Claire filed the name away for reference later, and stood her ground until the trainee left. With any luck, he'd be a trainee for a long time to come. After she heard the outer training room door click shut, her expression cleared into a rueful smile as she stepped over to Alba. "Stop moving before you hurt yourself, will you? Or hurt yourself more, anyway," she added. "Congrats on the promotion, by the way. When did that finally happen?"

All this said while she did a quick once-over for injuries, a habit she didn't think she'd be breaking anytime soon. Probable black eye, a few bruises, nothing bleeding... He should probably go to the infirmary anyway, just to make sure nothing was broken. Especially ribs - he wouldn't feel it right away if they were broken, anyway, but he sure as hell would feel it later. "You alright?"

Alba gave a grim smile. "A couple aspirin and a steak on the eye, I'll be right as rain," he jokingly answered. He was quiet for a few seconds, letting her check him over, while he just sat there feeling like a tired, limp puddle, how ever the heck that worked. "Recent promotion. Seems my designation for a while was, 'that guy who does the cleaning.' Guess I'm just awesome like that, huh?" He grinned at his own humor.

Claire's diagnosis was pretty much spot on. There was some swelling where he'd been hit in the jaw at the start, his wrist was sore and probably sprained, and his torso, as well as his back, just flat out hurt. There probably was more damage than could be seen there, but for now he could only try to take his mind off it, and focus on the areas that didn't ache as much.

Next to him, there was a quiet, "Ching?" Alba looked down at Spook, who was standing right next to his hip. She stared up at him with big, tearful eyes. The grunt pet her on top of the head again, and the large bell visibly cheered up some at the gesture. Thank goodness she was at least okay.

"How about some ice instead?" She suggested, the same rueful smile present on her face as she knelt down next to him. Zeus hopped off her shoulder. "Not quite as messy, and easier to get." That and she suspected the kitchens didn't stock full steaks to waste on someone's eye. His comment about 'the guy who does the cleaning' made her chuckle though. "I was starting to wonder for a while if they'd forgotten about you or something, with how long you were a trainee. But hey, at least you're pretty much like a cleaning expert now. When you get up to agent, your partner will love you." Unless, of course, cleaning so many toilets had made him swear off cleaning anything again ever after being promoted.

"So... I didn't know you were a cop," she started cautiously, but only because it might be a sensitive topic he may not want to talk or think about. The thought of him being a spy of some sort didn't even cross her mind.

"No steaks for eyes? What is this, modern day or something? Suppose you have a point, though. And Spook may try to take my hand off to get it." Alba made the mistake of starting to chuckle again, but instantly stopped with another grimace. He really needed to stop doing that. "Too bad they don't give out a golden toilet award here. I practically own those janitor closets, at this point."

He turned serious and diverted his eyes when Claire asked about him being a cop. "It's not something someone wants to particularly advertise when in the middle of a major crime organization. Former Officer Taylor Ross, of the Saffron City Police Department, at your service. Emphasis on 'Former.' I'm not exactly welcomed there, these days." Alba turned back to make eye contact, and suddenly gripped her arm. It was a firm hold, but light enough that he wouldn't hurt her. That was the last thing he ever wanted. But he needed her to understand. Needed someone to believe him, "I'm not a spy, Claire. Please..."

"Looks like modern day to me," she said with a light chuckle, though winced slightly when he grimaced. "You'd better go to the infirmary in a few minutes, when you're feeling a bit better. Don't want any broken ribs or anything," because that would be horrible. They couldn't put a cast on those, obviously. So what did they actually do for those? ...was there even anything they could do? There had to be something.

"Taylor Ross?" She repeated, trying to recall if she'd ever heard a last name - or any other name, for that matter - for Alba. "So is Alba or Taylor your first name?" Not that it was any business of hers, but she liked knowing things.

The sudden feeling of a hand on her wrist caught her by surprise, and she looked up with eyebrows raised, expression showing her confusion for a moment or two before she understood. "I believe you, don't worry," she replied in serious yet gentle tones - his sudden distress was painfully obvious, and she couldn't help but feel a sudden pang of... something. Kinship, perhaps? Something like that. Not that she could tell him, though. "Don't worry," she repeated, a smile forming on her face. "Really, don't worry about it, Alba. Have you told the higher-ups? If that information is in your file, then you're perfectly fine." She knew that from personal experience, though it made her feel a bit guilty that she couldn't tell him. After hesitating a moment, she continued, "and that's actually pretty tame compared to the previous occupations of some of the people here, if you think about it. Everybody has secrets or things they want to hide." Pause. "Everyone does."

