Callum did not have his companion’s exuberance for running away, nor her trendy sport shoes (Callums shoes were boring black loafers). From spending the last few years of life sitting at a desk instead of playing sports and being active, the blonde was decently out of shape.
He huffed and grunted as he ran, but Callum wasn’t sure how much more he could go. Instead of trying to play hopscotch over the road’s holes, Callum stopped and stooped to his knees at the pile of rubble. If it couldn’t stand to run anymore, he might as well look through the pile for something helpful.

With the holey expanse stretching before her, Keren was faced with a pretty urgent choice. Agility training? Easy peasy lemon squeezy, but her companion was lagging behind and Keren didn't fancy getting stuck out here all by herself.
"What are you doing?" she asked Callum urgently, sliding into home beside him and the strange pile of rubble. She highly doubted that digging was going to help them much, but there wasn't much else to do - she was already here, after all.

The monster will pretty much be on your a** any second now, but go ahead and roll a d8 to see what you won!
1: A couple of grimy, seemingly alien, coins. Pity this isn't the Antiques Roadshow. 2: A small rock! 3: A slightly bigger, pointier rock! 4: A whip -- or a length of something-or-other that can be used as one. 5: A squeaky toy... what?? 6: Two rocks! 7: A rusty harpoon. If there's space whales, then maybe there's space whalers? 8: A small pile of bones. Human bones.
Once you've pulled out your item, you can either attempt to wield it immediately or try to make it across all the potholes first.

“Looking for something useful! What does it look like? “ Callum wheezed part way through his sentence. Really, if he ever got back to Earth, he had to get to the gym. Hopefully he could find something good in the pile, anything would do. What Callum pulled out was a lengthy piece of fiber, it sort of looked like a whip but it reeked of seaweed and kelp.
Callum stood up, and tried to wield his newfound weapon. “Keep running! I’ll try and hold this… thing off.” Last space attack he was helpless to help Layton, but maybe now he could attempt to help this girl. He certainly wasn’t up for running. It was better to arm himself now instead of fumbling across the road dragging his kelp whip. Callum gulped before flicking his wrist and the kelp whip.

Keren pulled a small rock from the pile, and scowled at Callum's newfound whip. Leave it to him to pull something usefull, whereas she pulled a pebble. It wasn't even an interesting rock! "******** this," she said, pushing herself to her feet. She pocketed the rock for later use (or just proof of all the bullshit she'd been through this week - who knew, at that point), turned tail, and started back down the road.
Keren Della-Blue was going to try and Cross ALL THE POTHOLES.

Callum was indeed brave to stay front-and-center in front of the approaching monstrosity. The clattering noise of its limbs against the road before it only grew more and more intense with each passing second, until it began to cause tangible vibrations between his feet. While Keren successfully scrambled to relative safety, the makeshift whip shot out and -- miraculously -- wrapped itself around the creature's pinky finger!
It produced an audible hiss from wherever its mouth was as the force of being snared shook it off balance. As it continued to run, it teetered in failed attempts to right itself until clambering noisily into the smattering of potholes. One of its limbs had momentarily knocked Callum over, its claw leaving a tear in his shirt and a sizable (but not at all fatal) gash across his chest.
The monster struggled from where it had stopped. Some of its fingers had gotten stuck in the potholes, and as it squirmed the two travelers could make out a glowing blue pustule on the underside of its body.
It seemed like it wouldn't be able to escape its improptu trap for a while, though, so Callum and Keren would probably be able to leave it behind without it chasing them again anytime soon. Then again there was the risk of someone else running into it and not getting quite so lucky, so they could also try and finish it off somehow.

“Woooooooo!” Callum watched the whip wrap around the demon-hand’s pink finger and subsequently get trapped in the rainbow road’s potholes. The lucky b*****d was successful in his endeavor, sort of. His free hand fist-pumped the air then extended out to point at the chaos creature. “Take that demonic space creature thing. Nice try!”
Callum had no problem rubbing this mild victory in the creature’s face when it was somewhat trapped. That was perfectly safe, wasn’t it? Callum had his chest puffed up, all proud of his feat like an alpha male. In the back of his brain though, he was thinking that he should run while he could, all the way back to safety. Glancing backwards, he saw the outpost in the distance, as well Keren, who hadn’t run that far off at all. What if this thing got loose and came after them and everyone back at the outpost. Or worse, if it had friends it could get to seek revenge…
That just wouldn’t do. It was better to try and finish it now, before it could get any worse. Then Callum would be a hero! Everyone would shout his name and praise his awesomeness. It would be a tale to end all tales. “Keren! Help me out here, would you? Time is ticking, lets get ‘em while we can.”
So Callum took the ‘handle’ side of his kelp whip and tossed the whole thing at the hand’s fleshy blue underbelly. Which in retrospect was probably stupid, but he was just so pumped up from being successful the first time.

