The lioness managed to not snort in derision at Unyezi's statement of her making a good priest. She supposed he did have a point about working on change from within.

She did choke with laughter as he pointed out that she shouldn't even consider becoming Shaman, but abruptly had a coughing fit as he suggested two of the other open positions.

"Why in the hells would you think that?" she exclaimed.

Finally, Unyezi was smiling again at the reaction he got from Caritas about his suggestions. He wasn't expecting her to agree with him immediately, perhaps not even once he explained.. but maybe after she thought about it.

"While midwives are responsible for the honest record of births and their classes, they attend every birth and offer a blessing to the cubs," he explained, "Regardless of the class of the cubs or their parents."

Unyezi allowed for a short pause before continuing.

"And as a historian, you would learn more about how the pride has existed in the past, giving you more knowledge and authority for speculating on the pride's future."

Caritas studied her grandfather. She wondered why it was that he was so insistent that she apply for some kind of position, but had a feeling that it was a question she'd be better off not asking.

She had to admit, the positions he was suggesting were more appealing than Shaman, but she just wasn't sure it was for her.

"I don't know," the black lioness replied. "Sounds like a lot of work." After all, she did have a reputation to maintain.

"Far less work than you're doing now, in the long run," he said, "After you finish training, whether that is proper ceremony for births or learning the history of the pride in more depth, you basically get to sit around and observe those around you until you are called upon. A historian's main job is to keep track of what goes on around the pride and all the big events will be obvious. A midwife is only called upon for births, and there are rarely more than two or three born around the same time."

Really, priests had pretty laid back lives.

She hadn't thought of it in those terms. And really, Unyezi had a way of putting things that made it all much more attractive than Orion had.

Caritas had thought that she was resigned to the way the pride was and how it would always be, but possibilities were opening up before her. She...could make a difference. Make the pride a better place, the place their ancestors had envisioned.

"I'll have to think about it Grandpa," she told the older lion, her voice thoughtful. He really did know how to appeal to her good side.

"As a part of the high class, you have a right to luxury," he said, "And part of that is having the luxury to have and voice your own opinions. And you owe that to your pride and yourself."

Unyezi didn't particularly think it was a good idea to imply there was something other than her own free will behind contributing to the pride but when you cared about your home and had thoughts on how it could improve.. there really was a sense of duty there.

"I hope you do think about it," he added with a smile.

Caritas shook her head at her grandfather, not trusting her voice. The black lioness nuzzled the older lion affectionately.

"Grandpa, you always know just what to say," she told him.

With that, the lioness headed home to sleep, eat and think. Not necessarily in that order.

Smiling, he nuzzled her back and watched her go, silent now. He was pleased with how that had gone, even despite the worrying middle part to their conversation. It didn't seem they were overheard, and he hoped they weren't. It wouldn't help her application to become a priest but it otherwise might not have much impact on her life. But it would definitely not reflect well on him, whatever side he took in their conversation.

Now that he had plenty on his mind, he decided it was time to head back for home. He looked off toward the waterhole but turned about and walked slowly back to the den.

Fin!
