Damn. If they could put even the faintest of faces to the crime, have any lead . . . But life wasn't always crisp and to the point with its answers. Nothing else laid here save death.
"We must leave this place. There is nothing left for us," Chou told the prince, and then turned his head towards where the ladies had gone and gave a short, loud bark. The faster they put this land behind them, the better.

Kai shivered all over, but he managed to hold himself together enough to pull away from the stack of corpses. "We can't leave them like this," he said, finally, and his eyes darted about for a solution. Normally, wolves of Kapu'Moana were buried at sea, their bodies dropped from the highest cliff point to be taken away by the tide...but there were far too many here to do that. They would need to burn them.
But how in the hell was he supposed to find any fire?
He turned to Chou, about to ask if he knew any way to create fire, but was distracted by a sudden sound. He turned toward the cliff face, curious, but too numb to be afraid, and his brow furrowed. Kamiya's sob caught in her throat. She'd heard something. Eyes suddenly narrowing with murderous intent, she stalked past Marion and moved like a striking cobra for the clump of brush that rested at the foot of the cliff. She snarled, a snarl of murderous intent. Moments later, she emerged with a golden wolf, dragging him backwards by his scruff; he was covered in blood, but white vine-like filigree was evident along his pelt. She forced him down and glared at him, all teeth bared, ears flat to her skull. "You," she said, in a hoarse whisper.  He lay back in her grasp, limp and listless, his eyes rolling a bit wildly in his head. He looked resigned to face death. Then again, considering what he had seen, death would be a blessing. Kai jerked up, brow furrowed. "Wait -- no. That's...Roshan?" He crept closer to them, although kept a hesitant distance. "Kamiya, let him up. You know he couldn't have possibly done this."
Roshan rolled his eyes toward his prince and smiled a bitter ghost of a smile. "It makes no difference now. Let her kill me. They're...everyone's..." a shudder passed over him. "There are ghosts here now."

Boy, talk about a free show...Marion draggled after Kamiya, quite curious, but still too dazed by a bout of nihilism to go into the situation full-throttle. And anyway, this s**t was high drama enough without her shaking it about like a bug in a jar. Best just to watch!

Kamiya let out a disgusted snort, but Kai disregarded her. He lowered himself to a low crouch, creeping up toward Roshan. He nudged him encouragingly, giving him a soft smile. "Roshan, old friend," he said. "You must have been through a terrible ordeal. I don't want to make it worse. But, please. Tell me what has happened here."
Roshan shook his head so rapidly it looked as though it had come loose from his shoulders. "I -- I'm so sorry, my king," he said, trembling as he stared down at his paws. He shivered all over. After everything that had happened, this small kindness was too much, and a miserable keening whine caught in his throat, overwhelming him beyond speech.
My king? That caught Kai off guard, taking his breath away. Of course. He was the king. Hell. He was the whole damn pack. He and these two brightly-colored wolves standing before him. It was staggering. Mind-boggling. Terrifying.
"...Never mind," he said, trying to keep it together, trying to be brave. "We...it's been a very long day, for everyone. Let's...let's get away from here, and rest for awhile, and we can convene later on."
