Kam had just enough sense left about himself to laugh as she grew flustered and dropped his unnecessarily large keyring to the ground. In fact, he was still laughing as she managed to pick them up and began to fumble through them. It was a contagious sound, filling him and bellowing outward - that nonsensical hysteria that came with being far too drunk, where everything was funny.

The sound of his door opening sobered him and he swayed towards it, gripping the side of the door with a hand to stabilize himself. Suddenly, he knew where he was - home. That meant his bed (couch) was within reach! He swayed through the living room, using various objects as support and knocking over anything left out in the open. He ignored them and plopped comfortably onto his couch, then slid his eyes up to the woman still chattering.

If he knew where he was, he seemed to have forgotten who he was with.

"I always know what ta do with a pretty lady," he smirked just as playfully back at her, then tried his best to lean casually into the couch with one arm stretched across the top. It was an attempt at beckoning, but given the way he slouched immediately, it wasn't that effective. " 'Sides, I don't have ta do it standin' up."

If Kam's laughter was contagious, Vanessa couldn't catch it. She was amused, certainly, but aware of the fact that he was laughing at her. She knew that it wasn't meant to be cruel, and even offered him a smile. It was half-hearted, because she was suddenly sick with butterflies, and did not quite reach her eyes. The colour in her cheeks transformed from a dull pink into a dark crimson. She was glowing, a little, from the heat in her face when Kam collapsed onto his couch and invited her to join him.

Dammit.

Vanessa swallowed, and went to collect an empty (also, clean) glass from one of the kitchen cupboards. It was a moment or two before she had enough control of her voice to answer him soundly.

"I'm not sure you'd be able to handle this one," she countered finally, voice only a little bit shaky, and filled the glass with water from the tap. Her mind was full of the first time she'd met Gehenna, and the sizeable dent she'd kicked into the nearby bathroom stall.

Vulcan was a lot stronger than Vanessa. But they were the same woman.

"Kam," Vanessa hesitated, and then sat down beside him. Closer than was probably wise, but far enough to be considered respectable. She could not help herself, when she leaned back into his arm, and inclined her head in his direction. "Do you want to kiss me?"

This was the first time he'd ever called her pretty.

Vanessa wondered if it was true, or if he was letting the whiskey speak for him. Possibly, it was both. She searched his dark eyes with her bright ones, and had no idea what she was looking for.

"You'd be surprised what I can do, babe." He called it out to her as she was rummaging around in the kitchen, letting his head tilt back for a moment and his eyes drift closed. It felt like time slowed down, so much so that when she finally plopped back onto the couch next to him he started from the surprise. His eyes flashed open and looked panic for a moment, until his head turned sideways and his dark eyes locked with her bright ones.

At first, he was reminded of Vulcan, and a small smirk spread over his lips. Do you want to kiss me? The words echoed in his head. His opposite hand rose from his lap and reached out, very slowly, to brush a finger along her jawline. His whole body shifted then. He pulled his head up from the back of the couch and leaned in, not close enough to touch her lips but close enough to feel her breath against his. The hand near her face splayed, letting the broad palm cup her cheek instead.

Then a small, slight frown formed and for a moment he surfaced in his dark eyes. There was a swirl of emotions there, lingering for her to see - regret, confusion, impatience. Then he shifted again, leaning back into the couch with a groan and bringing the hand from her face up to rub at his scrunched brows instead.

Time stopped.

Kam's hand lit a fire where it touched Vanessa's skin. It spread through and through her. That pretty face lit up like a torch, and her pulse quickened. Vanessa didn't dare move, terrified that anything she said or did would break the spell that he seemed to have fallen under.

Oh.

Vanessa's heart beat so fast that she thought it might get away from her.

His lips hovered a breath away from hers. There was almost no distance left to close between them. Vanessa tensed, hands flexing uncertainly where they rested on her thighs. Any moment, he was going to kiss her and then she was going to grab him by the hair and make sure that he just kept on kissing her.

But those lips failed hers, and the palm against her cheek was suddenly taunting.

The frown that took over his expression then crushed her expectations, as well as her excitement. Vanessa didn't understand all of the emotions that swirled in his eyes, though they were mirrored in her own. Regret. Confusion. Impatience. Desire. She swore inwardly, heart aching, and blamed herself for provoking him.

She should have known better.

"Here," her voice was hoarse. Embarrassed, blushing, Vanessa pressed the glass of water delicately into the hand that wasn't currently preoccupied with his brow. "Drink this."

One shut eye peeped open to look down at the glass of water she offered him. He closed his large hand around it and brought it up to his lips without argue. As he took large gulps of the refreshing liquid the crease in his brows faded and his free hand dropped back to his lap. Such a simple thing to distract him so easily.

He finished the glass in what seemed like seconds, then calmly held it back out to her. The incident had sobered him up enough that he wasn't likely to forget who she was again but he still didn't trust his feet to carry him to the kitchen - or even to a table close enough to set the glass on. His only comfort for the night was that he was probably going to be blacked out by morning and this would all be some fuzzy, distorted dream in the back of his head.

There were a few pros to drowning his sorrows.

"I need ta sleep," he mumbled, almost unintelligible, beneath his breath. As much as he was trying to clear the rest of the awkward situation, there was truth to his words. His eyes were half-lidded and he was beginning to slump to the side, falling into the mass of pillows at the end of the couch.

"Yes," Vanessa's voice was soft. She was careful not to touch Kam, when she took that freshly emptied glass from his outstretched hand, but did not bother to hide the way that she watched him. There was an inexplicable fondness, and a concerned warmth, in her eyes. "You should sleep."

Wondering idly how much of their encounter he would have forgotten by the morning, Vanessa stood up from the couch, stooped over Kam, and thoughtfully removed his shoes. She was quiet while she worked; exquisitely aware of his closeness, and the intimacy of the care that she was showing him, but resigned to the reality of the situation.

Whatever attraction Kam might have felt for her, and Vanessa was certain that there was something there, he was determined to deny her. To deny them both.

She was haunted by the feel of his hand where it had caressed her cheek, and horribly ashamed of herself for coming on to somebody as drunk and as vulnerable as Kam so obviously was. Vanessa was still pink in the face as she paced silently about the room, preparing things for the morning.

She closed the blinds and shut off all the lights.

She refilled that glass of water, and placed it precariously on the floor beside the couch, within reach, alongside a large (and empty) bucket. Just in case.

Lastly, Vanessa tugged an old afghan blanket off the back of the couch and draped it carefully over Kam's sleeping frame.

And then she left.
