The bronze, after pacing back and forth between the candidates, paused. He stood for a moment, as if waiting for some sign. Perhaps he was. Ah, there! There! Not nearly as graceful as he had seemed when pacing the sands, the large bronze clumsily made his way over to Iarodan. He butted the boy with his head, and carefully stood over him. The bronze wanted Iarodan to know who was boss.

I'dan mine! I'dan! I am Luth! I have come to protect you! Are you hurt, mine? Luth's focus seemed to shift, however, and though he did seem genuinely concerned that his rider had somehow been hurt--it mattered more that there was a void in his belly that quickly needed filling. I hunger, mine! Where is my food? Why did you not bring it to me? Did you not expect me?

A small egg, smaller than the rest of the clutch, started to twitch feebly. Another, larger egg, cracked to reveal a small patch of brown hide.

It would have been funny if everything about the moment hadn't felt so intense, so life-changing. The bronze dropped his poise and moved clumsily, but unquestionably toward Iarodan. He butted him, right in the stomach, and Iarodan fell onto his butt, easily unbalanced in an awkward position and with a leg wound.

I'dan mine! I'dan! I am Luth! I have come to protect you! Are you hurt, mine? The voice projected itself into his head, and with it came a warmth that slowly suffused his bones, seeming to lighten him exponentially until, wound or no, he felt that he could walk on water, or fly under his own power. A broad grin that sparkled out through his eyes grew on his face.

No, Luth. I'm not hurt - not anymore. He didn't care about the blood flowing down his leg, he didn't care about the mauled girl down the way, he didn't care about the intense heat that would probably leave a red mark on his rear end. All he cared about was that Luth was beautiful, and he was his.

I hunger, mine! Where is my food? Why did you not bring it to me? Did you not expect me? The voice came again, more plaintive this time, and finally Iarodan could not resist: he burst out in joyous laughter, draping one arm over Luth's strong neck. We can't bring it out onto the sands, silly. It's right out there - let's go.

He went to stand, but found that it was a bit of a struggle; his right leg didn't quite want to work that way. He glanced up at his twin ruefully.

Rolling his eyes, Iaman stuck out his hand and hauled his brother up onto his feet. "Get that seen to, as soon as this boy here is stuffed." Despite his harsh tone, delight showed in his fine features; he was genuinely happy for his brother. He glanced down at the bronze, smiling broadly. "Welcome to the family."

Luth butted - very gently - at I'dan's good leg. Mine - I hunger very much. Please?

"Yes, yes, Luth. We're going." With one last grin for his twin, I'dan led his bronze off the sand, elation in his every limping step.

Iaman watched him go, a look of satisfaction on his face. Yes - Iarodan deserved a bronze. He could be a leader - had been in training to be one, in fact - if he would drop the pranks and the childishness. He nodded to himself, and refocused his attention on the hatching eggs.

There, one was twitching, and another was cracking. It looked like a brown would come out of that one. He shifted, unused to the lack of his brother by his side, and waited to see what would happen next.

Lorend could only watch as the bronze went to one of the boys. That really was expected wasn't it? She was happy for him. The bronze moved out of the way and two more eggs started rocking. The larger one looked to hatch first. Lorend wasn't sure the second, and smaller one would even hatch.

Morbad nodded to the boy as he lead the bronze away. Someone must surely be happy. He heard the eggs cracking and tried to look around people to spot them.

The Hatching seemed to be wizzing by for Kerrit. It seemed whenever he blinked, an Impression occurred. It was still dark, but someone had thought to bring glows at last. At first it had been difficult to see much of anything, other than the blue dragonet's eyes. He sent Tasryn a smile by way of congratulations. He wasn't sure if they were allowed to speak on the Sands. He didn't quite dare, with Amarath so close. One time, Rath had nearly hit him with her tail. He had never been sure if the attack had been intentional or not (he had always heard dragons would never harm humans, except right after they hatched).

