Knowing he was off to a bad start and coming into this with the expectation that he would not be very good in the race, Vyoga was extremely put off by his fumbling start and he couldn't seem to find his feet and really get moving. Trying to think about it now, he wasn't really sure how many others were in this race but it seemed like all of them were past him now.
Somehow, he managed not to actually trip over his feet- but it was slow going.

The race had started out well enough in Mwezi's favor. She wasn't typically the sort who spent a whole lot of time running on dry land, but apparently paddling through the murky swamp water had done only good things for her young muscles! Short, powerful legs sending her loping forward full tilt along the track without any consideration for her fellow competitors.
Or much of anything else for that matter. Too bad swimming hadn't taught her to keep an eye on the landscape. A glazed and over excited stare focused perhaps just a little too tightly upon the goal of finishing. So much so that she barely noticed the root that had sprung up like a snare to trap her hind paw.
Landing hard on her chest, Mwezi gasped as the wind was knocked out of her lungs. Damnit! What the hell was that?!
Grunting under her breath a quick glance backwards caused Mwezi to groan at the root, shaking her foot free and quickly gathering herself to continue running. Whatever advantage she'd seemed to have had seemed long gone now. But I'm in this for the long haul..
And so she'd keep at it until she reached the finish line no matter if she came in first or last.

Aha! So he was off to a good start. At least that was something.
But perhaps that was just the thrill putting himself along. After the first good stretch, it seemed as if Zambarau was doing rather well, all considering. It was then, with the slightest naive feeling of overconfidence that Barau let his pride get the better of him. Letting his guard down to the unfamiliar lands, it wasn't long until the lion fell to the mud.
Well. Lesson learned.

Koda was behind most of the pack, but he figured that a steady pace in the beginning would give him an edge. He turned his head to see his mom who seemed to be running as fast as she could, but was still falling behind. That was strange, maybe she was trying to take him off his guard. No way he would fall for that!

"GRRR This race was a stupid idea!" Keili couldn't help but whine; the lioness was panting wildly already and it had just started. This made no sense, how could she be so far behind? Even Koda was edging ahead of her. This was embarrassing to say the least!
Keili was getting more frustrated by the moment, but there was no way she was going to give up so easily. She concentrated with all her might to quicken her pace, but with no avail. Her only hope would be for the others to slip up.

Kamili had not gotten the best start; he blamed the lions around him crowding him for that. Kamili rarely accepted personal fault for anything bad that happened to him. But regardless of where the blame truly lay, he was determined not to fall too far behind the others. He gathered his strength, rushing to catch up with the forerunners or at least keep pace with them. His plan was not to get ahead just yet, but to stay close and break away nearer the finish. He just hoped that nothing else would slow him down...

Talla wasn't expecting to win the race by any means so when many took off ahead of her she offered a slight smile and kept running any ways this was all for fun, and Talla needed to get out more any how. The dark lioness watched those around her, no one seemed to be judging her for being out and having fun, perhaps things really were going to be okay. She tried to push forward and run hard.
Slowly she found herself actually gaining and moving towards the front of the pack... 'what fun' she thought to herself.

A small laughter of excitement escaped Drury's lips as he took off running, the young lion took off bonding to the front of the pack with a few others. He was excited to feel the wind rush through his bright mane as he ran as hard and as fast as he could. He was sure his mother would be very proud of him if she were to see him right now.
There was one thing he had to focus on though... and that was not running into any trees.... the swamp was full of them and as a native he should know how to avoid them but... well things always happened.

Sheshe was in the lead- there was nobody anywhere near her-- until suddenly someone was right at her side, keeping up with her. Grinning, she decided it was time to pick up the pace again. She didn't want to lose her head start just because she was curious about her competitors. She was too competitive for that.

Vyoga felt certain he was in last place, though a quick glance around him told him he wasn't and that he wasn't even alone at the back of the group. It was a comforting thought but he didn't want to be anywhere near where he was. He picked up the pace, making it a couple steps before sliding in the slippery swamp path he followed.
If he wanted to stay on his feet, he had to go more carefully- but he didn't like it.

The fall had been a hard one and several others that hadn't gotten quite a quick a start as Mwezi were suddenly caught up and now passing her. After rising to her feet, regaining her breath and collecting herself to continue the race whatever lead she might have had could have easily been kissed goodbye and it was going to be a hard time catching up and gaining the advantage again, but like hell if she wasn't going to try.
Stretching short but powerful legs into a long but punchy gallop the outsider became a ghostly streak against the haunted surroundings of the swamplands.

Sheshe kept moving, weaving around trees and rocks when necessary- only slipping a couple times, which she was very proud of- and for the most part ignoring those around her as she took and attempted to maintain her spot in the lead of the race.

Vyoga saw an opening for him to get farther ahead in the race and scrambled to take it. In a completely expected twist, he slipped in the mud and ended up on the ground. At first he was too stunned that it could happen to him in everything he tried to do, but he eventually recovered and pushed himself back up to his feet, grumbling to himself as he did.
He definitely wasn't going any faster.

At first, everyone seemed so far ahead, but as Mwezi continued along her journey, passing some of the slower lions in the swamplands along her way, she realized that most had only gained an advantage over her due to her collapse. The extra time had certainly aided them in gaining some ground, but with her motor on full throttle Mwezi was quick to catch up and pass those that had over taken her earlier.
That being said there were still a few legitimately quick competitors who were posing a problem. Their speed and advantage of time and better favor helped them to keep more than a few tail lengths ahead. Hopefully in the next few strides she'd be able to catch up and maybe.. if luck kept with her, surpass those that had taken advantage of their speedy, unhindered start at the beginning of the race.

Tala shook her head she was amazed at how well she was doing but she knew she couldn't let it get to her yet she had to keep running. She wondered as she ran if she really wanted to be the winner. It would again draw attention to her and with her past she really would be happy staying out of the lime light. That being said it would also be nice to be in the lime light for something good instead for once.
She took the chance of looking around herself quickly there was a good number of lions running and she did feel like she belonged. It had been a good idea to race she decided.
