"You join them, Ian, and you lose your soul. I know you're scared, but is keeping yourself safe worth hurting people? Killing them? You'll be signing up to murder, and treat human beings like animals to be farmed. I know you're scared, but you're not a coward."

He watched them, suddenly finding himself thinking less of his friend. He understood fear and helplessness all too well, but he had never considered hurting other people to protect himself an option.

"Why should you be stronger? It shouldn't matter how many there are of you: you only want more soldiers to fight for you blindly, to give their lives for your cause, a cause that you don't wholly believe anyway. It's that chaos in you guiding your actions, not any choice you made, and don't try to tell him, or me, otherwise. You're fighting because you're told to, ordered to, and because you're basically controlled. You don't need any more sheep in your flock."

Camelot growled, shaking his head. Maybe he was in a worse mood than usual, but no one liked to be backed into a corner. He was on the lower ground, so to speak. And Camelot couldn't do the one thing he knew would help.

He looked at Ian.

"Whatever power you need, you have inside you. You don't need anyone reaching into your chest, grabbing that power, and forcing darkness inside you. It's called Corruption, Ian, for a reason. You will no longer be the man you know. The man I know. You'll think you are, but every action you make will be tainted by brainwashing. As much as he spouts off against those of us on the 'Order' side of things, we don't have to have our powers forced into us by anyone else. We're born with it, we carry it inside us. You might never have it awakened, or you might be something powerful, sleeping, but you'll never know if you throw your life away now."

"I don't want to be a soldier or anything, I just want to be able to hold my own against-" he waved his arms around, unable to articulate what he thought of all the insanity he had been through, and seen on the news. "Against all of the crazy stuff."

He felt his anger starting to fade, though, and the red-haired boy worried that it made his uncertainty and frustration too obvious again. Ian shied away from both the sides, shaking his head. "Maybe I've got human power, but apparently it's just not good enough for your plans for this city. It's looking more and more like I'll get trampled in this war while I'm waiting around for something to just happen. How many more times do I have to get beaten up before whatever power I have inside me will wake up?"

A bitter laugh, eyes rolled to one side of one used to what had just happened. “Beautiful, just beautiful. And you even bought into it so willingly…there must be some sweet poison to your words knight.” He spread his hands as he spoke. “We don’t have to fight, Don’t group me in with those senshi! Don’t question my morals” He said in a mocking tone and then swapped to repeat the sudden shift in statements.

“Oh but then, for one who says we don’t have to fight what… interesting statements you make. “If you join them you loose your soul? Really now, I’m going to start calling you Janus, if you want to try and convince me you are NOT just like the –torturing, murdering, self righteous senshi then you’re going to have to work a great deal harder in not sounding like them when you become suddenly desperate to make sure YOUR party line is the one swallowed.”

“You are so quick to assume, spitting out small angry words to justify yourself ‘We just want more soldiers’, but heaven forbid someone who’s been at this longer tell what he has SEEN of the motivations you’re so quick to defend. At least ours are NOT sheep even if that’s all the vocabulary you can manage to refer to us as, it’s our thinking that makes us dangerous rather than our PRIDE dividing us, does that perhaps ring too close to home?”

He lifted his chin and narrowed his eyes. “So quick to forgive those of their own ranks for what they did, removing limbs, eyes and more but so quick to condemn those who fight against them, whatever pretty words they offer remember one thing young man. It’s a war… that’s the most honest thing you will hear out of either side, they say no one forces them, but unlike us, I do wonder if they can turn it away, I’ve yet to see one even –try. Allow me to show you the ‘force’ he’s so sure is all we have to offer. Poor knight with all his righteous judgment.”

He gave a sweeping bow, noble almost for all that might otherwise be cast against him, their lots in this war determined long before this conversation and both assure of their place in it, as perhaps was proper.

"I know how you feel, Ian, I really do."

It was true. Camelot had wished for the same thing, in his own way. He had always been afraid of the youma, the chaos, but his fear had been filtered through his concern for the senshi. He always felt useless, helpless to aid them when they constantly put themselves in danger for him. As a civilian, he was just a liability. It wasn't the same, maybe, as just being scared and wanting to defend himself, but Camelot wasn't so noble as to deny needing that security in his life, as well.

He looked at Zinkenite and frowned, holding his little shield up and standing his ground. He would have to make a move if the man tried to go for Ian anyway. Whatever he had to do, Camelot would not let chaos take someone he knew and cared about from him. he couldn't explain why he was so deeply, vehemently against this. He knew that he was supposed to be the voice of peace, that was what he took on himself, and Zinkenite had some good points. But no, it was not enough.

Camelot would not let them have Ian. Not without a fight. Whatever had to happen, Camelot would protect the life Ian had now.

But it seemed the Negaverse agent was leaving, not picking to choose a fight. Still, the knight of Earth held his ground.

Maybe he was making a mistake in all this. Talk of morality was intimidating. Was wanting to be more than he was inherently wrong? Was it still wrong now that he knew there were people who actually were more than human? ... Was this what he really wanted while still in high school?

Ian's time to wonder was limited, as he froze, catching the sound of something unnatural nearby. Eyes widening, he backed towards the wall of the nearest building, looking between the two people before him who did happen to be blessed with powers. Or cursed with them.

"It's after me, again, right?" he growled at them. "The monsters don't care who's right or wrong, they just go after those of us who can't fight back. Like any animal would."

It didn’t so much growl, as it gurgled, low in the bulbous throat, something like a frog and a lion producing an unholy gargoyle of a child. It crept towards them, a hunger in its glossy black eyes. Claws ticked against the sidewalk as it crawled forward bellow low to the ground. A thick fat tongue rolled out of its mouth tasting the air before lashing forward to scant inches away from the young man who had come so close to corruption.

It belched out a sound, between a croak and a roar, exposing few teeth, but those it had were sharp like snake fangs. “BAAHRUMMMM” it belched.

"Youma don't discriminate, but they also know not to attack those with Chaos in them. Everyone else, however, is fair game for some food. They steal energy and starseeds, and are generally... not nice."

It wasn't really the time for a lesson in youma handling, but they had a problem on their hands and Camelot often found himself distracted by safer thoughts when he was worried. But he knew how to focus, and he shook every other thought away to look at the youma.

It was certainly one of the ugliest he had ever seen.

"Be careful, Ian!" Camelot moved to defend the young man, shield up and stance wide. He had to make sure the youma did not get through to the civilian, but he was dreading getting hit by that thing. It looked like it was going to be a strong hitter, and those fangs were more than a small worry. Still, what choice did either of them have?

"You need to get out of here, I can hold it off!" Probably. He hoped.

It was anyone's guess whether or not Ian would remember Camelot's lesson in youma later on, but for the moment, he nodded anyway, his eyes fixed on the creature as it came into view. He edged behind the Knight, liking the look of the shield he carried, but, for all that he was really quite a coward, the red-haired boy was not quite about to run away. Maybe not just yet.

"Do they die if you hit them enough? Or is there something special you have to do to kill them?" The self-conscious part of him hoped his voice was not wavering too much.
