Though Xiu was terrified herself, the knowledge that this was just a nightmare managed to quell some of this fear. Roch, on the other hand, was clearly genuinely afraid, and who could blame him? The Baku was starting to feel a little sick at the growing idea that this scene could have really happened. Could children really be this...misguided?
The ghoul let out a little whimper of her own when Roch fell back into the water. Distracted by her thoughts, she hadn't noticed the reaper's attempt to climb up. Then again, she wasn't sure if he could even sense her presence right now, so it would have been futile of her to try to stop him anyways.
Despite this fact, Xiu couldn't help but crouch down by him, her expression sympathetic as she gave him a light squeeze on the shoulder. "It'll be okay, Roch." Even if he couldn't feel or hear her, it made the Baku feel a little better to at least try being some kind of moral support.

He stared at the wall, deaf to her comfort, blind to everything around them. Slowly, stubbornly, he shoved himself to his feet, careful not to put any more weight on his arm than he had to. Then he reached up, grabbing onto the stone, his fingers gripping it as hard as he could.
One leg came up, stepping on one of the lower rocks and he pulled himself upwards-- The slime made his foot slip and he hung for a second before his hand gave out.
He fell down again, grunting. For a moment he couldn't breathe, he was gasping and panting. Then he tried to force himself to calm down.
It didn't work.

Again, Xiu was reminded of just why she needed to improve her dream-diving abilities. Shun, Mitsu, Moure, Roch...there had been a variety of people whose dreams she had delved into, only to find that she was helpless when they needed assistance. She was a little surprised at herself--Xiu would have thought that, after going through all these dark dreams, she would have given up dream-diving altogether. The only thing that was of some comfort to her in those dreams was that she was--at the very least--able to communicate with and support the dreamer.
It was clearly different in this case, though.
Clutching her hands to her chest, the Baku stood by Roch anxiously, pressing her lips into a thin line as she watched the reaper try and fail to climb out of the well. There was nothing she could do but stand and wait.

Little Roch leaned back against the hard pokey rocks on the inside of the well, letting his eyes close for a moment. A single tear trickled down his cheek, which he reached up angrily to wipe away. His breathing was harsh, but the silence was overwhelming right now.
The trickle of water dripping into the water at his feet seemed extremely loud right now. Drip. Drip. Drip.
He sniffled, hugging his arms around himself. Then abruptly his jaw came up, his eyes opening again. The air around him seemed to get heavier, his FEAR building--
Then it disappeared.
Another tear trailed over his cheeks. "I don't... I don't wanna die," the little boy whispered.

Poor thing. This scene, like many others, was heartbreaking for the Baku to witness. It was only made worse by the fact she couldn't do anything but stand by and watch. Even if she were to somehow climb to the top of the well, she wouldn't be able to move the covering--not on her own, at least. Since this was Roch's dream, he would have to believe that she was capable of doing so before Xiu would be able to shift it.
Of course, the fact that he couldn't see her posed as a problem for that as well.
"...You're not going to die, okay? You're going to be fine, Roch!"

He stopped, his shoulders squaring, his jaw jutting out stubbornly. "I'm NOT going to die!" he told himself, his hands fisting at his sides. "I'm NOT GOING TO DIE YOU STUPID GHOSTS!!" he bellowed. The FEAR began to build again, twisting and turning and rising up around the little boy at an astonishing rate for someone that young.
The FEAR throbbed around his fist, gathering, solidifying, forming into a smaller version of the guitar that she had seen many times before. "I'm NOT going to die," Roch snarled, slamming the body of the guitar into the rocky wall. Sparks flew, metal hitting rock, gouging through it--
"I can change it," Roch's older voice growled, almost from all around them.
The scene went blank, but the wetness at their feet disappeared, replaced by solid ground. Wind came from all around, more powerful than expected, and slowly the scene became lit again. Somewhat.
"Well... Jack," Roch said, turning to look all around him. He saw Xiu now. But before he could say anything he saw the ghosts that surrounded them, rising into the air. They were on a rooftop, he wasn't sure what rooftop it was, but he had a feeling he sort of knew where they were.
He was having a dream about the future. His mind was filling in blanks with shadows, such as what building they were on, but when he looked down he could see quite clearly what he was wearing.
It looked a lot like what his old man wore. A long black trenchcoat, a black shirt, black pants, and black shoes. His guitar was the only color on him, and it seemed to be glowing.
He didn't realize it, but the face Xiu saw as he turned back to her was almost an exact mirror of his old man's.

