Gently nodded her head. She certainly didn't want to bog herself down with a kid if she was too young for one, and in many ways she still was. Sure, she had a lot of responsibility and could take care of the people she cared about well enough, but a baby?

That would be a much bigger step then she had ever taken in her life, even with being recruited into the Negaverse.

"Well, that's good at least," she said, nodding her head. Changing the subject back to theatre was good, she was starting to think she was going baby crazy and that was scaring her. She would focus on other aspects of family first, like finding herself someone she could really love. And who would love her back. Something serious, maybe.

She wasn't very good at serious.

It was lucky Kyndall had offered to share, Gently scooting her chair and her plate closer so they could do just that. It likely would not have stopped her from doing that even if Kyndall hadn't said anything. As far as Gently was concerned, the food was top notch, but she had no previous experience with the style to really judge against.

And she loved food.

"I think this is one of the most fortuitous street bumps I've ever had. So, I guess I have to thank you for making me drop all my papers everywhere. And putting me further behind in my work." She grinned teasingly.

"Anything for the greater good." Kyndall assured. She considered the accident a happy twist of fate herself. She found, to her great surprise, that she was enjoying herself immensely in Gently presence. Maybe it was the similar interests and attitudes they shared. Maybe it was the succinct and open way the Brit spoke and behaved. Or maybe it was just that Kyndall needed more friends and was allowing herself to try and connect to another person in this time of pain.

She was happy to share, eating as much of the food as she could get, passing plates and things back and forth between them. As far as company went this place was wonderful. She wasn't the least bit unsure about that. She ate in silence for a few minutes, musing on her good fortune and making a note to herself to mention the meeting to Alexandre the next time she saw him. He'd be pleased they met, she was sure of it.

"May I ask what you're working on? Are you a journalist?"

She knew there were more jobs at a newspaper than just journalists. She'd never had much luck with journalism as a subject because fiction she could write. Making fact interesting was what eluded her. She often read off facts like checklists, plain and unappealing. That didn't make for a good story and she respected those that did better than she did with it but still didn't read the news much. Fiction was more her flavor where heroes could win and love conquered over everything. She was too much of a cynic to think those things happened in real life anymore. Love was turned away, villains run amok, and people, good people, suffered at the hands of others.

Gently nodded her head, swallowing down a big gulp of food before she spoke again.

"I am a reporter, yes. Kind of. I do the entertainment beat when they let me but mostly it's just pointless busy work. They're mad at me, I think, because I'm falling a little bit behind. But I don't think I really care. I'd like to leave the paper, and focus on other things for a while. I don't think I've found myself in my career, at least, you know?"

She shrugged, sitting back in her seat and sighing contentedly.

"That was brilliant. This place is now on my radar, and we'll have to come here again. Unless you find me completely distasteful, in which case, I will leave now and let you handle the check."

She laughed brightly. She wouldn't of course, leave without at least fighting to pay her share. It wasn't in her to at least not put up a fight. Though, she also wasn't one to fight too hard when someone else could pick up a tab. Her morals were balanced mostly by how she was feeling that day, and subject to change.

"Anyway, at the moment I'm just trying to tread paper, as it were."

I can understand that.” Kyndall said with a nod. There were a lot of times she felt like she was biding her time waiting for her chance. In her case it was the chance to try and pursue her dream again. It didn’t seem likely by now but she never knew. People had been discovered later in life before. Eventually, though, she was afraid she’d have to face the idea that she was not going to be able to accomplish her dream of being a star. That she might have to settle for the off lead in the local production or being the acting wind beneath someone else’s wings.

I’m still not sure if I want to teach children for the rest of my life. I love my job and I worked hard to get there but it was mostly just a quick means to an end when I found out I was having Harmony. I couldn’t raise her waiting on tables and I knew it. It’s certainly not what I had in mind when I moved to Destiny City with my sister.

To mention Syndall twisted her heart and she instinctively grabbed the locket around her neck.

