Calder wasn't hiding, but hiding and watching. WHAT?! It wasn't creepy! He at least deserved enough to watch at least after all he did, and he was just sitting here. So what if he was peeking through the bushes and turning his ear just so to hear better. As long as he was quiet and hidden, he could do as he pleased. There was just too much to see that it was hard to resist. Sure, he read about true love a million times over in his books, but he never got to watch it live. Not in this way, and he took personal pride in helping it along.

Resting his head against a tree, he peeked through the foliage and watched, only to want to scream WHAT THE JACK! at Riley. All that work. All the presentation. All that and she had come, seen this gorgeous setup, and all she could do was hug the undead? No wonder their relationship was going this slow! Couldn't she have done more than just hugged him? Nuzzle him a little better or - well, he didn't know how that all worked between them but this didn't feel all that romantic considering they seemed to be close like this all the time. This was supposed to be a push forward in their relationship. Not friendship hug time!

Still, from what he was hearing, it was at least going well, Better than that. The collective conversation was making him clamp his hands about his mouth to resist the urge to just go AWW! Such a personal moment was rather embarrassing to watch, but despite knowing he should be looking away and probably ignoring every little noise he heard from them until the date was over, he just couldn't!

A healthy and meaningful relationship. She repeated, as if tasting the words in her mind. I don't think you have any issue with the latter. The former, however.. she looked as though she would be grinning, if she had a mouth.

Okay, Malodore. She acquiesced, holding her hand out. Woo me.

Malodore put the spare coat down over one of the chairs, trying to remember the appropriate sequence for a 'date'. Greeting, check. Appropriate romantic gestures, check. Travel to date location, check. Gift of appropriately romantic dead flora, check. What came next? Was it the food or the squirrel or... well the squirrel was technically also food but...

No, it was the normal food. Right? Surely. "Ah, let us consume appropriately aphrodaisiacal cuisine," it offered, then promptly doubted if 'aphrodaisiacal' was a real word. Ah well. It pulled out the chair and gestured for Riley to take a seat.

Riley had mixed feelings about the word aphrodisiac being used by Mal, and she wondered to herself if it understood just what the context of the word entailed. Or, rather, if it meant the phrase in a different way than she might have been thinking. Ever single that conversation in her living room, Riley had been.. confused. Perhaps a little lost. And other things she refused to admit to herself, as well.

But for now, she moved to take her seat, and looked up at her date fondly.

Then it hit her.

Huh. She looked around, one final time, and confirmed it. We're on a date. This should have been obvious from the beginning, except for one glaring factor. I've, ah.. I've never been on a date before. It felt strange to admit it.

"Ah! Si, yes, we are! Naturally!" Malodore's eyes widened in vague panic; it had thought she knew! Had it not made the appropriate signals to indicate that this undertaking was, in fact, of a date-like nature? "This is acceptable, is it not? I did not intend to bring you here under false pretenses..."

So. Romantic.

For two of the smartest creatures in school - these two were a bunch of idiots. Calder couldn't keep from pressing a hand to his face and shaking it in silent disbelief. Each time he looked up or caught another ridiculous word from Malodore, Calder wanted to go over and shake the pair and tell them that THIS was not romantic. Well, not normally. All their flustering in a way was rather adorable, but they were too jumpy and needed to relax. He should have hired a band or brought his bagpipes, but he was trying to be behind the scenes as much as he could. Jack! He wouldn't even be here if he wasn't worried these two would wind up lost in the woods or sending their relationship racing off a cliff tonight. He did not want to be the one that helped create a date that ruined a relationship.

Though he knew a certain friend of his who might be happy for it.

Shaking that thought off, he continued to watch.

Riley watched Malodore as it flustered, and almost stood back up to try and calm it down. Of course this is acceptable. Malodore, you speak as though I have some sort of pre-requisites on the matter. How easily you forget that I have exactly as much experience on dating as you do.

She reached out, and slipped her fingers through its claws, trying to pull it down to sit with her. Come. You said you wanted to try new things - well, you have found the newest of things. For both of us. You must not worry about the details, when we are blank slates preparing to write our own rules.

"Ah, bene, mia cara," Malodore said with a massive sense of relief. It sank into the chair happily. "Now, ah, to start we have..."

...

It got up again and hurried over to where Calder had told it the brains would be. Sure enough, the platter was there as promised, as was the squirrel - but first things first! "Here you are," it said, grandly, swishing the delicious candied brains onto the table. Its training with Desu-chan and Rage had been excellent practice for this!

Riley was relieved when Malodore sat down, only for the relief to flutter away as it jumped back up again. Of course, it had every reason to do so, and when it put the candied brains in front of her, her expression flickered. Her eyes widened, and her brow furrowed in surprise.

Several small, actual sounds came from her. One sounded like a questioning whimper, others just sounded like little whines of desire. She tore her eyes away and looked up at Malodore, clearly flustered with the offering.

You. Ah. You're giving me these.. on purpose? The guilt from her previous escapades with sugar played openly on her face. She wanted to dive in.. but.. Malodore.. Malodore didn't like when she ate sugar.

Conflicting.

"You like them," Malodore said, almost shyly. "And besides, if you begin rampaging all that will see are squirrels and other gentle woodland creatures. It will be very easy to remove the witnesses."

Sometimes it was so hard to tell if Malodore was kidding or not...

Whether or not Malodore was kidding, that was a decidedly sexy thing to say. Curses, she was smitten. She sagged in relief, all of her tentacles coming to life and rising up as one, to attack the brains.

Before she dove in, however, she gave the plague doctor one last questioning look.

Are you going to eat with me? Dates were supposed to be about, being together and things like that, weren't they.. and perhaps not about attacking food with horrific passion.

"Of course. I enjoy a good brain as much as the next undead, though perhaps not so obsessively as some zombie varietals." It picked up a delicious segment between two claws and nibbled at it delicately, savoring the flavors. These were high-quality brains, excellently prepared.

... Ah! Yes! It was meant to do something else here, was it not? It quickly put down its own bit of brains, picked up another segment, and held it out to her. "I am given to understand that feeding one's partner is highly romantic."

All of Riley's tentacles dropped like stones at the phrasing of this particular nugget of information, and Riley turned so dark, her face looked black in the dim light. Malodore was really trying to be romantic with her. Just.. all out romantic. No experiments, no cute reasoning, it was just.. just trying for the sake of being romantic.

Ah. The. Feeding. Yes. Okay. I suppose. Yes.

Eloquent.

One of Riley's tentacles slid across the table timidly, resting beside Malodore's arm, before the tip lifted and opened like a tiny baby bird's mouth awaiting its food for the day.

Malodore picked up an appropriately sized bit of brain between two claws - not too much! choking was not romantic! it was pretty sure! - and offered it to the tentacle. As if it was holding out a bit of fly to its dionaea, really.

... Which probably also wasn't romantic, but Riley hopefully wouldn't catch the similarity. "There you are," it said, jovially.

The tentacle reached up, latched onto the piece of brain, and pulled it in. Then it slid up around it's claws, wrapping around Malodore's hand. It tugged, pulling it closer, and Riley's own hand soon replaced it once it was close enough.

So what inspired this sudden desire? She murmured gently. I am so very curious. Not complaining, mind. Her hand squeezed its claws fondly. Just curious.

Her tentacle was still laying on the table, looking up expectantly.
