Gilbert had been close to death exactly once before this. He'd had a hairy situation when he was working Narcotics; a drug bust had gone bad, and when they went bad, they went bad fast. He remembered the entire operation coming down in a matter of moments, recalled the bright, sharp pain that had left a bullet hole just above his collarbone. Drug lords were gun happy, who knew?
But that had been nothing like this. There was no bus to take him to the hospital, no way to assuage the pain that he was slowly becoming numb to -- and that wasn't a good sign, was it? His ******** ribs were cracked. Every time he breathed it was like someone was raking fire-tipped knives down his insides, and yet... it was starting to dull. Maybe he had just reached his goddamn pain threshold.
Awesome.
He swayed where he stood, blinked furiously. He was exhausted, he'd been thrown all over creation and back, and he had more than one broken bone. It was time to get off the damn ride. He shook his head quickly, clearing his vision, and brought his good arm up to gingerly swipe blood off his forehead.
Had Gilbert been able to speak, much less breathe, without pain, he might have attempted to make some conversation. For now, he was just going to goddamn stand there until he passed out or got some medical attention.
Seemed like a plan.

Green, as he now preferred to be called over the what the ******** that'd been going on since arriving in space, probably got off better than most.
He hit his head, and sounds were kind of fading in an out like he was underwater. He gingerly held his head, seeing stars and squeezing his eyes shut for a second, hoping they'd go away. And in addition to everything, his broken finger was still killing him.
He looked around at everyone, cringing at the other injuries, but especially worried when he spotted the unconscious body of Sailor Cancer. His first instinct was to skitter over to her and check her out, but not only was he afraid to make any sudden movements on account of his head, he felt somewhat sheepish in the presence of Soldier Virgo and wondered for a second, if he needed the magical space lady's opinion to rush to the other magical space lady.
Afraid to say too much just yet, he carefully got to his feet and dusted off his scrubs with a small groan.
"Ugh, what happened?" He half whimpered to no one in particular.

Mal was unsurprisingly adept at laying motionless and staring into space. The lingering pain represented a significant problem, but besides something being quite obviously fractured in her foot, her current situation was no different from the countless nights she spent blazed out of her mind, gazing up at the glow-in dark stars that decorated her bedroom's ceiling.
Unfortunately, those nights were usually accompanied by the manic depressive mumbling of Justin Vernon or Matt Berninger. All she had now were the pained voices of her fellow civilians which, despite being just as sad as the music she usually listened to when toking up, did little to brighten her mood. She closed her eyes, trying desperately to conjure those first sweet key strokes of "Exile Vilify" in her head, but unable to focus on anything other than the dull throbbing of her entire body.
She lifted a bloodied hand to wipe away the tears from her eyes. She didn't consider herself the weepy type, and the fact that a space whale had caused her to cry twice in the span of an hour was very embarrassing. A sharp intake of breath through her teeth tried to suck all those emotions back in, but doing so only caused a sharp tightening in her chest. Mal mentally added a few bruised ribs to the growing list of damages, jotting them down directly beneath her bruised ego.
Mal rolled her head to the side as she heard Captain Virgo approach. "We'll gather them over here." Gather them...? The hell they would! Mal refused to accept the severity of her injuries, and wasn't about to allow herself to be used as a battered beacon for the incapacitated. She was totally capacitated!
"No!" Mal blurted. "No, I'm fine." Straining what little strength had returned to her, she managed to lift herself into a sitting position, with only a slightly unattractive amount of sweating and swearing. "You should gather everyone around somebody worse off than me. Like, uh..." Mal looked around. "That chick." She pointed at Sailor Cancer with one hand while she used the other to clutch her side. "She's barely breathing. Me? I'm breathing fine." She took an exaggerated gasp of air, grimacing as she once again caused her chest to seize up.
"See?" she wheezed. "I'm, like, the ******** master of breathing."

Eric winked at Candice "Not to worry luv, you can pay me back by sharing a drink with me when were all safe."
The ringing had mostly died down in his ears, he could hear all right except for out of his left ear. He lifted a finger to it, and when he withdrew it he saw blood on the tip. He suddenly remembered something a friend had once told him about spinal injuries and bleeding ears, but he shook off the thought.
Not now Eric, too much left to do to worry yourself over something that cant be helped.
He looked over to Virgo, who appeared to him at least to be at least somewhat in control of the situation.
"Sorry miss, but could you come again? I think I may have mussed up my hearing."

