Perhaps it was merciful that Glory was completely unaware of Conk's presence. Then again, maybe it just made things worse. If she had known, she might have at least tried for some dignity.
Instead, what she discovered was that while the crab had seemed extremely interesting when he was on Rainbow, he was extremely creepy while he was on her. He tickled her fur and her pincers seemed likely to tear her apart, and she had a deep primal fear that he was some kind of mutant giant spider.
Oh god, oh god, get it off.
Panicking, and then panicking because she was panicking, she floundered backward, slipped fell in the shallows, and resurfaced halfway caked in mud.
All of this took up the space of less than thirty seconds, but it was enough to bring her somewhat to her senses. The panic had gone, anyway. It was a crab. A stupid little crab. It wouldn't hurt her, right? It couldn't.
It had made her look really, really dumb though. Thank god it was only Little Rainbow here. Right?

Thankfully for them both, Snips seemed to have gotten the idea: when Glory resurfaced with her new look, the crab had let go and been carried away by her throes to who knew where - the mud had covered his escape up as easily as an octopus's ink jet.
"He didn't hurt you, r-right?" Rainbow asked hastily, ears pressed backwards as if it had been all his fault. "Snips doesn't mean anything, honest, he's just bold and stuff, I-I tried to teach him commands so I could stop stuff like this, but he won't listen, and -" It was just spilling out, word after word like his mind had no dam to hold the river back. Rainbow probably thought the lengthier his apology, the more sincere it was. His eyes kept darting towards the spot his crab had been clinging, as if in fear blood would soon be tainting the clear water.
It took all of Conk's power not to snicker . . . loudly. So he did softly. This was just too perfect - should he crash his little retarded brother's date now, or wait for something worse to come along? Conk'd known that stupid crab was bad news and a clear sign of Lil' Rainbow's true idiocy that he kept it around.
Wasn't as bad as his siblings' even weirder need to keep dead animals around, but he blamed his mother. It was always his mom's fault anyway, so.

"N-no," she said, shaking herself so firmly she thought she would fall in the mud again. "I'm okay. He just startled me, is all. I thought he was a spider or something. Not that I'm scared of spiders."
She smiled. Poor Rainbow! He looked so worried. None of this was going the way she wanted it to. She leaned forward and nudged him on the cheek, encouragingly. "I hope I didn't hurt him, actually. I'm...not totally sure where he went."

"O-Okay . . ." Rainbow still looked a little anxious nonetheless, be it from future botherings from his now loose pet, or from how close Glory was to his face, or the fact that ohmygoshtheytouchedcheeks - he just didn't know what to do, poor soul. The only woman in his life really was his mother; even his sisters were removed, one being locked in the peril of a stronger twin, one unable to wrench herself away from what she conceived to be her own bad luck aura. Despite having the largest family to date in the pack, Rainbow usually felt quite lonely.
So he locked up when Glory drew near, but found that it was . . . nice attention. She'd scouted him out, asked how he was, even joined him in the river when she didn't have to. That was almost as much as Gull did, if not with more attentiveness than her even. Rainbow found himself stumbling over what to say after such an awkward pause when he heard it.
"Sneeeeeerk."
That awful, awful sound that made him immediately recoil away from Glory's face.
Apparently now was when Conk decided to break his cover, his characteristic snort carrying through like a terrible bird's caw as he pawed over so casually as he pleased. "Awwww ickle Rainbow Fart's trying to get himself a girlfriend?" he sneered as he approached. "Stupid s'it is to think you'd ever get one, you got the right idea: her lot's so desperate they'll probably hump the first thing that lets 'em."

Glory went through a complicated series of emotional reactions when Conquering Hero revealed himself. She wheeled around in surprise, jerking away from Rainbow so quickly it seemed that she had been burned. Oh god someone saw! Oh god, it was Conk. Oh, god, she was covered in mud.
Thoughts buzzed in her head like angry hornets and for a moment she couldn't single out any single thought at all. Then the things that the maned wolf said started to sink in, and before she knew it she was snarling, stalking stiff-legged toward him, hackles raised.
"You can shut your fat ugly mouth!" She said, glaring. "How long have you been standing there, anyway? Who's more pathetic -- the wolf standing here talking to a girl, or the one hiding like a stupid ugly creep!"
Why was her heart beating so fast.

Conk, as usual, just let the insults slide over him like the greasy hair gel he needed to look styling'; if only he knew what that substance was and how to invent it! "Like I could ignore you screaming like a girl," he drawled, looking pleased that Glory was quick to take his bait. "So friggen loud, seriously. You'd wake up the bears from hibernation."
B-Bears? Rainbow's face immediately paled, scars tingling.
His brother grinned even more at the expected (and wanted) response. "Yeah, you heard me. Bears. You remember what happened last time, eh? Had to save your sorry a**."
"M-Mommy says we shouldn't curse -"
"Yeah? 'Mommy' wouldn't know what was good for you if it carved the answer in her face and made her bleed." Content that his stupid sibling would shut up (and indeed, Lil' Rainbow's lips were drawn so tight they looked ready to split), Conk turned back to Glory with a lazily raised brow. "So. Watcha been doing with Rainbow Piss that was so friggen fun you had to be alone?"

Oh, that was it. That was it.
"None of your damn business, that's what!" Head and tail held high, she wheeled around to where Rainbow stood and, on a whim, feeling an aching restlessness overtaking her heart, she ran her tongue along his cheek in an agonizingly slow I-am-totally-showing-off type of kiss.
"Come on, Rainbow. I think this part of the river has been polluted."
Hah. Take that.

It stung. That was the first thought that Rainbow thought, that Glory's lick agitated his still healing scars. That was one of the only thoughts he could conjure up in that time, actually.
Glory did get a result, however: a momentary twitch of his muzzle that revealed a tooth before it wrinkled into an agitated expression. "You're sick," Conk growled. "Lick him all you friggen' want, he's probably got all sorts of nasty stuff on those burns. I hope your tongue burns and itches."
Or, close enough: Glory might have gotten some of the poultice taste Rainbow had rubbed on his wounds earlier on her tongue because of her brash action.
In either case, Rainbow took a moment to respond, and it was with surprising steadiness despite the pre-speaking gulp. "Let's go, yeah." Shifting his gaze to Glory's paws, he would wait for her to move before following after.

Oh good lord that tasted awful. Yuck. But she couldn't very well spit it out now, so she ran her tongue over the roof of her mouth over and over, trying to rub the taste off. It didn't work very well. She fought to keep her expression neutral.
Doing a mental 'la la la la', she threw her nose up in the air and marched up the bank, dripping mud and completely ignoring Conk. Or, more or less; her ear kept flicking back toward him, much to her annoyance.
