So... she was seventeen Turns then? Interesting. Ouch to the four Turns of trying though. Perhaps this clutch she would be a bit more fortunate. "My family raises and cares for herdbeasts here in the Weyr," he explained. "So I was essentially Weyrborn in my own way. If Tereth hadn't been born then I'd have continued on with the family business myself."

Well, it's a good thing that was born then, the brown replied, partially amused. While he'd been addressing S'ren, he'd also allowed himself to be heard by Lena.

Mhm... he replied silently, resisting the urge to roll his eyes. "As far as Contingency plans go, what sort of things do you like to do? Any particular crafts that have caught your interest?" She could always start searching and experimenting, just in case.

"Oh, that's nice. You've family nearby then. Do you visit often? Any sibs?" Lena didn't think the questions were personal or anything, just a natural tangent to explore, at least briefly. Continuing on with the family business could mean he was the eldest, the natural heir. Or it could've meant simply he'd stick to what he knew. She could certainly see the appeal of that.

She had to laugh once more as Tereth had his say; still grateful the brown was willing to address her and equally amused at the dragon's amusement. "Yes, yes, we can't've let S'ren go off and raise herdbeasts. Whatever would the weyr have done without him all these Turns~?" She wasn't being entirely facetious; for all she knew, he'd likely been a great help with the Mystweed gathering and whatever else had been required of the riders of late. "Not to mention the lack of Tereth. My life would be greatly diminished without your presence~" At least for the last sevenday or two.

Lena shrugged. "That's the tricky part, I think. I've tried to lend a hand to get a feel for things when I can, and the only thing I'd say I'm really good at is swimming...but I've no desire to be in the fishercraft, nor to direct ships. Dolphineering...might hold a certain appeal, but it's nothing I could do here." Which almost immediately disqualified it in her eyes; Trine was home and even if she went to the Dolphin Hall at Malvren Weyr...well, it wasn't quite the same. "Not to mention the commitment level." Not that being a rider wasn't an equally great commitment, but to become one of them all she had to do was get Impressed. To become a Dolphineer...she might actually have to study. It posed a problem. "I'm very undecided, to say the least."

"I visit on occasion, yes, but they understand when I'm busy," he replied with a small smile. "And I have a few younger siblings, yes. They rather like to play on Tereth when we visit." It was a good thing he had such a good-natured dragon...

Speaking of his dragon though, it appeared that the brown had taken to speaking entirely in front of Lena now, and he did roll his eyes at her next comments. "Oi, we do our fair share of work around the Weyr," he protested. Though, yes, him not being around wouldn't have been a major loss...

That is not true, Tereth said to his rider alone, suddenly much more severe in his mood. Even Ruby let out a mild squawk at the unexpected change from the brown. Do not undervalue yourself, Mine. I chose you for a reason, and if you were not here, then neither would I be.

Right, he really needed to remember to guard such thoughts against his dragon's hearing. Sorry! Sorry. Simply an errant thought was all. Amidst their brief private conversation, S'ren had actually missed Lena's comment on Tereth. He was paying attention once more though by the time she was going over craft options. 'If not fishing or dophineering, have you perhaps experimented to see what else you might like aside from swimming?" he asked. "Cooking? Weaving? Metal working? Leather working? There are a lot of options out there."

So he was the eldest then. Dutiful firstborn and everything! "Any ambitions to follow in their elder brother's most successful footsteps, or are they content at home?" she asked. She had a halfsib or two kicking around, she was fairly sure, but what Flight-product didn't, really? If it wasn't your mother having another child, it was your dragonriding father off impregnating another woman. Not that Lena particularly cared; given her tendency to offer her own body in the pursuit of pleasure she wasn't entirely certain she wouldn't end up in those ranks eventually. That was an entirely different story though...

She hadn't meant to protest him doing his share of work; merely to tease. She couldn't hear the silent conversation that proceeded, but she did hear the squawk of the surprised tiny crimson flit. Oops, had she said something wrong then? Ah well...

