Joshua Harvey liked to wander about.
He'd ended up in Aquarius today, looking for things to fix, when the scream of the frustrated senshi caught his attention. Uh ?
Uh, well then. He wasn't sure he'd understood all that, but nonetheless he went to the courtyard, leaving his toolbelt behind. He just hoped he could run in sneakers without sliding all over the place.
And well, that this wasn't all about running. Intelligence was perhaps his best bet.

Veer Gill's goal wasn't so much to help out so much as it was to win. He viewed this mess as, more or less, a replacement for the WoW he was desperately missing at this point: a quest given out by an authority figure, the goal itself not yet clear but certainly something interesting. He knew objectively that participation would yield to a reward, or XP, but on some level -- well. He could pretend. It'd make his life more interesting.
He made a noise as he settled next to Joshua, very much willing to give him a hard time. Intelligence was his forte, definitely. And he was sure he was the best at it.

Ricky Cunningham had been discouraged many times in his life. He was told he had little intelligence was certainly uncreative, but that at least he was strong - and that counted for something. Ricky found it to be true, where he had shortcomings in mental capacity, he was able to make up for it in muscle. As such, he felt it was eager to test his athleticism in the challenge, especially in competition against friends he had made such as Josh and Veer.

Flannery Spicer had always been told one thing about her creativity: "That's nice, dear."
Flannery wasn't much of a reader; to be honest, she wasn't entirely sure she cared about Aquarius's books or the language they were written in. But adventure? That was awesome, man. That was her siren song.

THE DESERT MOAT
As the civilians assembled themselves, they moved farther forward to see what they were pitting their skills against. Directly in front of them, the white, snowy sands gave way to a darker band, a stretch of sand that was somehow murkier and thicker — almost swampy. Aquarius had warned them about obstacles — did that mean this was quicksand?
At about ten feet across, the moat was far too wide to be crossed in a leap of faith. They’d have to use a bit more brute force then that, then — but how to do it? Looking around, eventually each of them spotted a loose pile of objects sitting far off to one side. None of them looked particularly wieldy, frankly, but no one could quite imagine what other options they had, short of attempting to throw each other. Given the occasional cactus lying in wait on the far side, this idea seemed less than ideal.
They’d have to try and get across using the things that had been left lying around in the area — no matter how difficult that looked.
[PLAYERS: You must cross the sand moat — about ten feet across — without getting bogged down in sand. You may use any of the objects lying nearby, listed below — there are just enough for each of you.
Nearby objects: * 12-foot Stone Plank: Far too heavy to ever lift and use as a weapon, but just light enough to push. You can try to shove this across to the far side and walk across it like a bridge. It’s only about four inches wide, however — so be careful you don’t slip and fall in the sand when you try to cross. You may take exactly one, dragging or pushing it with all your strength. * Unsinkable Rocks: You don’t know what it is, but these rocks look like somehow they just wouldn’t sink in this weird sand. You could probably drop them spaced out evenly across the moat and try to walk across — but those jumps from rock to rock are going to be tricky. Too hefty and unwieldy to ever be used as a weapon. You may take up to two: after that your arms are too tired to lift any more of them, and who knows how long they actually stay unsinkable for. They — are unsinkable, right? * Surprisingly Sturdy, Absurdly Long Vine: Where did this vine come from? And, well, where does it end? One end seems to just disappear into the ground eventually. The other end is loose, and you could take a shot at tying it into a lasso and throwing it up to hook to the top of the outer wall, then using it to swing across the moat Tarzan-style. Lassoing can’t be that hard, can it?
Feel free to try any one of these methods. Roll a 10-sided die to determine whether or not you successfully crossed the moat.
If you rolled a 4 or higher, your character has successfully crossed the moat (the higher the dice roll, the better their attempt fared). Please wait on the far side for everyone who is able to cross.
IF YOUR CHARACTER IS ADVANTAGED IN ATHLETICS, you only need to roll a 3 or higher to successfully cross the moat. Please wait on the far side for everyone who is able to cross.
If your character fails their dice roll, they are eliminated from the event. They fall into the sand moat on the near, shallow side and must clamber back to shore, caked in wet sand. Your character is fairly sure Aquarius would be upset if they tracked wet sand all over her old research documents, and so they’re forced to turn back and leave the mission in the hands of someone else. Your character returns to the Atrium with pocketfuls of sand to show for their trouble.]