Keren was, you know, all in favor for Getting The ******** Out Of Doge - but Callum looked so helpless, and he'd been nice to her, and he'd even said her name right! Sighing heavily, because she was sure she was going to regret this later, Keren turned and trotted back towards the hand-crab, pulling her rock out of her pocket as she went.
It was time to try and finish the thing off. And then maybe they could continue down the path at a leisurely pace instead of fretting about falling through Space Potholes - right?
"SUCK THIS," shrieked the girl, heaving the rock at the monster's underside - a sloppy, forceful chestpass.

The rock tore straight into the demon hand's weak spot, causing it to scream in anguish -- the sound was horrifically loud and would remain ringing in their ears for quite a while. The incredible pain it was in spurred it to action, however... enough for it to yank itself free from its prison and head straight for the travelers! In it final throes of motion it managed to tackle one of them, leaking a powerful venom over their body before it finally perished. An odd number means Keren is hit. An even number means Callum was hit. Quote: The victim would remain unconscious for about two days. During that time they would be haunted with dreams -- incredible, vivid dreams -- of walking through crowds of people dressed in an all at once strange and familiar fashion. They were celebrating a holiday of some kind, with feasting and music abound, lively dancing throughout the night and somber prayer sessions during the sunrise. One thing that would strike the dreamer in particular was how unusual the sun was... though they couldn't quite place how...

The screech was absolutely painful to hear. Callum couldn’t even revel in what had happened. Keren’s rock had hit it, they had won. Finally, there was moment that he could be proud of. Out of this enter space experience he could feel a sense of accomplishment. But the shrill shriek took that away. Callum dropped to his knees and covered his hears. The blonde didn’t even see the thing coming; his eyes were shut tight.
Once the demon-hand disappeared, Callum was left slumped over on the rainbow road, a hand stuck to his ear and his eyes closed for who knew how long.
When Callum did open his eyes, what he saw was not the damaged road or Keren. Instead it was crowded road with people dancing and drinking in the middle of it, like it was Mardi Gras in New Orleans. In that dream state he didn’t even think anything of it.

Keren dove out of the way, hands clamped over her ears as the monster tumbled towards her and Callum. Thankfully (for her sake, at least), she was neatly missed by the bulk of the beast and the poison it was leaking... but her companion was not nearly so lucky. Keren rolled slowly to her feet and made her way over to the fallen young man, picking her way over rubble to get to him.
She gave his shoulder a tentative shake. "Cal?" she asked. "Callum?" She slapped his cheeks lightly, like she'd seen coaches do at basketball games after someone took a bad elbow. "C'mon, get up."
For one terrible moment, it occurred to Keren that her traveling companion and fire-forged friend might be dead. She pressed two fingers to his neck, felt the steady crawl of his pulse - no, not dead. The girl slapped Callum again, harder. "I can't carry you all the way back to Virgo," she hissed. Keren was tall and strong for a girl her age, but she couldn't toss a grown man into a fireman's carry and take him all those miles back to the temple.
Another slap met the unconscious man's cheek. "Get up! Damn it, get up!" snapped Keren, looking around sourly. It was creepy out here - just that rainbow road for miles and it had more potholes than a freeway in California. Even Keren, who prided herself on being un-squeamish, had to admit she had goosebumps. (Well, the goosebumps were obvious, it wasn't like she was wearing long sleeves or pants.)
Well, there was no way she could drag Callum across the pothole-stricken landscape in front of her. Even if she didn't stand a chance of getting him back to Virgo... maybe she could get him close?
(Probably not, but it was worth a try.)
"You are gonna owe me, like, a million favors if you ever wake up," declared Keren, looping her arms through Callum's armpits and beginning to pull. Walking back to Virgo backwards was going to be... interesting, to say the least.