Shocked? Scared? Amazed? Xiu probably felt all of these things and more as she watched the younger Roch make an incredible effort to break out of the well. There were sparks, the sound of the guitar striking the stone walls of the well, and then--
--...! Xiu's eyes widened in shock as she was suddenly thrown into a different scene. They were no longer in the damp darkness of the well, but...outside? They were outside? And from the corner of her eye, the ghoul could make out someone standing beside her. She turned to face him, and almost immediately, her brows drew together in confusion.
"...Aus--...no?" No. He wasn't Austin, was he? He looked extremely similar, but there were some features that differed slightly from Roch's father. But then, who could this be? The answer came to her when he turned back to look at her again.
Ah. He was looking at her. He could see her, which meant that, in this world, he was the dreamer. He was...
"...R...och...?"

"Xiu," he said quietly. "I'm sorry. You probably saw that too, huh?" he asked, a bit frustrated. "I didn't--I'm still not in complete control," he admitted. "I'm probably going to forget I'm dreaming soon."
There were more ghosts around them, which he looked around, paling slightly as he saw them. "No," he growled, his hands going to his guitar again. The song he started playing was like nothing he'd ever played before. It was sweet, yet haunting, and seemed to be forgotten as soon as the notes reached the air.
The ghosts started to fade, twisting and heading upwards. It probably wasn't how reaping really was, but it's how his mind thought it should be. Yet, even though the song sounded so beautiful, his face was pale and taunt. His fear and hatred shined in his narrowed silver eyes.
"I have to break this habit," he whispered.

So he could see her now. Why couldn't he before, she wondered? Whatever the case, she offered him a weak smile as she shook her head. "N...no, don't apologize. There's no reason for you to." It kind of sounded like what she had just witnessed was...a reoccurring nightmare, perhaps? She had been in the dreams of those who had reoccurring nightmares, and it was never easy to watch. Considering what she had learned about Roch before--that he was, at the very least, a semi-lucid dreamer--she was a little surprised to find that he hadn't been able to control that particular aspect.
Then again, the boy boil had looked pretty beat up. Xiu frowned, wondering if whatever happened to him had spawned him to have that nightmare this evening.
Whatever, the case, it seemed like it was over now? At least, Roch had successfully broken out of the well, and she watched silently as he went through with his own personal take on how spirit reaping worked. Considering that she wasn't a reaper herself, the Baku wasn't sure if this was how reaping worked either, but...it was kind of eerily beautiful, watching and listening as the melody caused the ghosts to float up and disappear.
Her gaze flickered away from the scene and back to the figure of the older Roch. "...Habit?" She repeated, frowning slightly. She only noticed the expression in his eyes now.

He looked at her again, letting the last strains of the song linger in the air before the ghosts around them seemed to disperse. There was something strange about that look, a hint of confusion. "Xiu?" he asked again. "Nah, you look too young... are you her little sister or something?" he asked, heading over to the little ghoul.
"You can't be her daughter! I ain't old enough to have a kid your age, which means she isn't either! Wait--" He frowned, mentally counting. "Maybe if she was still in her teens--but I woulda heard about that!" he said, shaking his head. He gave her a grin, one that somehow looked sharper, more dangerous than his teenage grins.
"Man you're a beauty," he said teasingly. "But how'd you get in the human world? You need to get back!"