"Running? Though it's a weyr, it's not like we lack for means of quick messages," Lena said wryly. "I'm not terribly patient either, so that rules out several options there. I don't believe there is a craft for 'slacking off' though, or else someone would've discovered it by now," she added cheerily. Not that she was really that lazy; she just preferred to do what she wanted, and that could shift from time to time. "Anything I find interesting I lack permanent passion for, for the most part. It's not one of my best traits." Flighty, check. Capricious, check. What did people without the chance to become dragonriders with those traits make of themselves in Holds and Halls?

"Well, Breyan wanted to stay with the beastcraft, so he never tried Standing and has just aged out now. Josen is interested, but he's been a bit torn... Of course, if he doesn't decide soon then he'll only end up with a few Turns to try himself. My sister Roeline plans to stand though; she just has to wait another Turn before she can." He was actually a bit surprised that Josen had waited this long and still seemed undecided. Then again, he'd always seemed rather squicked about the idea of Flights, so... perhaps not so surprising.

S'ren listened as she went over her further listed options. "No, not quite any crafts for slacking off," he agreed with a faint smile. "Of course, being a rider doesn't allow for much slacking off either; unless you get a green, blue, or black, in which case there is a smidgen more free time." Not that they were all overly busy right now, but once Thread came... Yeah.

She did feel as if weyrborn got both the best and worst of the candidacy world--they could stand the longest, and thus have the widest window of opportunity, but it always seemed like out-Weyr candidates made the most of the shorter window and typically Impressed faster. It probably wasn't actually true, it just felt that way, and anecdotal evidence always felt stronger than real facts, whatever they might be... "Hmm, sounds like Josen better figure out what he'd like. Though I suppose there really is nothing wrong with the whole 'advance in your craft, marry well, lots of babies' concept if that's what he ends up favoring." It just wasn't remotely what the weyr tended to encourage; S'ren's family was one of the few crafter families that were able to hold onto that view despite the overall climate of things, it seemed. And a younger sister who planned to stand? How cute~ "Oh? I'd like to meet Roeline, when she comes to the ranks." Chances were Lena might still be a candidate, so maybe she could keep an eye on her or something. It depended if Roeline took after S'ren (and thus would not need the eye-keeping-on) or if she was a more typical eleven-soon-to-be-twelve Turn old girl.

"How lucky those are my most likely possibilities~" Lena teased, grinning back. Though she was quite well aware Thread was going to change things; she'd seen the Threadscores the Timeriders'd brought back, and the frantic upscale in numbweed preparation and storage. But still... "Honestly though, I don't actually think I'm quite eligible to Impress gold. That still leaves silver or crimson I suppose, but they're quite rare, so I may be able to squeak by yet with a minimum of even draconic responsibility~" Besides, what "higher color" in their right mind would Impress her? Well. They'd probably have to be slackers too. It wasn't entirely unheard of...

Yes, by this point S'ren didn't really doubt that Josen would just continue on as he was, and it wasn't as if the family couldn't use more aid in raising the beasts. "I'll be sure to introduce you to Roeline next turn then," he answered with a smile. His sister would probably get along quite well with Lena, actually.

S'ren shook his head lightly when she claimed that it wasn't quite possible for her to Impress a gold. "You never know what color you will Impress, really. You might have more of a shot at it than you think." Not that she seemed to want said shot, but one never knew...

"I will look forward to it then~" Lena agreed. If nothing else, she did rather like children, so she supposed she could always work in the weyr's creche and foster a few...so long as she was able to keep them out of real trouble, she suspected that would work well enough for a fallback "craft."

But she had to grin all the wider at S'ren's assertion. "Well, true enough, I s'pose, but I don't think there's been a gold yet that's Impressed a woman who has an equal preference for men or women in her bed." She was hoping her frankness pulled another flush from the brownrider; it was always so amusing to see the men blush...

Please, he was a brownrider. He'd been involved in far more blush-worthy things than finding out a Candidate was attracted to both sexes. This was still a Weyr after all. "Ah, in that case then perhaps not a Gold after all," he agreed. "Still though, I suppose we will see what happens." Wasn't really much else they could do, really.
