There was definitively something Bjorn didn't know about his impromptu passenger, and it was probably best kept that way. Sure, Ashley was cute, and small. She certainly would look helpless enough if anyone decided to mess with her. Through with only a thought she could become something different, something more.

Something that would make anyone regret trying to mess with her, certainly.

So no, Ashley had nothing to fear of strangers or the dark. The dark was her home, in fact.

"Sure." And so she did - turn there, straight ahead, nothing too complicated, really - until they were there.

At least most Chinese buffets had large parking lots on the expectation a lot of customers during their lunch and dinner rushes. There was a sidewalk that circled the some of the building on the front and sides, so he toted the cart to one side where there were fewer cares since it was further from the entry doors. Carefully parked against the wall, he unhitched the guide poles and ropes from the harness. After that, he waited for her to hop off, picked up two of the weights and stuck them, one each, behind the cart wheels.

There was a tiny basket on the underside of the cart that had a latching cage door, and in it was his messenger bag. There was really no reason to go into a restaurant with a shirt see-through with sweat, so he took his harness off, took the shirt off, and fished a Nike Pro-core out from his bag to peel on. There was also a stick of antiperspirant, and with that he was at least more close to human again and presentable for a table.

The old shirt went into a wadded, plastic grocery bag first, tied, then back into the messenger bag whatever other magical things he kept in there.

She wasn't a talkative one, despite her boldness to just start conversation. How to approach it then? "So...you go to Meadowview, but don't think much of it other than it moves you along...you don't like cars, you do like rollerblades, and you have a job. But what is it that is Ashley's passion? Are you on any of the sports teams? Or music? Will I see you at events between our schools?"

Ashley hopped off once he was 'parked', landing on her feet with ease, and waited for Bjorn to be done with everything he wanted to do before going inside, through she kept in movement all the time. Her movements, however, didn't have an impatient vibe to them - it was just that she didn't like being immobile, really.

She had to admit the whole cage and messenger bag idea was brilliant, through.

"I do girly things, you know... Shopping." She didn't expect him to be into shopping, through she couldn't help but wonder how much of a pain in the a** clothes-shopping had to be for him. "Oh, and I play soccer ! They don't let us play against the boys team, so we never play against Hillsworth directly." From her tone of voice, she seemed certain that she would have been more than able to take them. "The Crystal girls are sissies. The St-Mags girls are a little more fun to play with." Some of them played dirty. Ashley loved it.

"Not even for scrimmage?" A lot of gym classes had ended up segregated on gender because the guys were all assholes, trying to prove power instead of skill and accuracy, trying to one-up each other. He remembered being bored most of the time in gym until he'd gotten an exemption based on the level of fitness work he was doing for his 'sport' and extracurricular competitions.

There probably would be no such luck at Hillworth. "Shopping...but for what? Just the act of it? Clothes? Electronics? Books? Do you go with friends? "

He decided to tease, to see if he could get her to roll her eyes or be fed up with a blatantly boy-ish comment. "Friends such as other stunning girls from Meadowview that I could meet?"

It wasn't really to judge her character, though it would let him know if she took him dead seriously, he just wanted to liven up conversation. Joking around did a lot for that.

"Nope, it's all separated by gender for the most part, beside like... fencing." That was the only thing she can recall on top of her head, anyway. "And since four of the high schools are boarding schools separated by gender, it does limitate things a bit."

Really, she'd love to take the boys on sometimes. But that would bruise their egos forever, wouldn't it ? Ha !

"Clothes, for the most part." Ashley loved clothes. She owned enough clothes for three girls her age, but Bjorn didn't need to know that.

"What, this ain't plenty of stunning for you ?" She batted her eyelashes playfully, but didn't keep her mock-affront up for long - she started laughing only a few seconds later. "Oh, many. All taller than me, even, so they won't need stilts or a barrel to reach !" Woe. She wasn't completely sure if he was joking or not, but if he wasn't... Hey, she knew a girl or two into big boys.

He nodded sagely as they were led to a table and asked for their drink orders. He got the iced tea to limit the bad calories from sugar to just the preservatives of the buffet food. Naturally, he ordered the buffet.

As they were walking up to the plates, he gave her a surreptitious once over, "Well, I may take you up on it sometime. But I make it a point never to date anyone that cannot take me in a fair fight."

