Oh, I HATE when you see a show and you know you're not going to be able to describe it in any way that will do it any form of justice. It was like that with Rent and Dralion both. Rent just because people just aren't that accepting of alternative lifestyles and especially not drag queens/transvestites. Because I thought it was sweet and I cried, the family I went with looked at me funny. Rent was my first Broadway musical. It was a life changing event for me. Not just in the sense that it was my first Broadway play, but that it was just a beautiful piece of art.

(side note: I just found out today that Constantine who played Roger on the most recent Broadway America tour is currently on American Idol. Hmm.)

Second was Dralion. It was so amazing my head is still spinning. I became the world's biggest fan of Cirque du Soleil that day. That also happened to be the day the power grid shut down. So I had to wait for everyone to get off their chests what they needed to say about how rediculous all this power going out is before I could talk about the amazing life-changing experience I had just gone through. Of course then I had to break the news to my mom that I had found my life's true calling and I was to become a clown.

I just saw...our town's performance of Peter Pan. biggrin Eventhough it was just a little community theatre bit, it's definately worth mentioning here.
Last Friday our 223 year old theatre burned down. With less than a week until opening night, every prop, costume, and set peice went up in flames.
Nevertheless...they managed to recreate everything intime for the performance! It totally rocked and you could tell that they were all putting that much more into it. 3nodding

This past week I went to New York with my drama club.

The shows we saw were: Wicked, Brooklyn, Phantom of the Opera and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

I loved them all. heart

Norbert in DRS was hilarious and I'd reccomend anyone to see it.

Brooklyn: I didn't like the storyline very much but the vocals were amazing and there were so many real moments in the show. Plus I loved the costumes. 4laugh

Phantom is amazing. heart We had second row seats. heart

Wicked is. . .Wicked. heart

I'm seeing DRS over Spring Break...I'm so excited!

Well, I saw DRS a few days ago.

It had it's pros and it's "cons" (hehe!)

Pros:
---Norbert Leo Butz is f*ckin' amazing! He = the show!
---John and Sherie are both good, not at good and I though they were going to be, but good never the less.
---The show was overall piss your pants funny! I loved how they kept going in and out of character at times and they had so many jokes that just fit with today ("I can finally afford a Broadway show!")
---The set rocked hardcore! ("Oh! It even turns!")
---Music was good. Not GREAT, but good.

Cons:
---For a musical comedy, it was much more comedy then musical. At points perhaps a little TOO much.
---Plot holes... many of them.
---Joanne Gleason was good, but her character was totally pointless after the first few scenes, yet they kept her around anyways. A sub plot was even created for her that left silly plot holes all over the place. At points it seemed like she was only there to kill time while people changed their costumes. It was a character that was completely detached from the rest. It was like.... HERE is the entire cast...

HERE is Joanne Gleason's Character.

Lets see....recent plays i have seen...

~Sweet Charity premier with Christina Applegate- AWESOME!!! I LOVED EVERY MINUTE
~The Giver- it was put on by a college in my town...pretty much crap. i love the book though
~West Side Story- Put on by a high school in my city...so you would think it would be crap...but it was pretty awesome. Rich people schools... stare
~Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Saw there- It was pretty good. Put on by a community theatre. It was alright.

I've seen more then that, but i can't remember them right now. I am currently house managing Babes in Arms at my high school. Basically i'm the stage manager's b***h. Hehe. its going to be a really good performance.

Last night I went to Hello Dolly at my old high school. Now, don't get me wrong, I love all my little underclassmen to death, but *sigh* sometimes I just want to yell notes at them.
But I learned something. When I'm watching a show that I'm not involved in I'm waaaaayy too over-anylitical. My train of thought over the course of the show:
Ashley enunciate. ENUNCIATE! Quiet feet. Steady on the followspots. Watch the curtains backstage. Careful backstage. I can see you. Quiet backstage Quiet feet! BACKSTAGE SHUT UP! enunciate more! i can't understand you! Dancers, dont' watch your feet. Mikey project I can't hear your lines! Louder Frank! Quiet backstage!

it goes on. But for high school, they did a good job overall. Dolly's energy
was too constantly high, without peaks and valleys if you follow me. made me tired and sometimes sounded monotonous. It was hard to listen to. A lot of the chorus kids I knew don't have a lot of experience and didn't have any energy at all. I couldn't decide if they made the one who had energy look bad, or if she made everyone else look bad. (she rocked)

I just got home from a week in New York! It was so great...our hotel was in the theatre district and we were just a few streets away from Wicked. Phantom was in the same building! We didn't get to see it though. I was kinda bummed about that, since that'd been my top show to see.
Anyway, we got standing-room for Hairspray...which will forever rock like a pebble. My only complaint is that they came out in the audience too much. It was so funny when the guys dressed as cops ran down the aisle, because my friend Kristen was freaking out. She thought something was happening and the real police were there. The finale was great...there weren't any more standing-room people but us so we were rocking out. Afterwards we stayed for autographs and got nearly everyone!
We saw Steele Magnolias the second night. It was really good. It would have been better if we hadn't gotten lost earlier and walked all over most of the theatre district. We were all exhausted. I got my picture taken with Delta Burke though. smile
The next night, we saw Fiddler on the Roof! Lol, nosebleed section. I saw a lot of things I liked better than our production, but there were things from our performance I liked better. I'm sorry to all the Harvy fans out there, but I didn't really like him as Tevye. He was great for the comedy parts, but some of the more intense scenes weren't that great. It rocked overall though.
Last night in town...we tried Phantom...the guy said they had standing room. I got all excited then he said it wasn't until tomorrow...That was depressing. We also tried Wicked, but I wasn't planning on seeing it anyway. We ended up seeing Chicago. It was good. The lady playing Velma totally ruled the performance.
I loved it all...I didn't want to come home, lol.

Last night I went to UND's performance of The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man-in-the-Moon Marigolds. Frikin awesome. They were all absolutly incredible. I was kind of sad tho, cause the director (in her infinite stupidity, no one knows why) randomly decided that Jesi and Jesse Jo were going to share the roles of Ruth and Nanny. I'm good friends with Jesi, but last night Jesse Jo was playing Ruth. Oh well. She was still really good. The old age makeup was great. She looked so decrepid! and the drooling was hilarius. And Janice Vicary was highly amusing. Just wonderful.
All in all, the show was quite depressing. It made my mom start to cry.

I wrote a rant about this the other day, but never got around to posting it. So I now bring you the shorterned version.

I saw the Broadway revival of "La Cage Aux Folles" this past weekend. The SHOW was very good. The men in the ensemble were amazing! They did this 5-10 minute can can number with backflips and highkicks and it was just amazing.

The set was... so so. Nothing jaw dropping, but nice.

But then... there was Robert Goulet. Oh dear. Worst performance by and actor I have EVER seen in the 11 years I have been attending shows in New York. I mean, I understand that it was only his second day, but come ON people, who goes out on stage not knowing their block? Or their lines? OR the dances? OR THE SONGS?! He was horrible! The worst thing was he mumbled, so all the jokes got ruined cus he humbled with the punchline.

He will be the downfall of that show! They NEED a replacement!

So in short, great show to see, as long as Goulet is out that day.
