There was a moment of hesitation before she responded by carefully stepping forward to the very edge of the light - perhaps farther than planned, because she became visible; just barely, but plainly enough to determine that this was not the same doe Chokecherry had followed into the cave. This other doe held her head tilted noticeably to the left, obscuring one eye, and behind the feathers stuck on her head, one could easily see that she had hair, although it was tied carefully out of the way.
The doe, however, seemed to be unaware that she had given herself away, which might have said something about the quality of her eyesight. Still using that passable imitation of Vexed's voice, she said, "I do apologize. I'd forgotten about the rocks up in the front, here. You shouldn't hit anything else if you just follow me."

He stopped for a moment -- looked over his shoulder -- and if the doe's eyesight was bad, she wouldn't see how he paused, looking honestly confused. In other bucks this might have raised a flag of alarm, or maybe they would have gone pelting out of the cave, convinced they were in danger: not so Chokecherry. The berry-splattered buck paused a moment to collect his thoughts, and then frowned. Perhaps the weight of such heavy thought was giving him pause.
If a casual observer might have thought that Chokecherry would state the obvious -- hey, you're not the same doe -- they would be surprised at what he did say: "How could you forget? This is your cave, isn't it?" But he took a step forward, carefully, and then another one.

"In walking past them every day," she said, "I must have taken their existence for granted." She did not notice, or else did not comment on, his pause.
She reached out to gently touch him as soon as he was in reach - in greeting, as a promise of more soft touches to come, and to guide him further into the dark.

This was perfect logic. Chokecherry tossed his head, tossing hair out of his face, and allowed himself to be drawn further in. When she touched him, the gesture made him tingle -- for all that Chokecherry talked a lot about .. well, things .. in reality a good deal of those things had been blown entirely out of proportion.
He continued forward, hooves making soft sounds over the floor of the cave, chasing after those touches. "Well," he said, "you shouldn't take this for granted."

"Trust that I won't, my handsome buck," the strange doe purred.
Hitherto pressed into the shadows at the mouth of the cave, Vexed took this opportunity to slip away, heart beating like a fluttering bird in her chest. Whatever was about to come next, she desperately did not want to bear witness to. Most of that flutter was anxiety - but surely a part was wretched, wretched guilt. Steady, steady, she thought; with this she could soon claim her prize.
Thus did My Trouble learn this day that morality was flexible in the face of sheer desire...but for what it was worth, she fervently prayed the strange, handsome buck enjoyed it anyway.