He shuddered at the very thought. He definitely did not want to be smushed, accident or not. He had been relieved when the angry blue had passed him by, and pleased when the bronze had chosen Iarodan. A good match, he thought. Iarodan seemed the type to become a leader one day. Maybe he would even become Weyrleader!

~~~
A small green burst from her egg, just behind the brown's egg. She looked through the candidates almost frantically, studying each candidate. She seemed to hope each one of them would be hers, but as soon as she had studied each, she gave a terrible, anguish filled cry, and launched herself between
A blue hatched and started making his way towards the boys.
Mya had been a bit on the late side, lagging behind the others a bit due to a search of missing garments back at the Barracks chaos. First had been her Robe, which thankfully, had been somehow shoved into the center of the mass hanging where they should have been.
Now, she was running to catch up with the others while attempting to toss on her sandals at the same time.
Sharditdharditshardit....OKAY! She made it! Just in time, in fact, as one of the first eggs broke on the warm sands. And looks like he had his way of indecisiveness? As she wedged herself near the middle of the female candidates, she frowned as he swiped around. Not....an effective method.
But he Impressed nonetheless.
~~
(Mi~ne! Sleep time is over! The Sands call!)
"Mmmph.....Nooo....Dun't wanna go shovel coal today...." The lumpy form under the bed covers shifted and pulled the wad of furs over its head. A childish way of attempting to get more sleep.
(MINE!)
The mental and physical bellow from all sides of the weyr caused the Rider to go tumbling out into the cool air with a loud yelp. After a few moments of fighting the covered tangled, he sat upright and glared at the bulky Green waiting impatiently outside.
"Don't need t-t-*Yawn* to wake the entire Weyr, Mirith. Im up....i'm up...." With a groan, he stood and stumbled to the chest that held his clothing while the formentioned stomped a paw.
(You should have awoken sooner. The Eggs hatch and You wanted to watch your friend today, yes?)
"Yeah yeah...." With more stifled yawns, G'vin clamored onto His beloveds' back and away they flew towards the Grounds, plunking down just as the Blue Impressed and a Bronze chose as well.
(See?! We missed some!)
"Not much, love." (Hmph.....)
The smile that broke out on Iaman's face vanished quickly as the newly hatched green gave a pathetic cry and vanished. The hatching continued - a blue hatched, and the brown's egg continued to shift and wobble and crack, but just for a moment, time stopped.
The green's passing could not go unmourned.
He wiped a tear away from his eye, as surreptitiously as he could. It was the way of things, he supposed, but it seemed so... he couldn't find a word for it. The hatching was suddenly dampened for him; the joy he'd felt at his brother's Impression was diminished, and he found himself just a little less hopeful for himself.
He bowed his head for a moment, glancing up at the queen dragon presiding over her children. How did she feel, watching one of them disappear forever, with the barest notice or ceremony? One moment she was there, and the next she was gone - like that.
Biting his lip, Iaman refocused, willing the tragedy out of his mind. Truly, there was nothing to be done about it; it was the way life worked, and she couldn't choose one for hers if hers wasn't there. How sad, though, that someone who could have had a dragon, should now live their life without one, without even knowing what could have been.
Much to her surprise and delight the little egg hatched first. Lorend thought she would Impress, but when she continued to search she started to worry. The green didn't sound happy. All too quickly the newly hatched dragon went between. Lorend sighed and closed her eyes as the dragons keened. How she hoped there wouldn't be a lot of those. The hatching continued with a blue looking among the boys.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Morbad winced at the unhappy sounds of the green. He did his best not to cover his ears at the keening when the little dragon failed to find her rider. That was a shame. He glanced at the blue coming toward the boys. Was this one anything like the last blue?
PostPosted: Thu Oct 06, 2011 2:28 pm

Oh no.....

It was like a chill wind had blown through the Sands at that heart-breaking cry, sending goosebumps down her spine as tears threatened to spill down her cheeks.

"No....nononono....." When the Green vanished, the tears did spill. Silently, but Mya mourned the loss of such a life truely. No dragon deserved that fate. No one had such a sin they deserved being forced to face life by themselves.

After a moment, the young Candidate carefully wiped the water from her face with a sleeve. Although things like this happened, they shouldn't. But life went on....maybe....someday....perhaps? She and Hers would find each other. A comforting thought that brought a pale smile to her face. Unrealistic, but comforting.