Ricky didn't hesitate to grab the vine. He was a Southern boy, born and raised, and in his time in the south learned a few fun tricks. He learned how to last a long time on a mechanical bull, spit your tobacco into a cup or a bucket with remarkable accuracy, shooting a squirrel running across your lawn, and tie and toss a lasso. Surely wrangling the outer wall would be sinch!
He looped the vine into a lasso to the best of his ability - the vine was far sturdier and heavier than a rope would have been - and tossed it up to the outer wall. It took three tries, but he eventually able to get it hooked on well. He wrapped the loose end of the vine around his waist securely as he backed away from the wall, getting ready for a running start.
"Here goes nuttin'," he muttered as he charged forward, gripping onto the slack of the vine before him. He ran at full speed ahead until he leapt forward mere inches away from the start of the moat, lifting his knees up to his chest as he swung across. "YEEEEEEE-HAWWWWWW!"
He successfully swung across! Except - how does he stop? He started to swing backwards.
"AW FUUUUUUUUUUCK!"
His body swung back onto the closer side of the moat, then started swinging forward once again - this time barely making it over the moat as much momentum was lost. He reached out his feet, skidding against the ground as he came to a halt. He was safe on the other side, although barely made it.
"s**t, son!" he shouted, seemingly unfazed and excited. "When can I do that again?!"

Menthe was neither very brave or very atheletic, so when they reached what looked like quicksand, she didn't seem very excited or enthusiastic about trying to do something about it.
The distance was so wide.. far further then the barely 5 foot secretary could hope to easily cross, and so she was left scavanging for something to help her.
She had read about quicksand once or twice in survival guides, but it had always been 'what to do if you were already accidentally in it'. Relax.. try to use a stick to push yourself, or lay on your back to spread your weight. None of that was helpful now.
Making a plank bridge was a reasonable possibility, but when she tried to push the heavy plank she found it unmoved, her upper arm strength just not capable of the activity.
The vine was immediately counted out. Menthe had NO faith whatsoever in her ability to throw the vine far, let alone in lasso form.
So in the end she went with the rocks, grabbing one and tossing it out into the sand before she went and grabbed the next. She made it out onto the first rock alright, but when she went to throw the second rock out the mixture of the motion and the lack of stablity her heeled shoes offered sent her sliding off backwards in the sand.
Well... atleast she knew how to get out of the sand....
Pulling herself back up onto the shore, Menthe took up the task of trying to get sand off of her. Maybe it was time for a bath or she'd be fighting gritty itty bitty pieces of sand for days. Hopefully the others would far better and be able to help Aquarius!

Bela was looking at the items and had decided to try to walk across the thin rock plank. As she moved, one foot in front of the other she felt herself begin to slip and eventually. SPLASH. Mucky sand-water swelled up like someone had just cannon-balled into it.
Bela make an ick noise as she dragged herself out from the quick sand. "Well.... there goes that adventure." She sat on the stairs trying to dump the sand from her pockets and brush it from her clothing and hair.

Veer's eyes flicked onto Ricky at this first challenge, with a distinct sense of annoyance: they had the dumb athletes there, so why did the smart kids have to play this game, too? That hardly seemed fair. Send the strong ones along and have them carry the others with them -- that was more like it.
An exercise regimen of Cheetos and World of Warcraft were somewhat cancelled out by a fast metabolism, but that didn't mean that Veer was in shape. It didn't mean that he was strong. It meant that by the time he hauled a board over, he was panting, and had to catch his breath before going across.
He grumbled, moved very slowly, and watched the ground below the entire way across. ******** the people who said not to look down. Knowing was better.
((note: I previously rolled a d6 cuz I'm dumb. I deleted, and rerolled the right die.))