When Gently mentioned being found wanting and parting ways Kyndall let out a rich laugh, easily broken out of her moment of melancholy. She couldn’t imagine a happier coincidence than to have bumped into the amicable reporter and share a good dinner with her. It had killed an hour or two and they’d had a nice conversation, gotten to know each other. She was convinced she couldn’t have enough female friends or adult friends for that matter. She loved her students but trying to speak to them with the frankness she’d been speaking to Gently with and she’d have a lawsuit on her hands.

Oh, my dear Gently, no! I find your company very much to my liking. I do hope I’ll get to enjoy it more often!

And Kyndall absolutely would not allow anyone else to pick up the tab when she’d already offered. It didn’t seem right to take it back. Besides, that’s how she was. Anyone who could brighten up her day with her daughter missing deserved to be compensated for it. No, this was the least she could do. She was grateful to Gently.

We should exchange numbers in case we want to do this again.

"Why Kyndall," Gently said, faking her own English accent and grinning broadly. "Are you going to take me on another date? This is all happening so fast, I hardly know you."

She took out her phone, though, to type in Kyndall's number as it was offered. She didn't know why she was being so silly, but she liked being able to. She missed having friends, she realized. She spent so little time now paying attention to her personal life, outside the Negaverse and those she knew in it, and her friends there.

This didn't feel normal, like the Negaverse did, but maybe that was what she needed. She needed this balance and had forgotten. Changing her job, focusing on something else, playing more than working when she was out of uniform... she needed to do all those things. She would be so much happier if she did.

She gave Kyndall her number. Once the check was taken care of, she was feeling absolutely content. It had been a good day, she decided, and all because she made a new friend.

"I'm glad I met you, Kyndall. Next time you're coming over to my house. I'm learning how to bake cupcakes, and you'll get to suffer through the results! Also, I have video games."

She knew Gently was joking but people assuming she was a lesbian was beginning to become a regular thing and she was becoming slightly concerned about how this assumption seemed to be coming about. Did she put off the vibe? Wear the wrong clothes? Was the fact that she hadn't been on a real honest to God date in longer than she'd care to admit? Or maybe it was the fact that she hadn't been seriously attracted to a man before Tony since her own daughter was in diapers. Whatever it was it fueled her desire to go on a real date soon with someone respectable. Tony be damned. That was a serious dead end street anyway.

"My dear Gently, just don't come to Vegas with me and nothing that can't be fixed will happen to you!"

Kyndall settled the tab and left a generous tip glad to have had the company. Being around another woman her age, unmarried, made her feel like she wasn't so alone. That there was still a chance for her to fulfill her dreams and associate with other women like someone normal who had friends. She gave the Brit her number and then programmed the other's into her own phone. She was determined to use it again soon.

"Cupcakes and video games! Where do I sign up?"

She was horrid at video games. She didn't own any console systems. The last video game she played had 8 bit graphics and a synthesized soundtrack. But the cupcakes sounded good enough if Gently could bake them well. Or learn to. At this point she didn't mind being guinea pig to her experiments. Anything if it meant spending more time around the pleasant woman. As they made their way outside of the restaurant Kyndall noticed a chill in the air and pulled her sweater a bit tighter.

"We should certainly do this again soon."

"I usually say you should take me to dinner first, but you already have! So eloping it is, should we ever find ourselves in Vegas. I know the risk." She laughed and shook her head.

Gently grinned. It had been very fun to hang out with her new friend and she was excited to do it again sometime. Maybe she could have a girl's night in, and invite some of her other friends over so they could all just enjoy some time off. Most of her other friends were from the negaverse, but no one had to know that.

Especially not Kyndall.

And who knew, if she proved to be even more interesting, maybe there was something in her that would work for the negaverse. Always a General, Painite wondered if she might have someone to corrupt on her hands. Another new face for the negaverse?

Maybe later. Right now, she didn't want to share.

Once outside, she smiled and looked at Kyndall as the air blew at them with a chill in it. She shuddered, but it did not lower her mood in the slightest bit. "I'll give you a call soon, then!"