He winked after saying it. It was all pleasant joking. "You? Any prospects? Someone would have to have much energy to keep up with you, it looks."

She ordered the buffet as well, through she went for juice rather than his iced tea. She followed along as he went for the plate, kind of like a poodle trailing a great dane. Some people couldn't help but look, but Ashley didn't care.

Hey, their problem, not hers.

"Well now you're limiting the opportunities a bit." She laughed again. Any of her friends taking him in a fair fight ? Yeah. That wasn't happening. Even if she knew he was joking, that was just too funny of a mental image to imagine.

"It's been a while, really..." She shrugged, not looking too bothered. "Last boyfriend and I split when we both kind of... lost interest, still see him every now and then." She'd dated a model ! Not many girls could say that, but... Yeah.

"I figure when im ready, i'll meet someone. No use trying to rush it."

"That is a good policy to be patient," he agreed. "Good to hear you can keep an acquaintance from relationship. I've never had someone, so I can't say if I am so mature yet."

He spent so much time training that it was hard enough to find a lot of time for friends, let alone anything more serious. People were jealous of time, and maybe it was rightly so that if someone was very important, they deserved more attention that a few hours stolen each week.

The buffet was exciting. Rows on rows of chicken bits slathered and stir fried in different sauces with various sauces. He especially liked the ones with chicken, beef, AND shrimp all in one dish. Not that he was sticking to one dish.

His first visit to the buffet involved two heaped plates as well as a bowl of wonton soup. And two bowls of rice-one fried, one steamed. He waited patiently for her to have a seat with food and be prepared to eat before diving into his own bounty.

At a breathing point after the soup he ventured, "Does eating out get boring if you work at a diner? Or just certain types of food? "

"It's not always that easy... And it's not really all up to one person." Ha - as if she was the perfect person to give relationship advice. That was a little laughable, but Bjorn didn't need to know that. "Me and him, we were... both ready to let go ? So it didn't hurt. It was just over and that was it. When one person's not ready... It gets messy and there's little you can do if the other person's not willing to make it easy."

Pain could make people do things they had never expected to be able to do.

Her portions was very modest compared to his, a bowl of wonton soup to start with, and it only made her glad she'd thought of coming here. While it would have been fun to bring him where she worked... It would have ended up costing him a lot.

"Nah, it's not so bad... I just notice it more when waitresses do a shitty job now." She laughed. "I've always cooked, so it doesn't bother me... I kind of hope they'll let me cook sometime, but I don't think that happens. The cook is a little... territorial of his sacred kitchen."

"Ah, a hobby of it? Or would you like to chef professionally? My mother is a chef. She's working on finding a suitable place to renovate, then she'll probably open a restaurant. Her cooking earned a Michelin Star. I think she hopes to own a restaurant of her own that gets two. Three is probably too hard, they are too rare, but we encourage each other to strive."

"Do you know the red book guide? They make a green book for travel, too. Maybe it is only in Europe? I never heard anyone use it at home before. I haven't seen anyone with one here. "

"But they are useful. The best places to eat the best food all described in easy summary. " He was glad that a general topic, that of food and preparation, had come up as a common ground. making friends took a little relating to the other person, and it was finally a small glimpse into the girl's life. Something to ask her about. "Have you been a waitress long? Maybe they require some experience before you can transfer to the kitchen."

"Im not sure yet but... maybe. I don't see myself doing much of anything else, to be honest. A desk job would bore me to death." Well, nothing else she could tell him, at least, through she knew she would be expected to at least go to Sovereign Heights after she graduated. Her mother was talking about it all the time now, with her senior year starting in the fall and all.

She had to keep appearances intact, at least. It was the best way to avoid suspicion. If she gave her parents any reason to look into what she was doing... They'd notice things.

"Oh, wow, she must be really good then." Ashley sounded impressed indeed. Earning awards was never easy, but in the food industry it was even harder, it seemed. After all, everyone had different tastes. "I'd love to drop by her restaurant once she opens !"

Red book ? "No, I don't think I've heard about that..." She paused for a bite. "That sounds like a good idea, through... And not very long. Just since school ended. Im probably gonna keep it when school starts back up again, but less hours."

Only if it didn't collide with her tasks in the negaverse. Hopefully if she asked for the bare minimum hours it wouldn't...