What happened next had been absolute chaos, and Felicia could not have properly recalled the events that transpired directly after Felix had been sucked within the whale's massive belly, but she had the vague recollection that everyone had gotten scattered about. Violently. This lack of memory could have been contributed to everything happening so damn fast, or it just might have had something to do with the way her skull had bounced off the rainbow road when she'd landed on it for the second time.
For a moment or two after landing the teen hadn't moved, but instead lay perfectly still. Staring up at the stars that stretched endlessly around them. It really was quite beautiful. If she were going to die out here, and it was beginning to look as though that was the case, at least she had a something pretty to look at first.
Staying still wasn't going to be an option though, and before too long had pushed herself up into something resembling a sitting position. She groaned as dark streamers slide across her vision, and had to press a hand against the ground to keep herself from falling over again as the world seemed to tip beneath her. However unwise it might have been to stand she pushed to her feet anyways, and was actually surprised to find her newly acquired issues with balance didn't get anyway worst. She was shaky, there was a massive headache threatening at the back of her head, but she was upright and walking wasn't out of the question.
Others didn't seem to be so fortunate. Squinting around her(the light, however diffused, was beginning to hurt her eyes.), she caught sight of a familiar-ish face, and made her slow way towards him. It was the cop that had been trying to organize everyone before s**t had gone to hell in a hand basket, and he looked as though a hard breath would knock him over. Her own injuries suddenly didn't seem half so bad. "Hey, you need a hand?"
Helping perfect strangers out, specifically strange men, wasn't usual behavior for the young woman, but these were not the most normal of circumstances. She slide up beside Gilbert and very carefully stretched his arm across her shoulders so he could lean on her for support. She had no first aid training- something she was going to be looking into on the unlikely chance they returned home from this- but she could still help him. She even reached a small hand up to smooth her thumb and the side of her palm along his brow so the blood would stop dripping into his eyes. "You're kind of a mess right now, aren't you?" Yes Felicia, make jokes. This is totally the time for it. "What's your name?"

“I’m having a really hard time being optimistic right now.” Admitted a dazed and in pain Dannay. She’d had her arm broken by a Bat but she wasn’t even the worst of them. That was more than a little scary in and of its self. She was more than a little scared and now a little concussed. “I’m so confused… did the whale blow up or did we just make it sick?” She shook her head dazed and then wished she hadn’t.
“Oh hey! The space whale hasn’t got cancer anymore… we cured cancer of her space whale affliction…kind of. She’s not looking so hot…whale chemo must suck.” She rambled dazedly. “…That was kind of not appropriate right?” She murmured after a moment raising her good hand to her head. “My arm really hurts… my head hurts too this sucks, I think I preferred studying, and I’m SO never going on whale watch again…bastards…”

Someone approached him and lent him a shoulder to lean on, and while Gilbert didn't immediately recognize who it was, he was grateful for the assistance. When his options were swaying until he faceplanted and leaning on someone he didn't know, Gilbert would take the latter -- especially since he couldn't really tell what the hell was going on anymore.
He leaned hard on the girl, turning to blink slightly confused gray eyes at her. She looked familiar... huh. Somewhat. Too young to be a booty call, so...
Right. That girl at the beginning of all this bullshit. He remembered she'd been compliant. Well, he liked her already.
"Hey," he said, though it was more than a wheeze than anything. Then, after a moment, he added, "Cracked ribs." and his pinched face explained better than that.
He didn't appreciate the joke, but what the hell could he do about it? Nothing, and he knew sometimes people used humor to deflect stressful situations. Gilbert, he drank, but there was not only no first aid handy but no liquor handy, and that was a damn shame. He couldn't drank himself into a blackout to avoid the pain, or at least numbed it some with whiskey. But nope, he had to wait for the shiny little girl to do some sort of magical bullshit and get him out of here.
Well, at least Virgo had helped him up earlier. He had no idea what the ******** she was doing now, but apparently it was more important than... he didn't even know. He slumped harder against Felicia and decided to just stop fighting it. Pain was pain, and he was going to have to deal with it for now.

