Raven began stretching, focusing on breathing and letting her muscles gently move. She hadn’t realized just how tense she had been, letting out an almost relieved sigh as she stretched. Had she ever been in a fight? Slapping, scratching…Finally Raven grinned. “Yeah, I was in a slapping scratching physical fight once, Jett. Freshman year at Meadowview…you don’t remember? You were still at the school at the time. It was over cheerleading tryouts. I beat up the head cheerleader.”

How had she managed to forget that? It was one of her proudest moments. Sure, she got a big ugly bruise on her face due to it, but…she had managed to claw her way to the top, becoming cheerleading captain in her sophomore year of school. So, it had been worth it. She laughed out loud, then took a final stretch, wincing just a bit as her back popped. “All right. I’m ready. Teach me, oh great punching one.” She was really excited to learn to fight. She was quite sure it would help her out someday.

The blonde took the hair tie off of her arm, using it to tie her long hair up, so it wasn’t falling around her shoulders, getting in her way. “Just don’t cry if I kick your a**, okay, Jett?”

Jett seemed absolutely amused by the younger female. “You really think you’ll be able to kick my a**? I know I’m a teacher, but I’m not that good. Don’t think you’ll be a professional over night.”

He followed suit; when he was done stretching, he pulled the hair tie from around his wrist and fastened his hair in a low ponytail at the base of his neck, mindful to secure his bangs behind his ears. If he were back home, he’d have used some barrettes or something to make sure his hair didn’t get in his face, but he doubted this was going to be anything as fierce as his time alone with his punching bag.

“Anyway. We’ll start out simple. Take this stance,” he said; he planted his legs on the ground to give him a sturdy foundation. “Makes it harder to knock you down if you’re in a real fight,” he explained, staying still so she’d have time to analyze and replicate his position. “In my opinion, there are only two things you need to focus on when you’re in a fight. One, don’t get hit. Two, kick the other guy’s a**. Or girl,” he gestured toward her.

He clenched his hands into fists. “Punching. I like punching. It’s fun,” he said; he flashed her a smile heavy with charm and playfulness. “But the key is, don’t throw all your weight into a punch. Always, always remember that. If you throw too hard, it puts you off balance and leaves you open—so while you’re struggling to get your footing back, you’ve got no way to defend yourself and it makes you an easy target. You follow so far?” he asked; this might not have been hammering on something like he’d intended, but there was a certain amount of enthusiasm he hadn’t quite expressed in space until now. He might not be demolishing a canvas bag filled with sand, but just making the gestures—doing something he loved—was more than enough to make him happy.

Raven nodded, trying to mimic his stance and grinning when she managed. “Like this, Jett?”

She curled a hand into a fist then nodded, giving a little chuckle. Don’t put all of her weight into a punch…so…

“So wait, I have to hold back when I’m trying to beat the crap out of someone? How does that work? Wouldn’t that get to be annoying? Isn’t it like going easy on them? What if they deserve a punch with all of my weight behind it?”
Because that could happen one of these days, she was sure. Some people just deserved a good punch in the face…Jett was one of them most days. The stupid a*****e.

Jett glanced at Raven and then shook his head. “Weren’t you listening? Look, I’ll do a demonstration,” he said; he curled his hand into a fist and threw a punch into the air; it didn’t pack much power, though he wasn’t really trying. “All right, you see that? My feet stay on the ground, and if someone moved to attack me, I haven’t left any of my weak points open and I’ve got good grounds to react. Versus if you, say, threw all your power into it.”

This time, Jett punched with massive force—enough to the point where his non-dominant foot lifted just slightly off the ground. He drew his arm back to his side and looked at her. “See? If I threw with all my might and, say, missed, my opponent could have whacked me and knocked me right off balance. You never want to end up on the ground, got it? That’s just embarrassing and shameful. Wait until you know your body better—when you can control your punches—to determine how strong a blow you can deliver before you put yourself at risk. Your posture is good, you’re in the right position,” he added, complimenting her form.

Jett moved and held up his right hand, palm facing towards her, and pointed at it with his left. “I want you to punch, here. Let me see what you’ve got, so far. Don’t worry about hurting me,” he added, not quite sure if she’d really feel that bad if she, say, broke his wrist or something. He doubted she could do any real damage, anyway; she might have been a cheerleader but she neither knew how to punch the way he did, nor did she seem to have so much upper body strength that he was legitimately worried.

Raven nodded, taking in how he seemed to become off balance by putting all of his weight into a punch. She figured he had a good point…but that wasn’t going to stop her from hitting someone as hard as she could if they really deserved to be hit like that. No, she would do what she pleased in that case.

Now, however, she took in a deep breath, and curled her hand into a fist, punching his hand as hard as she could without losing her balance.

Truth be told, it felt good to just punch. It was like a release she didn’t realize she needed. “Huh. Yeah, I think I understand…I felt controlled with that. I really did.”

And she hoped she at least caused his hand to sting a little.

A little grin grew on Jett’s face and he nodded approvingly. “So you do have a little bit of punch in you. Not bad. Pretty good, I didn’t expect that much from you. Though, when we get back home,” he said—with such confidence that it was obvious he had made up his mind that they were getting back, “You might want to hit up a gym. With a punch like that, you might be able to knock out a fourth grader. But, don’t worry.”

He flashed a little grin. “It’s a good start, I’m impressed. And you’ve got the basics down. Now, what else did you want to learn, just how to throw a punch or should I jump into hooks and jabs? …Or are you happy to just keep punching my hand like that?” he asked, voice playful and very akin to a purr.

Raven gave a grin of her own, pleased by the slight praise she had been given. Some praise was better than none at all…even if the some praise had been a little half assed. “Well, I could punch your face instead. Would that be better for you, Jett?”

She was pleased with herself though. Even the knowledge that she shouldn’t put her whole weight into a punch made her understand a little better what the hell she should do if she did manage to get herself attacked again. She had to fight. That was all. She had to suck it up and stop pussyfooting around and kick the crap out of whoever it was that was bothering her.

So maybe she did still punch like a girl. It didn’t matter now, because from this moment on, Raven Moore would be punching. As hard as she could.