He watched as the bronze impressed and looked at the boy with a congratulatory gaze, shifting his feet again he watched as a green broke shell. Well there was his green. The small dragon looked around but this time did not connect with anyone, he reached out a hand just as she went between. It wrenched at his heart, it was never easy to see a dragon go between, someone should have been here for her, but the Weyr could only train so many candidates at a time and none of them were guaranteed impression.

Another blue sprang forth and the hatching continued. Kelstar dug at a piece of sand in his eye and mourned the loss of the small green who had found no safe harbor here. He looked to the blue and hoped it would not fly between too.

The blue seemed in no rush. In fact, he seemed quite the opposite. He yawned widely at the candidates to show his absolute disinterest, and promptly curled up on the warm sands. His eyes were green with contentment, or perhaps amusement. He laid his head down on his forelegs and watched the candidates. He tilted his head slightly, as if to say Why hurry? There's no rush!

Close to Morbad, an egg exploded. It was another green. She ignored him completely, seeming focused on her goal--away from the candidates! She was starved! She had been stuck in that egg for too long, without anything to eat! She nearly trampled over Lorend in her hurry to get to where-ever it was they kept the food (she wasn't sure, but the people watching made it exciting!) She liked people! She wanted to play! First she needed to find something to eat!

Mine! Mine! Sounded a soft voice in Lorend's mind. It was soft--but persistant. It had a trilling, almost purring sound to it. Mine! Lorend mine! I am your Tribleth, and I am very, very hungry! Can you take me to where there is food?

Lorend was surprised that this clutch didn't appear to be in any hurry to hatch. She could not believe that the blue just laid there. Weren't they suppose to be doing something. Ya'know something important, like finding their rider. She snorted at the blue and gave up on him. Fine, just lay there and make His wait.

It was good thing she did. A green burst from her shell near the boys. Lorend barely managed to get out of the way and avoid being run over. Where did that dragonette think she was going?! The girl muttered something about crazed dragons.

Mine! Mine! Lorend looked around. Where was it coming from?

Mine! Lorend mine! I am your Tribleth, and I am very, very hungry! Can you take me to where there is food? She gaped at the green that had nearly bowled her over. That was her dragon? Tribleth. Lorend hurried up.

"This way." A gentle hand guided the green toward the tables. She picked up a bowl of food and had to tighten her grip on it as a green snout tried to push into it. "Hold on Tribleth!" She grabbed a handful and stuffed it into the waiting mouth. A smile crossed her lips, scratch forgotten.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Morbad jumped as pieces of shells rained down upon him. The newly hatched green couldn't have cared if he existed or not. She had headed away from all the candidates without even a first glance at him. He had to watch it. Still, it had a positive side effect. There was a number of fine shell pieces laying around him now. Discretely he used his toes to pull some of the bigger pieces between his feet. There all he had to do now was casually reach down and pick 'em up after the hatching.
The hatching was off to a rather remarkable start but the only thing the lanky tomboy could think about was how she was missing it again. The heat soaking into the base of her sandals, the grit of the sand somehow finding its way against her skin, sweat trickling down the back of her neck. She missed it, she couldn’t help just feel jealousy crawling under her skin, burrowing deeply into her chest and crawling painfully at her heart.
One after another the dragonets were Impressing to theirs, Taslyn to a blue then---
Iarodan.
A bronze, such a lovely handsome bronze! It wasn’t fair--- it was his first time standing and he Impressed faster than a herdbeast learned to seek out its mother’s milk. Snubbing the side of her nose all too roughly Quindrife found herself growling, she was happy for the boy, her friend but the ache that coiled around her insides made the lanky brunette want to lash out and strike the nearest person. She was so sharding angry. It was all T’rel’s fault!
It was all his fau---
The sound that filled her ears brought her steely gray eyes back towards the hatching grounds, a swansong of a little green as she popped between. Quindrife frowned deeply at the sight and forced her emotions to settle, it just wasn’t meant to be--- what if that was hers and it had given up because it couldn’t see her. None of this was fair. Lowering her face into her hands the brutish tomboy sobbed openly into the palms of her hands and brought her knees up so that she could hug them to her chest. She was a weyrbrat, she had every right to stand but fate was making sure that she would never touch the heated sands. It just wasn’t meant to be.