A better look at the guy now leaning on her showed he seemed even worst off then she had originally assumed. The head injury was the most obvious thing thanks to the blood that kept seeping slowly along his brow line, and she could help but reach up again to wipe away another dribble that threatened to fall into his eye. Now that she was close enough to really look at him though, she saw that one of his wrists had taken a rather nasty hit. Broke or fractured, it was swollen and starting to turn a rather ugly shade of reddish purple. It didn't seem as though breathing was all that easy for him either, let alone talking. He'd managed to croak out 'cracked ribs', so that certainly explained that.
Really it was a wonder he was standing at all. Her own head was beginning to throb from when it'd smacked against the rainbow path beneath them, but now that she was actually upright the world had actually stop tilting unexpectedly. Sure there was a bit of her peripheral obscured by solid gray, but all things considered, it would have been worst. She could have been in the same sort of shape at the guy beside her. If nothing else he was a reminder for how much better off she was then she felt. Self pitty could wait until later.
"Ah," offered a little uselessly, frowning as she slumped a little more heavily against her. her hand coming up automatically to press against his hip so his ribs weren't resting so solidly against her. Even standing wasn't easy for him, her boney a** shoulder couldn't have felt very nice against his chest.
They needed a medical. There had to be at least one EMT, nurse, or doctor among them. Faint wasn't that cruel. ...Was it? ********, she hoped not. Though now that she was searching the crowd of those around them she couldn't help but notice there were a lot less people around then there had been, and a few familiar faces were just gone. Rather unexpectedly that realization made her chest tight. Felix was a stranger, but he'd also saved her, and whatever that stupid space whale had done to them before this had left a lasting memory of feelings for the boy she couldn't quite explain. "I hope the others are all ok."

Somewhere along the rainbow bridge, Veer had perhaps gone into shock. He liked to think of himself as a tough guy -- the curses tumbling out of his mouth certainly always seemed to prove that -- but in reality his exposure to the vast greatness of space and huge creatures moaning their unhappiness had properly shaken him. He'd followed the crowd meekly, staring up at the creature and dodging its attacks, eyes huge and arms mostly thrown over his head.
Thank god no one had seemed to notice.
He didn't scream as he careened to the air, still too stunned to truly, properly react. It wasn't until his head collided with the earth that he seemed jogged back into himself. Pain blossomed in the back of his head, ears ringing for the moment, and as he awakened, his mouth opened.
The curses that spilled out were...creative. And largely physically impossible.
He should have been grateful, as he was wobbling up to his feet again, that he'd been dressed only in pajama pants as he arrived. Had he been wearing his usual attire, covered in buckles and spikes and steel toes and dangly charms, he probably would have done more damage to himself than just a bump on the head. Should have been but wasn't. Instead he looked furious that he hadn't properly gotten a real look around before, that he hadn't impressed any of the people around him, that he hadn't taken out that mother ******** space whale entirely on his own.
Seconds could have soloed that boss.
His eyes twitched to the people around him, flitting from one to the other but largely migrating to the young woman in the short skirt. He liked young women in short skirts and crazy outfits. That was why he watched so much anime.
A couple deep breaths, fingers buried into the greasy mess of his hair, and Veer blinked a few times. "...gathering for what now? Where we goin'?"

She smiled a little at the girl who spoke first (Molly) and nodded. "That's good," she told the girl; "So come over here." Looking around at the civilians, she couldn't really tell which were worst off; Leo would know better, she thought, and then she thought that she wished he was here. As for Cancer, if she remembered correctly the best care she could get would be here--at least some of the instruments in the medical wing at Chronos Castle or even on the first floor of her own temple would be functioning. The medical profession, by and large, wouldn't be able to handle injuries inflicted by Chaos, not as well as any of them could.
Maybe someone here had some kind of mechanical expertise and take a look at the things that didn't work?
Another girl spoke (Candace) and she smiled at her too. "If I need you, I'll ask, don't worry. I need to prioritize, though..." The bleeding ones had to go first, she decided; the standing man with the shallow breathing (Gilbert) especially. She didn't know how to to describe the rattling noise she heard, except... wet. And wet sounds from someone breathing that shallowly were never, ever good.
"You're in the Surrounding, you were attacked by a giant whale, and now I am taking the most injured of you home," she informed the boy who had just landed (Green). Mal, unfortunately, did not get a smile, just a polite look. Watching the civilian struggle made Virgo want to tear her hair out, but she didn't know what was broken and didn't want to hurt the woman. "Cancer is staying here," she said, "We can take care of her better than Earth can. That thing that attacked her, a doctor probably can't treat it. But we'll find a way."
She also desperately wanted to tell the woman that if she was feeling so fine, she could try standing up. But Virgo wasn't that mean, she thought, and felt virtuous for keeping her mouth shut on that thought.
It was much harder on her to not snap at Dannay. Her olive eyes narrowed, the uncertain smile flattened out into a thin line. "Excuse me," she said, quietly. "Sailor Cancer is not a disease. She is my friend. We have been comrades fighting monsters just like that whale since before you were even born." Coming from a girl who looked to be about sixteen, this seemed a little ridiculous. "She was injured trying to protect you. Your actions are more than a little ungrateful, so please mind your ******** manners and show some respect."
People seemed to be done complaining. Which was good, as Virgo's patience had just run out for civilian antics. She was taking them home, right then. "I'm going to take these two--" she pointed the arm with the unbroken wrist towards Gilbert and Mal "--home first. I'll come right back for the next group..." After a moment's thought, she pointed out Molly and Cameron. "After I've arranged transportation for everyone to the hospital."
She ushered Gilbert and the girl he was leaning against over to Mal, and then she crouched down near the two adults. "You're going home," she said to the boy in pajama pants (Veer). "After those four." She set one hand, holding her cell phone, on Mal's shoulder, took hold of Gilbert with the other.
With a small pop!, Virgo vanished--but Gilbert and Mal remained right where they were.
[Virgo will only be gone for a minute ICly, but I'm going to break here so you can react! The next post will come around 6pm EST.]

