It didn’t take quite as long for Akairo to answer the lioness this time. The idea of making peace, real peace with the hyenas made sense. It was the rational thing to do. And yet, the light frown on the red lion’s expression indicated that he wasn’t completely comfortable with that notion, that a part of him couldn’t agree with Calypso’s words. But it was logical, it was sensible, it might even be the right thing to do. Just…
“Perhaps. But… I… for me…” he sighed quietly before forcing himself to take one long deep breath. “The new generation might be able to accomplish something like that. Or those so old they’ve seen enough blood to last a lifetime.” But I can’t.
He had known the adolescent whose death had started the war and he saw his twin pretty much every day. He could see how much Samawati was hurting. He remembered the two cubs Waridi had left behind, one of them so much like her father that it was a permanent reminder of what they had lost. So yes, maybe in the future they might find a way to create something akin to diplomacy between the Pridelands and the Mava’bunda but Akairo knew he was still far too angry and too resentful to take any active part in it.
“Maybe you were. Maybe you’re just returning home.” He chuckled a little. The sight of Pride Rock, the symbol of his pride, glowing in the sun was almost enough to drive any negative thought right out of his mind. “Do you want to stop for a moment before I take you there? That’s where the King is.” Akairo leaned back as if to sit if Calypso agreed. His breathing had returned to its normal rhythm and he wondered if the lioness needed a moment. Even though he’d lived all his life in the Pridelands, he felt there was nothing quite like this majestic landscape. “So… does it make you change your mind about joining?” he gave her a little wink as he chuckled again and his bright green eyes returned to Pride Rock.

"Home." The word left a bitter taste on her tongue, and caused Calypso to take a stern survey of the land. For all it's beauty, it had survived a war, and possible others, without falling. Would her pride have looked like this if they had survived? If they had better intel? Calypso stopped herself. Once she started on that path it wouldn't be easy to stray from it, and for now she wanted to take in as much of this warmth as possible.
Seeing her chance, Calypso nodded and sat, looking up at the dark red lion with a smile. Her eyes had started to drift again before his question caught her off guard. She laughed. "Persistent, aren't you?" She grinned, her crimson eyes twinkling with mirth. "Okay, so maybe I might want to stay a little longer now, but-" she tipped her head "-not forever. Not yet, at least. Though, I'll have to admit that your sales pitch is top notch."

“Not forever.” Akairo agreed seriously but he had an amused expression as he said it and the grin that followed quickly betrayed his thoughts. He got the feeling the orange lioness was wavering which the young lion counted as a win in his favor. He could see her fitting in perfectly in the Pridelands and while getting new members after the war wasn’t exactly a priority, Calypso was tough and beautiful… who wouldn’t want her to join their pride?
The red lion sat down and let his eyes wander through the landscape and occasionally to the lioness beside him. Silently, he thought he could travel the rogue lands for an eternity and never find a more beautiful place anywhere else in the world. - FIN -
