This all looked so precise that he wondered if someone as young as Nimue could even perform whatever it was she was doing. Hell even he likely wouldn't have been able to do it. His eyes watched her closely as she painstakingly set the objects in the place, adjusting them here and there until she nodded. That must be the way they were meant to be. His ears flicked at her words. Stand back? What exactly was she going to do.
Giving a shrug Chaos took a few steps away before coming to a stop and turning to look at her. She closed her eyes and began to chant. He couldn't understand what she was saying but there was a certain passion behind her words, as if saying them strongly would force it all to work. His eyes danced between Nimue and the circle of items waiting to see what would happen.

She chanted and chanted. Saying the ancient words, words which most horses didn't even know anymore. It was a lost craft what she was doing, only a few horses still knew the magic and her mother was among those few. Between her mother and her mothers mentor Nimue was certain she too would be among the few who still wielded the craft. Near the end of the chant she began tossing her head and stomping her front hooves in rhythm. The final word she shouted and tossed her head to look up at the sky.
She waited, holding her breath. But nothing happened. It hadn't worked again. Lowering her head Nimue looked over at Chaos. She wanted to blame him but there was no way to know whether it was his fault or not. In anger she slammed her foot down on the dead frog it's innards squishing out onto the ground. "I can't work with you watching me!"

There was a few moments of tension as they both waited for it to happen. But nothing did and he could see the disappointment flash in her eyes as she looked towards him. Chaos snorted at her words. Oh so it was his fault somehow. He hadn't moved, hadn't spoken, hadn't done anything while she had chanted. He didn't want to interrupt her and now she was blaming him. "Typical female, blame the males when things go wrong." God he would much rather deal with his father or Carnivore than a damned female. Harem idea was now pushed out of his mind completely.
"I'll let you sulk by yourself then." Turning he began to walk off. Chaos stopped a short distance later and glanced back at her. "Just because you look normal doesn't mean you are incapable of doing things for the herd. I can see you are determined but things take time." Wait when did he become a philosophical horse? Ah no matter, with a shake of his head he trotted off. "Keep trying Nimue." He called out to her as he reached the trees.

"Typical always being in the way of females!" That was horribly childish of her, but she was frustrated and too young to think of a quicker response that didn't show her age. Nimue scoffed, she wasn't scoffing, how dare he think that. She watched him walk off but then he stopped and turned to face her again. His words...they got to her, she turned away for a moment.
His parting words made her pause but then that determination he had just mentioned struck her. "Chaos wait!" Nimue trotted after him until she caught up. "I want to try one more thing, but I need your help."

He had just reached the trees as Nimue called out. Damn, he had almost gotten away. Sighing Chaos turned around to face Nimue. "Done sulking already?" He said in a humorous tone, teasing her slightly. "Fine, but I can't spend my entire day being your experiment you know. I do have important things to do you know." Giving his head a shake Chaos started back into the meadow. "So what is it that you need me to do?" He hoped that he wouldn't regret his decision to help her out. Who knows what she could do to him if her spells actually worked properly.

Nimue smirked. Ha, she won again. Simple minded males, so easy to sway. Trotting back to the circle Nimue kicked away the squished frogs body. "Just stand here." She instructed him and then picked up one of the sticks. "Oh, and don't move." If he moved, it could be disastrous. She waited for him to get into place and then drew a line around him. "Don't say anything, I'll lose my concentration." Now how did this go again?

Just stand there. Simple enough. With a slight shrug he stood where she indicated. His eyes follower her as she circled around him, drawing a line with the stick. "Alright." Forget the fact that she told him not to talk, he wanted to make sure that she knew he was ready. Oh but he had to ask one more thing. "What are you going to do with me?" If this was a sacrifice then she could find someone else, this may not be the perfect life but he still had things he wanted to do before his time was up - if Hell horses could even die of course.

Tossing the stick aside she kicked him in the hind leg. "I said no talking." Had she not told him to not say anything. It's not like this spell was overly complicated, or dangerous, at least she didn't think so. Trotting over to the tree Nimue picked up a few herds and sprinkled them around Chaos. Next she trotted around him three times one way and then the other.
"Strength within, strength without, in your mind have no doubt. Spill the fire, rain down upon, be the one to hold on. Let the eyes not defy, For he will be my unseen spy."
Trotting in front of Chaos she kicked some dirt at his hooves to seal the spell and then looked up at him expectantly. "Do you feel any different?"

