Trees on the plains were uncommon, hence they were the first recognition points any member of the pride learned. It was just up to Selene to remember how this particular stand stood in relation to home. Uchanjaa followed her lead and also settled in the shade - not too close, but out of the hot sun.
He could talk to her, educate her about this particular location, it's importance and significance, but he doubted she'd want that. He could also remind her that she should be home soon, even if her parents knew he was with her.
But the older lion said none of these things. He'd figured out already that she wouldn't take kindly to him "interfering" more than he already had to. So, he decided to make a policy of silence, until she asked him for help.

Sitting quietly in the shade of the tree, Selene thought about the path that had brought her to where she was. She almost regretted not bringing one of her brothers, they were fun sometimes. It'd be more fun than this now. She was ready to just be home now but she was also too stubborn to ask for help.
So they were stuck sitting in the shade for several more minutes while Selene looked around from the trees to every little thing around them. Finally, inspiration struck and she thought she might know the right way to go- maybe not the most direct way but it would take her towards something more familiar. She would be happy to zig-zag her way home if she could just say she had found it without help. That had to be her game now or she would not be having any fun at all!
With a short glance to Uchanjaa, she stood back up and started off again. Soon, maybe, she would find somewhere close enough she could send him off and then she'd be home.

It was some time before Selene was ready to make her next move. But Uchanjaa was okay with waiting. He had the feeling he was going to be doing a very great deal of it in the coming months.
As the cub rose, her assigned Guard did as well. Had she remembered, or had she just gotten bored? She wasn't telling but from looking at her face, he rather thought she might have recognized something.
That was promising, at least.

The stubborn silence continued the whole way home. The path was still an interesting weave around the lands but it became more predictable and controlled the closer they got to home, it didn't take long to realize she knew where she was going again. Her pace was much faster, too, once they were on the right track. She was set to go home, it would get rid of Uchanjaa.
She never said another word until she was near enough to home she was sure he would let her go. He could almost watch her go all the way to the den from here. Or so she thought, she wasn't as tall as him.
"I am going home, you can stop following me now," she said loudly, barely glancing back at him as she said it but taking off at a jog once she was done. She was happy to be home.

"As you wish," was the only soft response to the cub's parting words, which could have been blown away by the wind for all the the girl appeared to hear him.
That being said, Uchanjaa ventured no closer, but he did stay and watch until he was certain Selene was going home. She might go directly now, but he had a feeling that when she got older, the lioness might say one thing and do another, in hopes of losing him.
By the God, he certainly hoped it never got to the point when he'd have to watch her while she slept too! That would be the worst of this awkward situation, make no mistake.
Still, it was time and past for him to go home and consider making cubs of his own with his beloved. That would take his mind off of the Heiress for a time, at least.
