Back when I was looking into non-GW games after the whole regional sales thing earlier this year, I was looking heavily into Infinity, because I loved the models - particularly the female ones, probably for the same reason what's-her-face dislikes em.
The models are a lot cleaner, to use the word that describes the feeling best, than WH40k models. And I like that.
The only thing I didn't like was that it wouldn't allow for a massive army, but that's also a blessing, because I don't particularly enjoy painting - and honestly, these models are much more interesting, probably because I've spent 10 years with the vast, vast, VAST majority of models I have being from GW.
The main reservation I have is the difficult process of starting a new game and learning a new set of rules, since I won't be able to get a demo game. And my opponent is used to WH40k. However, it would be a nice change.
I will definitely have to look into getting a pair of starter boxes - one for me, one for my opponent. Will I also have to get a commander-type unit for each force?
Edit: Just checked Infinity's website. Saw their recommendation for a starting army. I'll let my mom pick her faction if she wants to try it.

most of the factions indeed have a "leader" type models, from Achilles to William Wallace to Sun Tzu to Jeanne D'Arc...

Hello. I know the first edition of Infinity, but I do not play nowadays, I must say that I love it and I have a lot of figures. For those interested I post the link to the official website, where you can download the rules, gaming aids, and scenarios (Or at least in the Spanish version). Hm, I'm torn between the models of three different factions - ALEPH for the sexy fembots and high tech, Haqqislam for their uniforms - I don't know how to describe why they look good, though - and their fluff - yay for religious reform resulting in niceness! - and Nomads for furries.
The downsides of each include ALEPH's reliance on robots - though they are growing on me - Haqqislam's lack of heavily armored troops, and the Nomads' somewhat icky fluff - I get the impression that their ships are not nice places to live.