Alba nodded, relieved. He could have almost cried at it all. Almost. "Alba Taylor Ross, yeah. So it's Alba. T. Ross. My parents thought they were being creative." Letting go of her arm, he sniffed and rubbed at his face with both hands. The upper half of his face was temporarily hidden from view when his palms stopped on his forehead. It wouldn't do anyone any good if he started to panic now.

"It's in my file. I didn't see any point in trying to hide it when I signed on, considering all the news coverage when I was fired. It was years ago, but... even going by my first name now, or just growing out my hair, it wouldn't have taken long for them to start asking questions." He dropped his hands, leaned back completely against the lockers, and stared at the ceiling for a moment. "Thanks," he said, looking back at Claire, and finally smiling a little again. "Thank you." He didn't ask Claire what her secrets were. He wasn't going to pry if she didn't want to talk, but he still appreciated everything she had said.

Arceus, he was feeling old again... And... well... in pain. That probably didn't help matters.

Alba T. Ross. Seriously? She couldn't help but chuckle a bit at that, but shook her head as she sat down next to him. "Sometimes I wish my parents hadn't been so creative," she admitted with a rueful smile, wrinkling her nose a bit and forgetting temporarily that the name she was speaking about wasn't the one Alba was familiar with. "It was funny growing up because a lot of people - kids especially - had a tough time with my name."

The sniffling didn't go unnoticed, but Claire hesitated - he looked like he could use a hug, and she would've definitely offered one, except.. Well, the poor guy just had the crap beaten out of him. She didn't want to hurt him more by accident because she'd been too enthusiastic about hugs, so instead she reached up to gently rest her hand on his shoulder. "Then don't worry about it," she said softly, a small smile forming on her lips. "You're welcome."

After a moment her hand slipped down and her smile twitched into something a little less than a grin, and her fingers stretched up to play with the ends of her hair. "I understand though, really. And no, sometimes that isn't enough. Just growing it out, you might also need... to dye it. Or change your name," she suggested with a bright smile, then turned to meet his eyes with her vivid purple ones. "Colored contacts seem to be effective too." That said, she chuckled and pushed herself back to her feet and offered Alba her hand. "C'mon, we should get you to the infirmary for a more official diagnosis and make sure nothing's broken."

He looked at her, and this time, he tried to really look. Those weren't simply random disguise suggestions, were they? "We all have our demons eventually, I suppose," he quietly responded, then gave a breathy chuckle as well when she stood. "True. True. I'd kind of like to have use of two eyes at one time again soon."

Trying not to make too many faces, he accepted her help. Between that and a hand against the lockers (Spook tried to "help" as well, but Alba had to wave her off when tugging on the back of his collar caused him to make even more exaggerated faces), he finally managed to get to his feet and stop for breath. "Please tell me... the infirmary... isn't twenty miles away."

If Alba looked closely enough, he'd be able to see the faint, subtle circles surrounding her irises - contact lenses. "I think we do," she agreed with a smile, trying not to think about hers. They came back to haunt her frequently enough on their own, she didn't need to help them by thinking about them even more. Mention of using both eyes made her think immediately of Lucas. "Yeah, being able to use both would be nice."

"I don't think it's that far," she said after a pause and a small chuckle once he'd stood. "Just two floors up, and we can take the elevator." She hesitated a bit, unsure if she should put an arm around him to help him - she didn't know where he was hurt and didn't want to make it worse, so she settled for offering him her arm instead. "Can you walk okay? Because I can't carry you."

"Sounds like a plan. I think I can manage walking to that point, at least." Between Claire's offered help, and his using the lockers for support, Alba managed to climb back to his feet. Thank the gods for the lingering adrenaline. By the time they would arrive at the infirmary, he would be leaning a little more heavily against the agent, but he did indeed manage to grit his teeth and stay walking until then.

As they left, Spook bounced down to the floor to retrieve a pair of glasses. Her human's vision would be blurry without them, and so she carefully folded them as she had seen done every night. With that accomplished, she took the air again, and floated faithfully after the humans.