...Ah! Right! Despite the fact Roch looked older in this dream, she still looked the same, didn't she? The Baku fumbled to come up with an excuse, but fortunately (...unfortunately?) the older reaper began to jump to his own conclusions. The one about Xiu being her own daughter made her stare blankly, though she supposed that in this dream world, the fact that she was still in her teens didn't make any sense to Roch.
Something about his grin made her a little uneasy, and she had to remind her that this was Roch, and that it was all just a dream. As if to emphasis the former point, the Baku puffed out her cheeks at the sudden teasing comment, choosing not to reply. Not verbally, at least--her pouty face was enough of a response.
Her expression changed to a curious one as she glanced around, taking in their surroundings. "Human world?" Was this what Roch thought the human world looked like? Considering how little she knew about such things, the Baku was sure how accurate or inaccurate the setting was. Turning her gaze back to Roch, she widened her eyes. "Back where?"

"Back to Halloween," Roch said, walking over to her and dropping a hand on the small of her back. "This way, screech," he said gallantly, waving a hand to indicate a door that seemed to have just appeared. He reached up, turning the knob and gently pushing her forward.
The world went black for a second, then they were standing in an alley. There was noise, far more noise than one would expect. It was the sound of people cheering and music blaring. There were tattered papers fluttering around, and on the wall there was a worn looking poster.
Riley's face looked back at them. The words "All Hail The Pumpkin King" were scrawled across the bottom of the poster in gold. Roch looked at it with a hint of amusement, then shook his head. "Looks like it's Riley Gras time again."

There didn't seem to be any other place to go aside from through the door, so the Baku docilely allowed herself to be pushed through. The suddenly warping from one place to another was a little disorienting but, really? She should have been used to it by now--
--...what was that.
...Was that Riley's face?
...What in Halloween was Riley Gras?
The Baku gaped in shock at the poster, looking from the photo of the mindflayer, to the words printed across the bottom of the page, and then back. The Pumpkin King? Riley was the Pumpkin King? ...Actually, no. For some reason, that actually wasn't all that surprising to Xiu. The mindflayer definitely had a good head on her shoulders, so the idea that she had taken over Halloween was (hopefully) not too terrifying of an idea.
It took the Baku a moment to recall that this was just a dream. "...Y-yes, Riley Gras. So it is."

"You ever been to Riley Gras?" Roch asked, grinning. "This is one awesome party! But if you're related to Xiu she probably wouldn't let you come until you were older," he admitted, heading out of the alley and into the street. There were masses of people on the sidewalks, but it was the large, colorful vehicles going down that street that were getting all the attention.
"There she is!" he said, pointing to the largest of the floats. There was a band on the front part, but there was a stand above them, empty. "Jack I love that woman," he said, grinning widely. "Come on! My float awaits!" he said, reaching for her hand to tug her to the massive musical float. He was greeted with cheers and offered a ladder to get on with.
"Back when we were in Amity she gave me a little wooden platform and a massive chair," Roch told Xiu as he offered to help her up. "Now she gives me my own jackin' FLOAT! Oh, and the massive amphitheater downtown," he added casually. "I rent it out most of the time, though. Hey, maybe I'll give you a concert, you and the rest of the family. If I can talk Xiu into it, that is. And her hubby." He had a bland expression on his face when he said that last part.

Xiu--eh? ...Could there be an older version of herself in this dream? She supposed that it wouldn't be all that surprising--if this was set in the future, then it was only logical that everyone would have grown up in Roch's mind as well. Hmm, she wondered what she was like?
Whatever the case, it didn't look like Roch had changed that much. The Baku couldn't help but smile when a large float came into view. Something about that--the crowd cheering for him and the fact that the float was the biggest of them all--was very Roch-like. Following after him, she accepted his assistance with getting onto the float, smiling at the offer of a concert. To think that this dream started out completely diff--
