His eyes caught the rising sunlight as he lifted his head, his expression unreadable. Tilting his head, he asked, "Can I share a story?"
Although his entire being balked at the idea of bringing up the past, he knew that to give her such a thing would be an equivalent exchange. Tisiphone seemed the type to more readily accept such a thing, and it might keep her from feeling like she had just reopened an old wound, laying everything bare in front of him. It only seemed right to do the same for her.

Despite herself, the femme was nervous about his reaction, or lack thereof. What did he think? Was she too defective to try to love? Ah. But what was it that he wanted to share? So caught up was she in her own inner turmoil, that she could not sense Hephaestus’s own unease. Well, there was only one way to find out what was going on in his mind. So, she nodded her consent.

Unlike her, he felt the need to get it all out at once. If he stopped, he might not finish.
"After my father died, I became alpha of the pack. It was smaller then, much smaller. The rebellion Thanatos created destroyed our happy family, and it took a long time for it to recover. But there were a few that remained with us, stayed loyal to Zeus. One of them was a female, close to my age. I don't remember her as a puppy, but back then I didn't care about such things. When we got older, though...
"Daeny was my other half," he added after a short pause, pain filling him. He still missed her... Still felt her absence quite keenly. "We were hunting one day, just the two of us. Even though she was heavy with pups, she refused to stay at the den. I was too caught up in my happiness to notice the scent of the rogue. A trespasser, I later found out he was a spy from Thanatos. He panicked when we stumbled upon him and attacked Daeny just as a storm came upon us."
His paws dug into the grass and soil, his gaze turning to the sun, now above the horizon. Anger and bitterness danced in his eyes.
"I killed him, tore him apart, but he'd already done the damage. Ripped her open from flank to flank as the storm raged. She might have lived....but the lightning seemed drawn to her, striking the ground closer and closer with every second. Finally, it struck her....
He sighed. Some wolves might have felt resentment, but when he thought about his strong, amazing son, he only felt happiness. "Ciirsyn survived. He was the only one. The lightning killed her, killed his unborn siblings, but empowered him."
"Thanatos took my brother, my father, my mate...I didn't think I'd ever be willing to care for anything again. Every time I did, something happened to them."

Her heart clenched in sympathy. Indeed, he knew her sorrow. The loss of loved ones. Betrayal. It amazed her that he had worked past all of that to become the alpha he was today. Even more, that he could be so open and accepting, now. But that was neither here nor there. Right now, there was a more personal matter that she needed clarified.
He said he had not thought that he would ever be willing to care again, not unlike herself. But the question remained: “And now?” Her eyes reflected her uncertainty, her sorrow and fear and pain and sadness, but most of all, they revealed a tiny glimmer of hope. Did he dare try to let her into his heart, as he was already in hers?

"And now...I think I am." He smiled, feeling a weight he hadn't noticed finally lifting from his heart. Though he hadn't realized it, he'd apparently still held that grief inside his heart. The alpha had never shared that story with anyone, not that much of it. He'd told his mother the bare minimum of details, but that had been it.
He felt....liberated, in a way.
"Will you be the someone I can care about again?"

Tisiphone could not decide whether she wanted to sag from relief or leap around like a pup. Instead, she rose from her haunches and approached him, and buried her face in his thick ruff, enjoying the intoxicating scent she was growing to love.
“I will be that someone,” she murmured, then looked up with a mock-glare. “It is only fair, since my heart is already far too invested in you.” She backed up and smiled, the first truly genuine smile she had given in a long time. “Yes. It is too late, now. I will not let you go so easily.”

He nuzzled her as she came to him, enjoying the feel of her so near. Her presence warmed his heart, and though she was acidic and demanding at times, he felt that he could get used to it. He'd just have to teach her to walk with him amongst the clouds.
