She had heard the massive thing before she saw the movement to her right. On instinct, Leifang jumped to the left, turning her body to face the large creature that pulled itself from a tree as if it was just an extension of nature. Her eyes slowly rose to his, absently twitching her right hand's finger, ready to summon her energy katana if need be. Thy head of the land? she thought blankly, still daunted by every part of this strange being. "Uh... the Lady who sent me here was Liliana, if that's what you are asking...?" the kakurenbo replied unceremoniously. She had no idea who was in charge of Wormwood Swamp. In any case, she just gave the only answer she knew.

 A cracking sound could be heard as the being's appearance changed into that of a normal man. Well, normal in a way. He still stood over Leifang, but now he didn't have his armor in the way. His strong face broke into a smile. "Tis good to see another from the green land. I suppose you're here over the recent disturbances?"

The sound of cracking almost made Leifang jump in surprise. She watched the figure cautiously until his figure changed in an instant; no longer a fully armored behemoth, a shirtless man stood before her. She found her gaze resting on his chest for a moment too long before Leifang snapped her eyes up to his own. Thankfully, the slight blush and the small smirk growing on her face were hidden behind her vulpine mask. His smile was even more attractive and welcomed. "Yes, that's what I've been told." She relaxed very slightly, but straightened her posture, not too ready to drop her guard at the first instance of friendly banter. "Is there anything you can tell me? I'm going in blind..."

"The group that has been rounding up villages and murdering them is called the Swords of Salvation," he said as he started to wind his way though the trees. "Their leader claims to be trying to purify Wormwood of taint but what he really does is kill innocents in cold blood. Whitewater village was taken last night, as the tracks back on the main trail showed." He gestured forward, not breaking stride over fallen trees and thick growth. "The villages taken at night are brought to Hyjon's Rest, a small town just outside their stronghold. If we could possibly take out a guard or two at key positions, we might be able to free the trapped villagers."

As the mysterious guy began walking, Leifang wondered if he was actually her guide or just a wanderer looking for entertainment. She frowned, but followed him anyways. "Swords of Salvation," she repeated softly, memorizing the name. The fox was surprised to find that the situation was that serious. A group of religious nutjobs murdering villagers to purify them? Did Liliana or her adviser understand what was going on here in Wormwood? Surely they wouldn't send someone without many abilities such as herself if the danger was this serious...
Stubbornly, she shook of the creeping feeling of dread that crawled up her spine. "Alright, so we're heading to Hyjon's Rest." She stumbled over a bit of rotting log and huffed in annoyance. Running around in a strange swamp without a sense of direction or any real idea of what she was diving into wasn't comforting to the kakurenbo, but what else was she to do? Turn tail and hide back in Ernya? "Where would the villagers go once we free them? Wouldn't both Hyjon's Rest and Whitewater Village be taken by the Swords of Salvation?" Her red eyes strained as she took in the forest around her. What other villages could be hidden among this twisted, confusing land?

"Just outside it, yes," the man said, stopping for Leifang to catch up. Without warning, he scooped her up and put her on his back. "We'll bring them north to Devil's Eye. I have a couple contacts at Triwinds who will help get the villagers farther north to Ernya." He started off again. "But first, we need a better idea for the layout of their stronghold. And since I'm kind of slow and noisy, that's why I sent Evvie a message to sent me someone small and quick to scout around." ((My next post will be in the Hyjon's Rest thread))

Leifang couldn't stop her squeak of surprise when she was scooped up and propped up onto the man's back. She instinctively wrapped her arms around his neck and clung so she wouldn't slip off. Quietly, she muttered a personal note to herself to study a map more closely next time she visited Evvie. At the mention of the unicorn, the kakurenbo tilted her head and considered what he said. "That's where I come in," she added, more to herself than in reply.
