he drew back and held her at arm's length. "You're always nice, maybe too nice, to everyone else. You deserve someone to return the favor sometimes. And anyway, after taking care of Dogby so long, and so well, you deserve it."

He smiled at her brightly, then straightened up, letting her hang on to his clothes if she wanted. Dogby looked up and Tony took a step, which prompted Dogby to try and shoot off ahead like they were going on a walk. She didn't get too far, and had to significantly lower her pace.

"Now, let's go pay for that and get you home. I think you're a little overwhelmed. But getting out now and then is good for you. And now that I'm back..." he would protect her. Keep her safe so nothing terrible ever happened to her again.

He knew it was an impossible goal, trying to protect all his friends from everything, but people like Yvette, like Kyndall and Harmony, didn't deserve to be dragged into this war. They were innocent and helpless, and it was his duty to help them.

As a friend.

"You can come to the library any time you want to get out of the house, and play with Dogby." At least she could have a normal safe haven of sorts.

No matter how much anybody ever told her she deserved something, there was always that little nagging doubt somewhere in her head that seemed to think they couldn't really mean it. They were just trying to say it to make her feel better about the whole ordeal. Trying to dry those tears so they wouldn't feel bad about her crying in the first place.

She wanted to believe they had no ill will towards her. Yet it was just something she could never truly get over.

Even now as Mr. Darrow attempted to explain she was a good kid, she still didn't feel as much at ease as he probably wanted. He was probably right though. This probably was too overwhelming.

Feebly, she nodded her head and let out a simple "...kay..." to let him know that they could leave. Maybe she wasn't ready to go out today, but at least she had a new stuffed friend who would keep her company at home.

Dogby Junior.

Tony smiled and led her to the check out. He brought another toy for them to ring up, so she didn't have to let go of Dogby junior. The teller told him his daughter was cute, and he had a tough time explaining that she wasn't his daughter. She was his... dog sitter? Library friend?

Once it was paid for, he walked Yvette back to her house, where he imagined she really wanted to be. Still, things hadn't gotten too terribly bad, and he smiled as he knocked on the door.

Then thought she might have a key to her own house and thus the knocking was unnecessary.

"I'm sorry if this little trip scared you, Yvette," he said, kneeling slightly so he could be closer to her height. "But you do need to let yourself come out, and live a normal life. I know things can be scary, and dangerous, but you have places you can go where you'll be safe. The library is one of them."

Dogby yipped for no real reason, just wanting to join in on the conversation as she was beginning to suspect she had been forgotten: they walked all the way here and still no one had pet her or even talked to her. That was unacceptable.

Her tears hadn't dried up, so her cheeks were quite streaked when they were paying for the toy. She probably looked as if she was just having a bad day. Of course, her cheeks felt absolutely hot the moment the mistake had been made of Tony being the girl's Daddy.

Daddy was Daddy, not Mr. Darrow!

At least nobody could tell she was blushing underneath the crying.

It was during the walk home that her tears finally managed to disappear, evaporating from her cheeks. Though the librarian's words were nothing but kind, it almost seemed as if the girl completely ignored them.

She had one final question before Mr. Darrow left. "...can I give Dogby a goodbye kiss?"

Tony smiled and nodded his head, picking up Dogby and offering the wiggling, happy dog to her. Dogby yipped excitedly, trying to lick Yvette, though she was just short of being able to no matter how she strained her head forward.

She loved Yvette, and was happy to see that she was happier.

Tony didn't mind that Yvette hadn't responded. He imagined she was just trying to process things slowly, and needed to focus on things that made her happy and comfortable at the moment. He'd let her do that, and if she wanted to say goodbye to Dogby then what was the harm in that?

He was glad to be home, to have his dog back, and to be able to catch up on what he had missed while being away. There was a lot of things he felt bad about, for missing, for not being able to stop, or start, but his duties had called him away and he did what he could.

He could only make up for the rest as best he could, and hope things turned out okay.

It took a little bit of juggling, but soon enough Yvette had two Dogbys in her arms. The slightly more active one received a light peck of a kiss to the head and replied with a massive face-bath for the girl. A couple tiny giggles escaped her before the door was opened behind them.

"...that is a nice sound to hear..." the woman at the door said in a quiet voice.

As if she had been caught doing something bad, the girl squirmed slightly before giving the dog back to Mr. Darrow. In her tiny voice, she let out a simple "Thank you!" before excusing herself to return to the sanctity of her house.

"...goodness..." Natasha was shaking her head slightly at the antics of her daughter before she once more let Tony know how much she appreciated his efforts.

The secret knight smiled and watched as Dogby, as usual, solved the problem for him. He really should let her run his PR campaign, as she was a much more efficient problem solver than he could ever hope to be.

Laughing himself, he took Dogby back as she was offered, receiving a whine from her for his troubles, and nodded his head at her thank you. He watched Yvette run back inside, then stood and smiled at Natasha. As was becoming habit while in uniform, he bowed a bit, shaking his head and laughing, saying it was no trouble.

He promised he would return to visit, then excused himself and, carrying Dogby in his arms, made to head home. He had missed his dog, and wanted to take her back to their proper home and play fetch with her.

She wasn't very good at fetch. She ran to the toy, barked at it, then made him come get it to throw it again. But it was still fun, and at least they both got exercise. It made trips to the dog park profoundly embarrassing, however.

In any case, he was looking forward to it. Hoping Yvette would be just fine, he walked home in a good mood, smiling all the while.