Being moved around from place to place was not doing him any favors health-wise, but Gilbert wasn't really in a position to complain. Not vocally, anyway. His expression was a terrible study of anger and pain, but considering it took most of his focus to simply breathe without hurting himself further, there wasn't a whole lot he could do at the moment. He was working on ignoring the pain, anyway.
It didn't really occur to him that he wouldn't be taken home. The skeptic in him should have doubted it, but he'd seen so many bizarre things go down in a matter of hours that the next logical step was that he would be teleported away and the nightmare would be over.
Unfortunately, the laws of reality and physics decided to kick back in just when they were wanted least, and while the girl supporting him disappeared just fine, Gilbert was left standing and leaning on Felicia.
Inside his head, he was swearing up a blue streak. The only thing that he vocalized, however, was his apparent choice of the day for swear words: ********.

Mal opened her mouth to further protest, searching for a reason not to be sent home first. But despite how much she wanted to deny her injuries, she couldn't find a sensible argument against the idea. She knew that the act of breathing was not supposed to cause pain spasms, and the tingling stiffness in her leg told her that any immediate attempts to move would result in a world of hurt. That didn't stop a wave of guilt from washing over her, though, barely able to look up at the others who wanted out of this multicolored nightmare just as badly as she did. She closed her lips, giving a silent nod and looking a bit sheepish.
Mal shut her eyes as she felt Virgo's hand upon her shoulder, bracing herself for another round of intergalactic teleportation. She tried to push the thoughts of doom and destruction from her head, envisioning the whale bursting through the marble moments after they disappeared to swallow everyone up forever. A lifetime of trying to explain her survivor's guilt to therapists as the result of a space whale did not sound particularly inviting.
After the pop, Mal opened her eyes, and for all her thoughts of not wanting to leave everyone behind, her reaction to the sight of the same beaten up civilians staring expectantly at her was less than enthusiastic.
"Oh, ******** awesome. My room turned into a space palace while I was gone."

Mal hadn't moved so much as an inch, it seemed. With a snort -- obviously unimpressed, Veer locked his eyes onto her, his head tipped to the side and his very expression oozing sarcasm. "What, is she going to get a space ship or something? Didn't realize we'd mastered that tech."
In all honesty, he would not have minded one bit heading home. Home would have meant retreating back into his apartment, potentially in time to hop in on his raid. At this point, he was probably late. Maybe they'd replaced him with a lesser rogue. This thought made him frown, melting the defiance from his expression some. Unless he came up with a good excuse, he could get demoted for this...

Eric watched, frowning slightly when the girl dissapeared and left them all there, alone.
"Right..."
He didnt expect much reaction from that, so he knelt, pulling his belt off and knotting the end with the buckle.
"If anyone isnt too hurt, could we perhaps get those that are together and make a circle or something around them? Theres no telling if one of these weird things might come back, and right now were in no shape to hold em off."

Candice blushed as Eric winked at her. She nodded slightly, but said nothing else as Virgo spoke again. She had no objections to the bleeding leaving first, but what did she count as? Looking down at her arm, she wished that she didn't have to land on her arm. With a fall like that, from outer space, would a normal doctor be able to fix this?
"I guess I can start the circle," Candice muttered as she sat down, close to where Virgo had disappeared. "She should be back any second... Right?"
Strong, confident Candice had nothing more she could do, so she just sat there, cradling her broken arm on her legs that were tucked in close to her chest. She looked over at Molly and Cameron. "I hope you two go home safely. It would be nice if we'd meet again, but hopefully in better circumstances..."
