“I’m not nearly as bad at Hemming as I used to be.” She said with a wan smile. Her sister used to be by far the best. “I just have that dress there I’m working on, I’m trying to make a nice creepy something for Halloween. They had that corset design on line that showed a cut away of a rib cage. I thought I might make one with ribs sewn into it instead!”

"...oh, halloween..." that made Jude go unfocused, seam-ripper in one hand and vest in the other, not quite started on tearing out the old lining bit by bit. He wanted to keep the pieces whole, more or less, to copy what he could. Easier said than done, but it was worth the effort.
"...I wonder how that'll go." He set to it, then, viciously tearing at the thread. "I mean, what with the weirdness and all the costumes in every day life, things could get special, couldn't they?"

“Probably no worse than Christmas.” She said with a wry smile. All the forced cheer there had been in the last few years even her bright optimism about the season had started to dim.
“If anything, maybe Halloween will be the most honest season with the way things have been going in this city.”

"I wasn't...I missed Christmas." He'd heard about it, in a vague, distant sort of way, but he certainly hadn't beet there. rumons, filtered through the vine, blurry and hard to see pictures on Reddit, Jude was never at the heart of it, never actually got to witness anything exciting with his own eyes.
Honestly, though, he wasn't sure if that was good or bad. Kept him alive at least. And he had enough problems, some of the time. But it was a good story, and one he was missing out on...
"I'll probably stay home. Give candy to the kids."

“You should come to the dance!” She said nudging her shoulder into his. “After the last one with the crazy ghost thing that people pulled off, and the snarling cake, It’d be kind of exciting don’t you think? I mean it might be boring but the anticipation would make for some fantastic stories…and you could show off your handiwork more!”

"Um. What, you wanna go with me?" It was relatively deadpan, perhaps carefully so, with his head tipped to the side and his face mostly turned away. Just watching her out of the corner of his eyes. Well played: it could come across teasing or earnest, depending on how she wanted to interpret it. Jude didn't tease or joke much, perhaps, but that didn't mean he couldn't now and then...
He plucked out another stitch, clearing his throat.

“Absolutely!” She replied, on the oblivious side that anyone else might have a crush on her, especially such a good friend. “We could make a whole party of it! OH! I should introduce you!” She said her eyes wide as she realized she’d been negligent on that front.

Her reply made him drop his seam ripper, startled, made him blink up at her in a baffled sort of way. He definitely hadn't been expecting a 'yes'. A laugh, maybe a condescending pat on the head, perhaps something dismissive to send him on his way. It lit up his eyes, smoothed a usually-wrinkled brow and softened the corners of his mouth --
but. Wait. It crumpled slowly back toward confusion as he stooped to search on the floor. "...um. Introduce me?"

“Um…” She hesitated turning pink in the cheeks like she found what she was going to say next a very strange concept. “There’s this, well His name is Daniel, and… he asked me out. Like not friends out like….’OUT’ out.” She turned a deep shade of red and helped him search valiantly for the seam ripper.
“I thought everyone…kind of thought I was too odd for that what with the medical books and the Lolita. But I think you’d really like him!”

"...oh." A pause to consider, his head tipped down to properly hide his face, fingers filing curling around the dropped seam ripper. Jude was calculating, considering diplomacy, trying to determine what answer would put her the most at ease -- and also spare his own bruised pride. At least she hadn't picked up on the blossom of excitement in his eyes.
"Oh. Well. Yes. Daniel." So play at indifference, as if he'd known that all along, casual as he slowly rose back to stand. "But is it just the two of you going, or more?"

‘Well…I’d like it if we could all go.” She said nervously. “Are you ok?” she’d caught on to something at least, even if it was just a little too late.

"I don't want to intrude, if it's your..." Date night. But he didn't say that. He did look up at her again, a quick look, the seam ripper shifted in his hand. Unhappy, yes, but he did cover it pretty well, with a mild expression and faint curiosity. He'd keep it down and b***h about this to someone online later.
Already imagining the title. My awesome friend is dating a douchebag. Nevermind that he'd never met Daniel, had no evidence that he was actually a jerk...

“Well, maybe I’d like it to be a –friend- night?” She said, her face unmasked worry about his reaction. Maybe it was mean of her to try and force him to meet Daniel after all, Jude could be so sweet and shy and it might be traumatic to try and make that happen. “I think you’d like him, he’s trying to be a writer, horror novels!” Her eyes were bright at that idea, of course, it was her favorite genre next to true crime.

For just a moment -- oh god, thankfully a very brief moment -- horror walked across Jude's expression. Naked horror, his mouth opening and then snapping closed, his eyes sidling away so that she hopefully wouldn't pick up on the emotion and the attitude. Ume was dating some a*****e, and on top of everything else, he was a goddamned writer?
Jude rewrote the reddit rant in his head. It had more expletives in it. Expletives showed that you were mature and worldly, after all.
"Uh. I don't know. Maybe if I find a girl or something to go with me." Yank. Yank. He tore the lining as he tugged free a seam.

She leaned carefully against him, bumping her shoulder against his. “You want me to find you one?” She tilted her head with a playful smile. “I know some really pretty girls… pleaseeee Jude? You know I’d feel bad if you were left out, I’m sure it’ll be better than previous years and we can show off our handiworks.”
