"...Indeed," he murmured, shaking his head as he tried to consider all of this.
Of course, he'd known that they wouldn't be surviving for long without an alpha. The ghost of Danel and the long-absent Rummy could only do so much. The only reason they had survived so well for so long was because of their devotion to each other...to the Shadowclan.
But he had always expected someone to step up and take over. For Fallyn to fulfill his role, maybe. Or for one of the younger wolves to overthrow him and really seize power. In a way, taking Danel back seemed like a step backward. Firdaws was in no rush to find or silence the traitor anymore, not when it had caused so much hardship for the pack. Knowing that Danel would never rest until Rotiart was dead....it was almost better moving on without him.
Still. In his heart, he still ached for the alpha, the way he supposed everyone did. However much he wished it weren't so, he did want him to return. He just hoped he was sane when he did so. It was bad enough when Occidio had gone mad and disappeared -- gods knew what he was doing now.
Not that Firdaws himself was necessarily fully intact mentally....
"What do you require of me, then, Warmaster?"

Pleased that the Huntmaster would at least follow this course, whether or not he fully believed in it, Arkadios allowed some of his carefully concealed tension to dissipate. He would not have to regret his decision, after all. Let alone deal with the consequences.
“I had hoped that you would help me gauge the feelings of the pack on this matter,” he began. “And if not help smooth things over, then at least be ready when the time comes. Though it pains me, I know that not all of our brothers will be happy to see Danel return. I am not certain how foolish they may be.” Though the words were not spoken directly, the implications were clear enough. The pack might be thrown into an internal conflict.
“It would be best if we were organized and prepared, just in case.”

"I don't think there's any worry about being organized with you around," he said, lightly, and a ghost of his usual grin flickered across his maw. "But, well enough. I will speak with my hunters first. But perhaps we should wait for Xihuitl to return with an answer, before...getting anyone's hopes up."
He also wanted to know exactly what the situation was with the traitor before he opened that can of worms. If they had a plan, and could unite against him for a quick, clear battle, then he would do that willingly in order to reunite the pack. If they were heading out onto another snipe hunt that led to more wolves disappearing...well, then he wasn't so fond of that plan.

“Well enough,” he agreed, as he did not want such news spread around any earlier than necessary. It would not do to give any potential traitors warning. Regardless, he hoped that Xihuitl could find Danel soon and bring good tidings home. After all of those years of waiting, he was anxious to see his alpha. Even Arkadios, with his vast patience and rational mind, could grow impatient. And he was more than ready to see Danel return. Some part of him still wished that it was he who had gone after the god, but he knew he had chosen wisely. It was best this way, even if his emotions said differently.
But now was not the time for such thoughts.
“In any case, I thank you for your help in this matter. We will speak again when Xihuitl returns. Until then, we wait.” With that, the great, blue warrior rose and drifted off into the forest, melding with the shadows, invisible in the night.
