El looked at the vixen surprised, "I never....really thought about it like that before." The male blinked in confusion. Did the Daeva's merely get upset with him because they found out that he wasn't truly an elk. Could everything boil down to their rage. it didn't seem possible, but then again her words rang so true. "I don't know. I have never bothered to ask them when they were attacking me." El shrugged his shoulders, "But I suppose what you are saying could be true....I do not know for sure."

Riley chuckled, though the sound wasn't one of humor. "I doubt they'd tell you even if you asked. On principle I give Daevas a wide berth, because their temperment can be so unpredictable. There are nice ones out there, I'm sure, but I'd be willing to get they're all touchy in their own ways."
Suddenly Riley threw back her head and laughed, as though privy to a joke only she knew, golden eyes squinched closed with a tear or two leaking through. She managed to get herself under control fairly quickly.
"I apologize. A stray thought crossed my mind and it amused me. See I have a friend, Kiyo. With your discomfort around large, winged foxes, I imagine he would have been terrifying to you." She chuckled again, wiping the moisture from the corners of her eyes with the back of her paw. "I do apologize if I seem to be taking my humor at your expense, but you'd have to know Kiyo like I do to see why it's so funny. Even without possibly being afraid of him, you'd still find him a very odd guy."

"I ain't afraid of them...I just....I don't like them is all." El looked at her stubbornly. There was no way he was going to let a vixen think that he was scared of anything. Cause he wasn't. Okay, maybe he was a little afraid of Daeva's but who wasn't. And he would still never be the one to say it out loud. That would be just too embarrassing. No, he was not afraid.
"So your friend.....he is a Phim then?" He cocked his head to the side. He wasn't that leery of them. Most of the ones that he had met had been fairly nice. And after learning that he in fact was not an elk, none of them ever tired eating him again. Unlike those damn Daevas. Once again he started to think about what the vixen had said. Could it be that they attacked him out of spite? Hm?

"Hmmm, close," Riley said. "Kiyo's a Guardian. He's feathery like a Phim, rather than those batty-looking ones. He isn't tied to a tribe right now, so for the most part he just wanders wherever he pleases and bestows his "great Guardian powers" to protect traveling friends who are so blessedly priveleged. Or cursed, depending on your way of seeing it," she said, with such a impish smile that the subject was obviously a well-worn one between her and her friend.
"Dunno if you've ever seen a Guardian before, or heard about them?" Riley tilted her head questioningly.

El looked at the female. Her friend sounded nice enough, though what friend was going to badmouth him. Generally you protected your friends right. He made a face as he looked at her, "Well...no....I've never heard of them before." He scratched his leg as he eyed the vixen.
"So your friend.....Kio?" He cocked his head, "Does he make a habit of just showing up randomly?"

((*fights the horrible, evil temptation to just drop Kiyo in the RP*))
"Kiyo," Riley corrected. "I know, the Y doesn't really seem to make a huge difference. Especially when you're talking fast, or even at a normal pace." She shook her head. "The giant feather-ball gave me a lecture over it once. I asked him why it mattered when it all sounded the same anyway, and he gave me back something about it being the principle of the matter."
Riley looked over El curiously again. "Okay, I'll describe Guardians. Obviously you've seen Daevas. Well Guardians are the same height up to the shoulder, but they're a bit taller since they have longer necks. Um, do you know what dragons are?"
She really hoped she wasn't going to give poor El a heart attack with this.

(lol El would so have a heart attack. lol but it would be funny.) "Dra....gon?" El's eyes nearly bugged right out of his head as he looked horrified at the vixen. And she was friends with such a monstrosity?! Had she completely lost her senses, or was she like his pet or something. The whole relationship boggled his mind the more he thought about it. El looked back at the small group of trees they happened to be in and silently thanked the Deities for the cover. If that creature was going to show up he would no doubt get eaten.
"Kiyo.....this friend of yours....he isn't by chance....a vegetarian is he?" He asked, maybe a little too hopeful.

Riley had been moving slowly forward while they talking. Now she was only eight feet from El, and this time she paused and sat. She was close enough now to be in easy conversation distance, and didn't want to get closer and spook El any further than he already was.
"Well I saw draconic cause that's what their necks and faces look like. They don't have fangs though, just beaks. Like giant birds. Their tails are a bit draconic too."
She gave El a reassuring smile. "Don't worry. Kiyo's a giant goof, but he'd never deliberately harm someone. I don't think he's a vegitarian, but that's only in winter when plants are scarce. He eats more plants than I do, if that tells you anything."