The brown that had been struggling with his egg hatched. He was more awkward than the dragons that had hatched before him. He had a clumsy appearance and seemed to prove that sometimes, one could judge upon appearance. He stumbled out of the shell, creeling pathetically. Where was his? Where was his? He searched first through the boys, slowly, as if trying to make sure he didn't trip over any of them. His wings were too large for his body, they trailed onto the ground. Looking altogether awkward, even if a seasoned dragonrider might have recognized the signs of an excellent flier, this dragonet wasn't nearly as nice to look upon as the bronze had been.
His brown hide shown from glows and the dimly rising sun. Once through studying the boys, he hurried to the girls, and studied each one of them. Where was his?! Why wasn't his here?! He bumped into one of the girls, but didn't seem to notice.
Mine? Mine?! Where are you, mine?! Why are you not here! Come to your Jarith! Your Jarith needs you! Come here, now! He was calling to Quindrife, the candidate who'd been stuck in the stands after insulting the Weyrleader's deceased weyrmate. He didn't care about that. He wanted his.
PostPosted: Thu Oct 06, 2011 4:47 pm
‘Mine? Mine?! Where are you, mine?! Why are you not here! Come to your Jarith! Your Jarith needs you! Come here, now!’ The voice that projected into her head caused Quindrife to jerk her head upward, her brow creased and her pulse threatened to tear her throat open by the shear strength of the thudding. No! She was just hearing things, it wasn’t real, she just wanted to Impress so badly that her mind was playing games on her. ‘Quindrimine, please your Jarith needs you to come here, now!’ The awkward brown cried again, flapping his oversized wings with time with a bit more panic, he knew his was there somewhere he just couldn’t see her.
Even if she was crazy, even if her mind was playing games on her, even if T’rel would send her to a different weyr the muscular brunette didn’t care. Nothing mattered right now except Jarith. Bolting to her feet Quindrife launched herself from the stands and threw her weight over the seat in front of her and began to rush down the stairs.
“He is calling to me! He needs me, move out of my way! He is mine! MOVE!” Desperation masked the anger in her voice, and her feminine natural pitch erupted unguarded from her mouth as she pushed and shoved to get to the base of the steps as quickly as she could, she would not let him go between, she would not allow that! Long legs snapped loudly as the longhaired brunette sprinted across the hot sands, he needed her, her Jarith needed her!
She couldn’t move fast enough for her own sanity, she was convinced he would between before she could reach him, hammering across the sands Quindrife finally reached the creeling dragonet and collapsed to her knees, stormy gray eyes filled with tears and she brought her strong lean arms around his neck and held him, sobbing openly against his gorgeous brown hide.
“Don’t worry Jarith, Yours is here, I won’t ever leave you. I won’t ever let you go. We will show Ista Weyr how important we are!”
Another dragon Impressed. Iaman smiled to see the green bowl hers over in her haste, and then turn back for her, clearly urging her to hurry and get her fed. Tribleth, if he'd heard correctly. It looked like she was going to be a handful.
Then, up there, a blue lay curled in the bits of his shell, apparently content to take his time, or perhaps let his come to him. He tilted his head, wondering if that dragon was for him... but he was content to wait and see.
Finally, a third shell burst open. That brown that had taken his time to hatch spilled out onto the sand, lanky and awkward. Huge wings... Iaman wondered if they would be a help or a hindrance, once he started to fly. He brought to mind the brown flit that Quindrife had Impressed and remained thus far nameless, and Iaman suppressed a girlish giggle, instead clearing his throat in as masculine a manner as he could.
He took his time, studying all the candidates carefully. Iaman started to get nervous; was he going to between as well? He hoped as hard as he could that it wasn't to be so; he didn't know if he could handle two, especially so close together. And then the brown seemed to be looking up into the stands - calling to someone there?
Iaman turned, a broad grin quickly forming on his face as he saw the intense look overtaking Quindrife's. He stepped quickly out of the way as she launched herself down the stands and over the sand toward the brown, throwing her arms about him.
Yes. This was right. His earlier disillusionment evaporated in the face of fate, and Iaman faced the rest of the hatching, renewed.