Chaos snorted but otherwise remained quiet. He tried to watch her while remaining still. When she began to chant he listened to her words. Wait, she was trying to make him her spy? Spy for what? He had to fight saying anything until it was all over with. Did he feel different? Well as a matter of fact he didn't. Should he tell her the truth or lie to her? Lying would certainly boost her confidence, temporarily, and then she would be crushed. He liked crushing others dreams, but Nimue would be useful to the herd and Thanos would probably kill him, if not Rowan certainly would.
"Not exactly...but I'm sure these things take time right."

Damn it! It didn't work. She was done for the day. At least until she consulted her mother or Rasputin about what she was doing wrong. There must be something, some small detail she was missing, a word said incorrectly. Witchcraft was complicated and it often took years to perfect, but she didn't have years, she probably didn't have months either. She needed to get this right and do so quickly. Her place in the herd depended on it. She knew that Thanos and Thorn didn't like normal horses and like it or not, she was normal, at least appearance wise. "You can go now. I'm done."

Ah there was that disappointment again. Part of him found it entertaining but the other part could sympathize with her. He knew the pressures of being normal among the Hell horses. It's why he generally avoided the others, that way he was never a disappointment. One could not disappoint if they didn't do anything that would upset the others. "Alright, got things to do anyways." He had a long hike to get the meeting spot that Carnivore picked and likely wouldn't get there on time if he didn't leave soon.
"Failure is a part of life, even your father has failed...and your mother. It can't be avoided." With a shrug he turned and trotted off, hopefully this time she wouldn't stop him.

Failure would not be a part of her life. Not for long at least. Nimue stood there watching him leave. She didn't need him anymore, he was just a distraction. What she needed to concentrate, practice and get this right. Trotting over to the circle Nimue began to collect her things, piling them up so she could start over again. "First purify the ground." She told herself as she picked the wing and waved it over the ground once more. This made her think of something. This wing was important to her, she would need it for almost every ritual so having it stuffed in this hollow tree wouldn't work. What she needed was to find a way to carry it with her all the time. That and the stone too. They were both needed in every ritual her mother had taught her so far and likely would continue to be even during the higher level ones.

Chaos came to a stop once he walked into the trees. He hald expected Nimue to be there when he turned around, but she had returned to work, or so it appeared. Good, she hadn't given up after her rituals not working twice. Perhaps she would prove him wrong and get things to work. Either way he couldn't stick around to watch. With a final glance at the foal between the trees Chaos turned once more and headed out. He had a lot of ground to cover and he was already running behind.

Maybe she could craft something to carry these objects with her. Leaves perhaps, and some vine. But there were so few large leaves here, and if they got wet they were surely fall apart. No whatever carried her supplies for her would need to be sturdy and protect the items inside. Much as she wanted to try her first ritual again Nimue decided that it would be better to attend to this manner first. Plus it would give her mind time to clear before trying again. Carefully she placed the herbs, sticks and other materials in the hollowed out trees along with the stone. The wing she would bring with her. Whatever she used to carry it would need to be big enough so that it didn't mangle the wing and render it useless.

Finding a suitable thing to carry her wing and stone in proved to be much more difficult than she had thought. She had found birch bark, but it was dry and any time she tried to shape it around the wing it would just break apart. There was an old turtle shell by a pond, but then how would she carry the turtle shell? Though Nimue told herself to return and get the shell later as it may come in handy in the future. Just when she had started to give up she came across a deer carcass that had been nearly striped clean by wolves. Nothing there to use. Until she saw a section of the hide that looked relatively in tact. Well that, with a length of vine, it would make a suitable container. Giving the hide a tug Nimue dislodged it from the carcass and then carefully chose two bones as well, these she knew would be used soon enough. Placing the bones and wing inside of the hide Nimue used her hooves to life the corners of the hide until she could grab the edges with her teeth.
With her makeshift bag gripped tightly within her teeth Nimue headed back to her quiet little area where she hoped to turn this into something more usable.