El frowned, great. This Kiyo wasn't a vegetarian, well he just had to hope never to run into the creature, that was for sure. Somehow it never occurred to him that the female was getting closer to him, until she wasn't up eight feet from him. Though it didn't cause him to feel anxious or anything. In fact, he was actually a little more relaxed then normal. Maybe it was because he had someone to talk to besides himself.
"Giant bird?" He blinked at her, "Fantastic...." He looked around, "So....can we change the subject? What are you doing out here?"

"Well for that, I'm going to have to give you a bit more information on Guardians," Riley said, with a slightly apologetic smile. She couldn't really empathize with El, having never been afraid of any of the winged subspecies or really anything at all. She could at least sympathize with not being comfortable with certain subjects though, if not the same kinds of subjects.
"Usually I travel together with Kiyo. Guardians are actually meant as protectors to us. They aren't born so much as they just appear, fully grown, sent by the Deities. They're genderless and can't have mates or families of their own, so they tend to adopt strays a lot."
A small wrinkle crease Riley's brows as she frowned in thought over her subject. "Primarily a Guardian is meant to guard tribes, but there are more Guardians than tribes, and it's never a guarantee that a certain Guardian and a certain tribe will work together. It's almost like their own version of lifemating, when a Guardian finds a proper tribe to look after. The tribe is like their family, and they're very protective over their "adopted" kin."
Finished, Riley's face relaxed and she gave El a smile. "Kiyo's not attached to a tribe, so he's the kind that picks up strays. On occasion he likes to go off on his own and explore, look for others to befriend or maybe a small group that's thinking of becoming a tribe. When he does I just wander around on my own. We're very good about finding each other, and neither of us are the types to just sit and wait. Itchy feet, I guess you could say. We like to be moving."

"Oh...." El looked at her surprised, "I didn't know that about Guardians." Knowing that they were created to protect rather then destroy did alleviate some of his apprehension about meeting this Kiyo. "You must know so much because Kiyo sorta...'adopted' you right?" El eyed the female, finding himself more relaxed in her presence.
Maybe she had a point, and he had been overreacting to his condition. With or without the horns he still looked like a fox. He could have simply had bad luck running into angry and or hungry Daeva's up to this point. Being constantly afraid of being eaten really wasn't the type of life he wanted for himself.

((....I don't know why, but suddenly I'm amused that El's text is a light blue and Riley's is a light pink XD It goes with their genders.))
Riley nodded, smiling. "I've known Kiyo for practically all of my adult life. He does look a bit intimidating on first sight, but once you get to know him he's just this big clown with a huge soft spot for kits." She chuckled with a hint of irony. "You could say I adopted him as much as he adopted me, since I was just starting out traveling at the time and we were both what each other needed. I think the only thing that could get that big lug to settle down would be to find a tribe, and even then I'm not entirely sure."
If Kiyo's nature was anything to go by, he might just find himself a tribe of rovers and would continue with his pattern of wandering...
Riley gave El a curious look. "What about you? You travel a lot, or do you prefer to stick to a known bit of territory." She found herself quite curious about the horned male.

El listened to her intently, something about her voice was soothing to him. And before he knew it there was actually a smile on his face. A smile! Nervously he tried to untie his tongue long enough to answer the vixen without sounding stupid.
"Well I guess it depends....Sometimes I like to travel around for awhile...then I usually find a place where I can settle down for an extended period of time. But normally I like to be on the move." El shrugged his shoulders trying not to blush. He didn't blush! The idea that this vixen could make his cheek flame terrified him slightly.
Just what the hell was wrong with him today?

Riley looked thoughtfully. "I'm guessing you're a loner, then? Not a whole lot of groups out there that travel around a lot." She could certainly wouldn't want to travel around with a large group! Then there'd be fighting over which direction they were going, which was the safest route and which was more exciting, whoes turn it was to do what, and always having to keep an eye on each other rather than actually enjoying the moment.
She could see traveling with one or two others at most though, that was acceptable and not quite so troublesome. She didn't think El had that right now though, or he'd either of mentioned it or the partner in question would be nearby. Or both.
Riley herself couldn't see wanting to settle down just yet. Maybe someday she'd like a family, but really she couldn't see herself ever staying in any one place for more than a season or two at most. That was long enough to raise kids to take care of themselves as adults, right?

"What? No." El said a little more sharply then he intended, "I am not a loner. I like to be around foxes....sometimes...But I just...haven't met anyone that likes to travel as much as I do." He shrugged his shoulders back, "Everyone wants to settle down, and that just isn't me. At least not right now it isn't."
He looked at her, maybe she could understand that. After all she was here right? Maybe that meant that she was a loner too. But she had said she was traveling with that Kiyo fellow occasionally. So not really a loner. A selective loner perhaps?
Shaking his head of the ridiculous thoughts he sighed, "What was I saying?"