"You'd be most welcome to drop by. She'll want to be hearing all the people I meet about the city while I settle in. School means I won't be living at home, but we'll be keeping in touch. I could get you a free meal or two once she finds a place and opens. "

" 'Meeting people is making connections', " he quoted from a men's business and life magazine. He set his fork down, rummaged briefly through his bag and took out his planner. There was a note pad and pen in the front of it, and he quickly scribbled down his own cell number, name, and both of his mother's. "And connections are important."

He lifted his hand, palm facing her in peace, as he offered over the paper, "Don't feel like you have to call ever, but here are both our numbers. She'd like someone who knows the local restaurants. You get around on your own wheels, seem very hip. You would know the high traffic places where a store might do well, and what the city already has too much of. She'd be glad for the information, and would love someone to try out recipes on. As for me? Just if you need a friend, or someone to move a car for you, yes?"

He laughed, a strong and clear sound, at the last of his comments. "We'll both be in school, but I'm always glad to help someone I know."

"You have great drive, to still hope to keep hours after school. I'm sure you can do it." He was more than sure, actually considering how she seemed to never stay still for long. He didn't think that even a full day of classes and homework would be enough to run the energy out of this girl.

She accepted the paper carefully, folding it neatly and sliding it into the pocket of her jeans. "Oh, I can do that. I'll just have to double-check to make sure." Certainly didn't want to lead his mother astray ! "Near Meadowview is also a good area to start out in. A lot of the kids sneak out to go eat at the nearby restaurants rather than stay at the cafeteria. It's a little harder to sneak out of the boarding schools, or so I heard."

Some days... well, she couldn't blame them. Some of the things on the cafeteria menu were nasty.

"Can always use someone to move a car." She said with a laugh of her own. She also couldn't refuse free food. Who could refuse free food ?

"Im gonna do my best, anyway. Pocket money never hurts... Hm." She pulled a pen out of her pocket, and improvised the notebook part with one of the napkins, writing out her name and cell number. "Likewise, if you need anything, call me ? If I don't answer, im either at school or at work."
PostPosted: Thu Aug 25, 2011 5:28 pm

He happily folded the napkin and placed it into the planner in the address book. He could copy it over later onto the more durable paper. "An easy sympathy to share. I will have to see if there are many faires this autumn, to make pocket money myself. "

Putting away the planner, he picked up the receipt left by the waitress on the sly. He'd happily pay for the whole dinner, and hoped that she wouldn't contest it. He got a refill of his drink, and another heaped plate of the fried lemon-sugar dough balls, offering her one for dessert if she wanted. "Take some if you like, I don't need the whole plate, and it saves you a trip."

He adored smörgåsbord.

It was getting late though, and after finishing and paying, he would probably have to say goodbye to the new ....friend? Acquaintance? Either way, he liked her. A lot of energy in a tight little package - nothing wasted, nothing wanting. "Are there times you are usually free for friends when it would be good to call? It is in the air, yes, since your school hours would be different. I would guess evening? Though maybe you have to be home early for school in the morning. Who knows. I'll try to call you some weekend. Maybe we can race, you on your wheels and I can run with my weights."

He knew she was far faster, no doubt, wheels were like that. But it would be fun either way.

Ashley had been done eating awhile ago, but hadn't seemed to mind waiting, through she accepted the offered ball.

It was, indeed, getting late, through she didn't seem to mind. Her parents probably thought she'd decided to hang out with a friend after work which, for once, actually was true. "I get out of school at around 4:30.... So around that time is good ? I don't know what my work schedule will look like yet, so maybe weekends would be a better idea till I do."

The one ball met it's fate, and she reached out for another. "I don't really have to be home early, so that's fine. As long as im home by midnight, my parents don't really care much." Of course - she was a senior. Well, would be. it would be ridiculous if she still had a strict bedtime. "I don't know about how Hillsworth works, through, but I can go meet you up there if it's more convinent ? And i'll totally race you !"

Hell, racing him would be awesome. It wasn't so much about the easy victory than the fun, indeed. "Through you'll probably be able to keep going a whole lot longer than me !" Lugging all that weight about had to do wonders for one's endurance, really.

It gave her an idea... But no, not now, not right here and then. But perhaps, soon, a poor unsuspecting lieutenant would find himself lugging weights about...
