Was this male simply trying to show off and impress her? Or impress any pretty thing that happened to come along? "You did this all yourself then?" She asked, looking at the plants and the coral. It was at least mildly noteworthy that he had done this. It was a really large area, and the location was good.
She folded her arms as she looked around. Food and shelter, protection, everything seemed in order. "And just how big is your family now?" He was concerned with it becoming too large, so it must be sizable, right?

His eyes moved to the sandy pit where he was already imagining his older children digging around and playing in. From there to the moderate sized 'play rock' that he had spent months dragging into view of his grotto. It had dozens of large tunnels that looked like they had been chewed out by eels. He figured it would be a perfect place for the tiny babies to play tag and peek a boo in...or to hide in if ever there were any predators to reveal themselves. Relon looked to Royal as she would question him about his family, and he found himself looking to the main grotto below.
"None. There is only myself now...but...eventually my home will be perfect..." His side fins had drooped for a moment, then they flared up as he turned a smile upon Royal. "Then I'll find myself some mates, and we will have children. My family will grow large and I'll have many people to share this all with!"

She folded her arms and stared at him as he seemed to droop. So he had no one just yet? He kept all this in the hopes of having a large family. It was both sweet and sad. "Sounds lonely." She said as she looked around. "I come from a rather lively home. There are currently 27 of us, counting myself. We've had some new arrivals, and they're quite boisterous. It's why I found your home alluring. It's peaceful here." She admitted. Slowly, Royal brought a hand up and cupped her chin in thought. "Hmm..."

Lovely...she thought it was lovely. That mere simply compliment erased the sadness that had loomed over him for a moment. Relon made a gesture towards the sand pit and the playing rock. "I made places for my younger and older children to play. All within sight of the sunning stones and the grottos. I...I even planted snacks in the grottos, and made a nursery as well as a small kelp garden there.I could show you!" He offered with a small degree of eagerness to his voice. He looked at Royal expectantly and was rather encouraged when he heard her make a sound of thought.
"Your family sounds wonderful...though when mine is large I intend on it remaining peaceful. I want everyone to be happy always."

She had to wonder if it was possible for a place to always be peaceful. Children would fight and bicker, and someone will get jealous or accuse someone else of something. But it was a nice dream.
"I suppose they can be wonderful. Recently, we've had a couple new males join our family, so there has been too much tension, it gives me a headache." She slowly drifted around Relon and looked at him. "You seem lonely, and I need a quiet place away from everyone as they settle in. Can I come here and see you more?" Since it was his territory, she felt it best to ask. And perhaps she'd get to know this interesting, family-focused nymph. She only knew one male who was interested in family, not just offspring, and that was her cousin. This beta was quite the puzzle.

It seemed it was now his turn to be eyed? Relon flared his tail and fins out for the female to inspect and he held his head up a bit. He knew he was a good looking mer. His hair was a very solid color that reminded him of flowers. His tail was not nicked and he was missing no scales. He was healthy and strong, he was surely a good specimen! "Males tend to fight a lot when they get together, that is why only young males will be allowed to stay here...or girl boys. I do not want a lot of fighting or disturbing of the peace. When my sons become men they will have to go and find their own territory...though hopefully still near enough for their mothers to visit."
Perhaps he was just a bit too naive in thinking such a perfect family balance could be obtained...but it was a goal to strive for. Relon's head gave a small nod when Royal would ask her question. "Of course. I would love to have you visit. I can show you the weird human thing I dug up next time!"

She couldn't help it. When Relon fanned his fins, she giggled. If he thought that good looks were enough to impress her, he had another thing coming! "I see you've thought about this quite a bit. Hope that none of your sons challenge you for right of the territory then. Or, any of your daughters for that matter." She swam a little faster, moving away slightly.
"You find human treasures? I think I'd like to see that. Next time."

"My son's will love and respect me, so they won't challenge me...but if they do I'll beat their little behinds but good!" Relon declared with an aggressive fanning of his side fins. His lips remained turned upwards with a rather amused smile. "Don't be silly. None of my daughters would do that! But yes, I would love to show you my weird human things at a later time...maybe tomorrow?" Okay, maybe that was a bit sooner then she may have been intending?

Royal tapped a finger against her chin in thought. Tomorrow? Well, things would probably still be rather noisy tomorrow. She did like her quiet, and meeting this mer had been amusing- the good kind of amusing, not like the amusement back home.
"Tomorrow then. I'll meet you near the sunning rocks again?"

"I shall be waiting for you!" Relon declared with eagerness. She would come back and he would certainly be waiting! Having a female to try and impress felt good. It lifted the dreary feeling of sadness that had clung to him as of late. Perhaps she could determine what he needed here. What more could he work on to ensure his future mates would not just vanish. Smiling with pride, Relon twisted about in the water and began to swim back down to his territory. he needed to catch up on some of his gardening !!
