Yue had assumed she would never be with anyone. Not in a depressing, self-pitying way; one of her favourite hobbies was observation, collecting details about Lunarians. If she was partial to them, her ability to gather accurate information was hindered. And so she had never really lamented the idea of not being with anyone, which was likely why she had continued on loving Jianyu without pause. It just didn't matter who she loved; if she couldn't be with him, she didn't need to be with anyone. One of the more miraculous effects of the wedding, Yowai and Chishio were going to attend together. As a couple. It would be the first time anyone knew in public that they were together, even though they had been living with one another for all Yue's childhood.
Even though she had never thought of being married, never expected it to happen, she wanted to be with Jianyu in every capacity. Especially that one. And seeing Liwei and Ehuang, she knew that marriage could work, and she hoped that they would someday be so seamless. Yowai and Chichi had the same love, an unfaltering one which made sure that if one partner stumbled, the other would pull them to their feet again. Where one failed, the other would succeed for the both of them. That was how she wished to be with Jianyu. There were different ways couples could react to marriage, but the way Yue Lao wished to be seemed like something Jianyu would approve of, so she hoped it would succeed. It wasn't as though she had ever seen a successful marriage until Liwei and Ehuang, but the love between Jianyu's parents and between her parents seemed so similar that she didn't really think it was a necessary distinction. They were getting married, because they could, and it was right.
Yue smiled to herself in the dark. If she could offer him the same words again, she would. She would be there if he stumbled, she would be there to hold and be held, she would watch over him and care for him. To Yue Lao, it was natural to love him; the movements were so similar to a comrade in combat. A truly trusted friend who you knew would always watch your back, and so you could fight without ever worrying. That was what Jianyu had been to her for a long time, her best friend and comrade, and soon he would be her husband. "You're my only one, Yu. If you were all that I had, I would still be happy," she admitted, voice hazy, as if she was fighting sleep.
His embrace very nearly did chase all of those insecurities away. In fact, so long as he held her like that, she didn't have to think of or feel any of them. The fears scattered at his touch, and the light rose with the sound of his voice. "Tell it for me sometimes if I forget the words, okay? You're a better storyteller than I am," she asked him, stroking her hand along his arm.
She didn't need to be told to sleep twice. The exhaustion of fear and then relief washed over her in a wave, and she was comforted by this place where she slept: it smelled of Jianyu, and it felt like his space. A safe space. So very quietly, and lying still against him, Yue Lao began to drift off to sleep, picturing her fiance's face, his hands, his body, the way in which he would look at her when she had said something particularly ridiculous, or how he'd look when he wanted to hold her so tightly that she became part of him.
"I want to wake up to you every morning," Yue mumbled, through her sleep.
