The only reason Shani hesitated in agreeing was because of the way Makkai hesitated in giving his instructions- his insecurity was becoming clearer and she realized he probably wouldn't be better off pushed too far starting out. He didn't have to be the type to take action immediately, that was why they lived in a pride- they would always have help.
"OK," she said, "I'll wait for you to get into position."
She smiled at him and then looked back to the hares, waiting as he headed for their little dens. She crouched down and began to move in slowly, closing the gap between her and their prey but waiting for Makkai to be ready.

Ready as he was ever going to be, Makkai had himself positioned between the hare, who lucky for the lions hadn't caught on to what was going to happen to them, and the opening to their den. He as still as possible, an astronomical feet for him, and waited, once grandma scared them his way, he was sure he'd catch them and they'd have a tasty snack and he would be praised, as spoiled as he was, the praise was something he was after often.
Standing a little too close to the opening to the den, Makkai wasn't able to realize that perhaps there would be a sentry or two posted at the opening of the warren's subdomain..and that, that sentry might lash out and bit him. A hare charged with all of its might and swung around hard with it's back feet hitting Makkai square in the bottom.
With a shriek of pain and surprise Makkai whipped around only fast enough to see a hare's bottom retreating back into the hole it charged from.

Shani was just about to take off after the hares when Makkai's shriek made her stumble to a confused stop-- and the hares they intended to chase scatter. She looked around once before looking to Makki, trying to figure out what happened. Something obviously startled him.
With a small sigh, she jogged over to meet him near the hare's den.
"What happened?"

He looked at his grandmother a mixture of shame and anger spread across his face, "A hare just attacked me!" The prey they were supposed to be catching suddenly came to mind and he looked around frantically for them, they were long gone by now.
"It, jumped right out of one of the holes and got me, they're probably all hunkered down by now, sorry Grandma." He bowed his head thinking this would have never happened to Demeter or Anya. Makkai wanted to call it a day, even though they'd just started, and also wanted to beg Shani never to tell his mother.

He was obviously upset and sensitive about the whole thing but Shani could help but chuckle at the poor boy as he explained what happened and apologized. Maybe he wouldn't see the funny side of it now, but he would someday. Maybe when he was teaching his own cubs- or grandcubs- to hunt.
"Spunky little guys living around here, aren't they?" she commented, glancing down at the ground to where the hares were certainly waiting for the pair of them to depart, "Don't be sorry. Did you learn anything from this?"

He was confused by her laughing, it wasn't funny!
Makkai had half a mind to try and dig his way into their little cozy home and show them a what for, but he supposed that would be futile. "Spunky," he snorted. Trying to come up with a good answer to her question he figgitted and turned the thought over in his mind.
"Pay more attention to my surroundings, I should've known better than be so close to a hole..and that hares are willing to fight back?" Makkai thought perhaps his first half of the answer to that question was the more reasonable of the two, but the last one also rang true.

Shani nodded to each lesson he suggested.
"All true," she said, biting back another chuckle at the last one, "Did you want to try again somewhere else? We didn't get very far this time."
She would have been happy to keep going and going but his fidgeting made her uncertain of how ready to go he was. It wouldn't help to be too pushy- not just yet.

"No...maybe tomorrow we can start again?" His rump really smarted, he wasn't about to say that aloud, that would be something to illicit laughter from his grandmother.
"Just, don't tell mom? Can we keep this between us? I can just tell mom that today was successful, in other ways than us killing something? I learned a lot!" Especially about how everyone had their advantages and disadvantages.

"OK," she agreed, "You've earned a break."
She beamed at him, knowing he just needed some more practice- they would have to work their way outward, get to where the less familiar prey would be, where they might not take their chances playing around like they did today.
"I won't tell," she said with a nod, "Why don't you walk with me back home?"

He nodded to her and started walking toward Shani's den, the fidget-y young was back to his ways, and there was a small spring in his step, there was no way Grandma would give up on him!
Makkai lived with his mother, but not for long, he was determined that once he learned to hunt properly he'd have his own den. And be out from under Demeter's watchful eye.
"I'll learn in no time, with you!"
