No no, I didn't mean the whole underground population thing. More towards the end with the Golden army example it's a mix of machines and magic.

Ah that, yeah... Maybe even have some Brownies pass off as- not trying to be rude here but- midgets as they work on machinery and what not? That's steampunk and "magic" working hand in hand. I can imagine a little hobgoblin now all dressed up in a vest and boots and googles over his head, as he spits and sneers at humans, mumbling curses while he goes repair whatever contraption there is heheh... cute~

If you can set up the world like that it is possible to work as long as the steampunk aspect prevails over the magic stuff. As I said supernatural types seems to go well with the Victorian aspect of steampunk. The rest goes over more into the fantasy than the sci-fi/sci-fy that steampunk presents.

To me magic (in the form of hocus pocus that doesn't have a scientific root) takes away from what steampunk means. I mean if someone was to throw a fairy at me dressed only in Victorian attire and goggles and throwing out magic through a wand I'd verbally slap them for presenting me with a poser type of steampunk. Brass and Goggles do not equal steampunk. It's not just looks it's a lifestyle.

Man I really feel the steampunk elitist coming out of me with this and I am far on the bottom of the totem poll when it comes to the SP community. Interest and appreciation but you won't see me dressed like them or going around making things. I don't have the money or skills.

Anyhow the thing is that Lili hasn't told us which races are in the list of 'creatures' so this leaves us to decide on our own and that's a little confusing since everyone's perception of what steampunk is may vary heavily. ...I have a strong urge to watch the Bioshock Infinite trailer again.

The goggles are for those heavy-duty engineers who have to work with sparks flying at their eyes, or if they're pilots, anything else they're just unnecessary. The hobgoblins, or "Brownies" as they're sometims called, are dexterious, and relish in hardwork so they fit in nicely, because they're more like laborers than "magical" if anything at all. And some fae's have a fear of cold iron, so that give's humans and technology an upper hand.
Hocus Pocus magic... well making it scifi... creating metal and intricate staffs or guns that can conduct electricity or harvest energy and blast them off as energy orbs and blow things up could work in a way no? Or creating dolls that can walk and talk with personalities of their own, like Rozen Maiden, that when you stop their gears or destroy the stone holding their soul, they die?

Bern, maybe it doesn't have to be fully SP but faeries with magic and whatnot casting spells fighting against industrious humans who are coming up with their new technologies. And yeah, but somethings will be harder to explain. Faeries don't always have wings, yet fly, how so? Maybe the faeries have technologies humans are just discovering but we just focus on more destructive types. Considering that there was war and whatnot, and I think it was also when England, and all the others were conquesting other countries, especially Africa and I think some Middle Eastern countries, and parts of Asia perhaps...so they would have been fighting against rebel troops as well, and thus focusing mainly on weaponry development.

Those things do already exist in the steampunk community, Telsa guns, harnessing electricity in a portable manner to power the guns. Automated dolls. And for some reason people have made goggles a stable of steampunk fashion to some degree though others have been able to pull it off without it.

Yes they are doing the Bioshock Infinite due out next year. And how is there magic in Bioshock? If you watch the gameplay rewatch it over and over again and watch it carefully for details and you'll notice that there are a lot of strange things going on there.

If you watch the new one then you see that what looks like 'tonics' have replaced the hypos. That seems to be a play on the old medicines of that age where people thought that eletroshock was the cure-all for all mental instabilities and chugging stuff like castor oil could cure simple ailments. But the thing is Bioshock explains it through science.

The thing with steampunk is looking back at a time and foreseeing a future with it. Going back just to go forwards, the effortless wave of the hand type of magic would be going back to go back even further to pull ahead just a tiny bit. As I said the Victorian times messed with the occult and supernatural you'll see more about ghosts, spirits, werewolves, and vampires, holding seances, and the like so they would be more gothic in the fantasy terms.

For the part above I hold supernatural and magic in two different categories.

I looked around to see what other arguments people had on magic in the realm of steampunk. I think one person said it in a way that reflects how I feel about it best. Magic/strong fantasy in a Victorian Steampunk setting doesn't really fit well it's magic (hocus pocus type) in a world of advancing technology and industry, it's old and behind. But steampunk in a more fantasy based setting works better because in a setting like that there is more freedom.

Basically I'm trying to point out the major focus on the Victorian part of this Victorian Steampunk RP. If it were just fantasy steampunk that would be something else.

And the first two Bioshocks along with anything you saw in Suckerpunch wasn't Steampunk that's Dieselpunk.

Who here has read the artamis fowl series?

I'm tempted to play a human of mine named Zaldin. He's an absent minded professor type (gets into his work, forgets to eat, or listen). He wears a top hat and suit, and has a pet gecko named Victor. He also has an ox named Farfetnugen.

I wish that Lil had been a bit more specific. I sort of feel like she just threw it out at us.

Anyhow for the profile since there is no skeleton. I'd say do the basic.

Gaia Name
Character name
Race (again I wish Lili had been more specific in terms of creatures)
Age
Appearance description (she doesn't want pics, that's one thing that was specific)
Bio

I have a read like half of one of the books in the series of Artemis Fowle and was just thinking about it, but yeah fearies and technology. I was in sixth grade at the time and I had to take a reading class, don't know why since my readin and writing skills soar much higher than average.

My character(s), well there's two but my main one, will be a ranking officer, maybe a Lieutenant or Captain. But kinda taking it from Hanatuskihime, they have a contract with a faerie as they have her heart in them, and will have to give it back sooner or later, and the character is pretty defiant of that fearie.

for those who havent read the first book i shall summarize some of it.
artemis fowl is a boy genius whos father has gone missing so he takes over his fathers work and deals in the underground. it is then that he comes across the existance of fairies and starts hunting them down. when he comes across the a way to get the book of the faries he does so without help he then becomes the number one most wanted on the faires list and they have tech that far surpass that of what we have now and thus we think it magic things go bad one of the fairies gets caught by artamis and he ransoms her for gold. well the faires do so while under a time freeze tech and before it had a chance to go away, they bio nuke the house, killing any living creature in there. well there wass a way to escape it and artemis and his servents and accaplises in crime escape it thus does the end of the book conclude.

Okay I know I'm going to be viewed as bitchy for this but first Jay, please watch your grammar and capitalize letters when need be, especially when it's at the beginning of a sentence.

Secondly please explain why it is that you had to explain the book to us.
