The fact that she wasn't staring at his butt was unknowingly a very good thing for them both. Girls made him nervous, extremely nervous, but Dani was clearly not a girl- She was a Woman of Action and that seemed to make all the difference. Not that he was even aware that anyone of the female persuasion would look at his backside, but it was just one more thing he didn't have to worry about as he looked concentrated on his way down.
He could already feel himself come unbalanced as she called up to him about his left leg and letting his faith in her abilities and his own balance keep him steady he righted himself and with his face all scrunched up he focused more on staying perfectly balanced between his left and his right. "Like this? Am I too tight, I feel like my legs and muscles are going to lock." He already knew exactly what kind of pain that was going to cause, like hitting water in a belly flop but all the shock would go up into his knees and hips.
Taking every little word his new partner said with incredible seriousness and pairing it with his own experiences climbing he knew that even if he did mess up she'd be okay and that he'd be able to walk it off. Unless of course she was lying to him ... His hold on the rope tightened just a little before he blew out and tried to push all negative thoughts away.
Taking the last foot with more, relative, ease he smiled and turned around to face her. Stripping himself of his gear as he did so he held his arms up in a victory pose. "You helped me survive the way down! You're awesome!" She was awesome. He hoped she knew that.
He was gonna tell her. So much.

If asked, Dani wouldn't lie -- she was a little nervous while Braden made his way down -- but she kept up a steady stream of enthusiastic support while he made his descent. Sometimes, it was just as important to have a pep talk as it was to have someone sturdily holding the line at the base of the wall! Okay, maybe it wasn't as important, but it was definitely important. A little bit of confidence would take someone a very long ways, and she knew that better than most, having more than her fair share of personal confidence. That aside, Dani was naturally a very enthusiastic, cheerful person... so long as her ego wasn't threatened.
Braden was not threatening her ego at all. In fact, he seemed to be doing everything in his power to pump it up! So he was getting nothing but smiles and good humor out of her. Had Dani actually taken the time to think about that and how superficial an arrangement it was, she might have been bothered, but she was blissfully unaware of how easy it was to manipulate her.
(This was probably to the best for both of them.)
To the amusement of the young man behind the counter, Dani not only mimicked Braden's victory pose but let out a whoop for him, expression clearly delighted. "Yes! You did awesomely! Of course, I helped a lot, but that's nothing to be ashamed of. You did really well for your first time on a rock wall. High five," she decided, holding up her hand expectantly.

A high-five! One of those things Braden had only seen on the television or read in a comic book about teen friends overcoming obstacles!
Okay, not really, but to the boy it felt exactly like that. Like this was the first time anyone had wanted to congratulate him for anything. It was an incredibly feeling and the rush of good emotions had him feeling intoxicated. Giddy even. Laughing openly and from deep within his gut, which he was sure he'd done more than his fair share of already today, he raised his hand and slapped his palm against hers.
As soon as that was done-- Braden had no idea what to do. They'd climbed walls. They had even talked about going cliff diving and running together. What was next? The kiss, he wanted to say but that didn't seem right. Wasn't there always something more before lips got to smack? Chewing on his bottom lip he frowned as he tried to figure it out.