...Well. He was quite certain he couldn't jump over this, and also quite certain that this was, in fact, quicksand.
And one look at Ricky tarzan-ing it up was enough for Joshua to decide that he wasn't doing that. Nope. Hellllll no.
No, instead he hauled the plank over, very slowly, and walked it. It wasn't as easy as Joshua had thought it would be, and he had quite a few close calls before he finally reached the other side. In fact, he tried at the end - and would have gotten a facefull of sand if he, well, hadn't been at the end.
s**t, hopefully not all the challenges would be like this !

So the idea of getting a large vine and being all Tarzan like amused Kestrel and well with how bored she had been doing stupid things seemed to make sense. So she grabbed the vine and threw it to the other side of the sand, pulling it like they do in the movies to make sure it was tight enough. After giving it a good tug she was sure that everything would be okay and so she took a running jump.
To fall into the sand.
She climbed out a little annoyed especially when she looked over and saw the ones who had got across.
Well that sucked.
She kicked the ground and headed back, she would just have to find something else to do today.

Marienrode watched those brave enough to go before her with no small sense of trepidation. She'd signed up to make sure the children got across okay--she hadn't exactly reckoned on having to actually get across herself. She let out a small, shuddery sigh and gave those leaving a sympathetic look; there were others who needed her to look after them.
The absurdly long vine swung back her way, and uncertainly she grasped on to the rope. She'd never been particularly good at gym class in high school, to the everlasting despair of her parents, and now it seemed she had to swing her way across... Across this... quicksand... thing. She eyed it, and the vine, but it seemed sturdy enough. It had certainly carried Ricky across fairly well, and she was smaller and lighter than the muscle-bound man.
Well... she had to try, right? Marienrode took a deep breath to put some steal in her spine, and then leapt up so the swing would carry her across and with a breathless shriek she--
She landed on the other side. It wasn't professional perfect, of course, would have merited about a six in a gymnastics competition what with the staggering. But she'd made it across! She dared to exhale the breath she'd been holding and said, "Miraculous."
Hopefully not all the challenges were like that...

Keren couldn't help but grin to herself as the first obstacle was revealed to her. While it was true that none of these ways across were directly related to basketball, Keren had good aim and was best on the team at the rope climb. With that in mind, she took the Surprisingly Sturdy, Absurdly Long Vine, tied a sturdy knot in the loose end, and swung it across the moat. It stuck tight to the outer wall and Keren grinned to herself - so far so good - as she took hold of a nearer section.
She secured the length so that it was tight across the width of the moat, and began to climb, hand over hand, towards the other side. It was careful going, but the vine was taught and didn't burn her hands nearly as much as the rope that hung from the roof of the Crystal Academy gymnasium. Keren was for once grateful to be gifted in the ways of acting like a monkey.
"Good hustle," she told herself when, arms aching, she dropped to the ground on the far side of the moat. Keren glanced around at those who had made it so far, and then back to the far side where it appeared some had yet to try, and some had failed to succeed.
"Come on!" shouted Keren, cupping her hands over her mouth unnecessarily. "It's easy!"

Eliza grinned watched the other's cross the moat excited to try it her wild hair moving about as she bounced about excitedly. She was going to try using the sturdy vine because swinging across looked like just so much fun.
When it was her turn, she made her lasso and tossed it up making sure it held tight. She moved back and ran forward to get a good running start and jumped on the vines. Swing!
Unfortunately little Miss Wild Hair got quite a bit of it right the face as she went to let go of the vine. She misjudged where she was suppose to jump for it, seeing as she couldn't see where she was going, so she fell. Splat! Right into the wet sand.
She laughed lightly pulling herself up and wading her way out. She needed to go find some more less messy clothing now and it might do her well to attempt brushing her hair. Maybe.
She pulled herself out for the gross mess and grinned at the other's, "Good luck guys. Have fun try not to get as messy as I did."
