Takashi finished his fish before Aiken had. She might have started eating first, but he could inhale food in a very silent and neat fashion. Most didn't see him eat, they just looked away for a moment and the food was gone!

He was very careful picking up Aiken a second time, not wanted to disturb her full belly of food. A rumble of thunder sounded overhead. Takashi tilted back his head to look at the sky. Hm, stormy. He looked around to see if there was any available shelter.

None. So he'd have to wander to find some. Best hurry, this storm looked like it was moving quickly. The tree tops far overhead were already shaking with a high wind.

Aiken allowed herself to be lifted, content when she was on his back. Her tail curled around her body as best as she could, head on the males shoulders. She closed her eyes to nap, however, the thunder woke her prematurely as she glanced upwards as well. A storm? Her nose sniffed the air, tail twitching at the tip once. She loved storms. Though, not if they got caught in one, that sounded not fun.

She rested her head on his shoulder once more, content with where she was on his broad back. That is, until rain started to fall. Her head glanced up, covering her headphones that she had retrieved as the rain pelted down viciously and the wind picked up.

A loud crash caused Aiken to flinch, eyes widening when she heard a crack. The last thing she saw was a tree falling straight for the two.

Takashi head the crack the same time Aiken did, head whipping around. He had to make a decision, and he had perhaps three seconds to do it...

Silently apologzing to Aiken, Takashi ducked underneath her and dealt her a strong blow to knock her out of the way of the tree then leaping back himself. She'd probably get a bruise there, but since the alternative would have been her getting squished as she fell from his shoulders while he tried leaping out of the way...

Before the tree had even properly settled, a new roaring sound filled Takashi's ears. He looked up in time to see a wall of water coming at him, carrying all manner of debris. He had time for a single thought before the water swept him up in his path.

All he could think about was Aiken, in the same water as him but so far away.

Aiken let out a soft grunt as she was knocked off, rolling and colliding into a rock when she landed. She managed to sit up just in time to see the tree settle into the ground, head turning to spot a wave of water rushing towards her. A log rammed into her chest, giving her something to cling onto and gasp for air with as it shoved her down the channel of water.

The water flooded out eventually into a bank where Aiken could crawl onto the ground, limping very slightly. She collapsed onto her stomach, panting for air. Takashi had saved her, but now they were apart. Was he okay? Was he safe? Did he harm himself? Aiken lifted herself, chastising herself mentally for taking that small break while Takashi could be injured, and limping off to try and find him.

Takashi had ended up with a similar fate, grabbing hold of whatever he could and fighting to stay above the water. His fight ended when he was slammed into a large tree. Claws digging deep in the bark, he pulled himself out of the water and hung on for all he was worth.

It was hours before the water receeded, now deceptively calm. Limbs aching from clinging to that tree for so long, Takashi lowered himself back into the shallower water and swam for firm ground. Already the sun was starting to sink below the horizon. Rather than lay down to rest, Takashi started walking.

There was no way he could stop, not until he knew what happened to Aiken. It was either he found her, or he collasped when his body could no longer hold itself up. He had a lot of experience eating and drinking while on the go, and had remarkable stamina when he had something driving him...

Night fell, and Takashi was still searching.

She fell, limbs giving away. When Aiken stood she nearly fell again. She felt weak, sick, and alone. Where was Takashi? Her mouth trembled slightly, for now she had a reason to speak. She never did because there wasn't a reason to, but now? He couldn't smell her in this rain! He couldn't see her! Wait... it was so loud... so windy, he wouldn't be able to hear her, either. Her voice locked in her throat, hair sticking to her face as she looked about.

She couldn't find him. She had lost him. He was gone. He was somewhere out... out there. Aiken had failed Takashi, and her heart clenched. Emotion ran over her face for once, unable to stop it as she let out a loud wail. Aiken, she was making a sound no one would think would leave her throat. The sound was the tearing of her heart as she realize, truly realized Takashi could be dead. All because she was on his back.

The wail became a loud scream, drowned by the rain. It was all her emotions poured into one. Dead. Death never bothered her, everything died. When a friend died she merely blinked and accepted the fact, because she would die too. So why? Why was this hurting? Why was she screaming? Why was she feeling helpless.

Eventually she was silent, curled into a ball as the rain hit her. She didn't care anymore. If she got sick it was fine. She didn't care. Not anymore. If Takashi was dead, then she could deal with a minor cold.

Takashi was still walking. He was soaked to the bone and probably freezing cold to the touch. Most certainly he had bruises, some that felt like they went all the way down to the bone. So he was bleeding, but it was all inside his skin. If he cared to stop and assess his own situation he's probably find he was in terrible shape.

He couldn't stop though, he couldn't. He'd let Aiken down, lost her. Nothing would make it right until he found her again. He refused to think of her as dead though, and clung to that denial with every fiber of his being.

Perhaps it was this hope that allowed him to hear that thin wail in the distance. Rain was still coming down, debris was still settling, and the occasional rumble of thunder still tolled through the air. What he heard could have been nothing, but the instant he head it Takashi made a beeline for that sound. All he would lose was time, and the gain could be so much more.

((We can either do another post each, where Aiken is bummed and Takashi is still looking, if we wanna try for more filler. Or we can go to the next action phase. I figure Aiken can hear something, react either in hope or indifference, and it turns out to be a predator of some kind. Then Takashi will come in and we go to the beatdown posts XD))

(( Hmm... filler. We do need to reach 6 pages anyway. ))

Aiken opened one eye, wondering if she should look for Takashi anymore. She felt strained in her chest, probably from screaming so loud. She wanted to give up. Takashi couldn't be alive, and, if he was he had escaped. He was strong and strong. Wait, if he was so strong why did she fear his death? Because all she remembered was being thrown to the side as the tree fell. It could have crushed him! This hurt, she wasn't one to feel so emotional and yet it made her want to cry.

No.

If she cried she'd be giving in. She had spent her life showing a numb face as she felt on the inside. She hid things. She was logical. She thought with facts. Emotions she felt, but they never determined how she acted. This... she was falling apart.

As she closed her eyes she tried to block everything out. The fact Takashi was probably dead. The fact she was lost. The fact that things were falling left and right of her. Everything needed to stop.

.....
Why was she so sad?

Takashi paused, looking around. The keening had vanished, launching fear into his heart. For some reason that he could have never explained, even if he had been completely fluent, he knew that was Aiken. What if the reason the sound had vanished was because....

No, he couldn't finish the thought. Movements a little frantic now, Takashi rushed forward in the direction he'd last heard the sound. He was tired though, and definetly hurt. He stumbled over things he normally wouldn't have, and struggled more than he should have. He noticed none of this though, in his single-minded determination to find Aiken.

Aiken had almost fallen asleep in the dark, stormy night. Almost. Then a sound alerted her. Aiken jerked her head upwards. In seconds she heard the sound again. Takashi? Her body rose, moving to the sound. It was in a bush, or rather in a scramble of bushes that had melded together. Him? Was he alive? She stopped caring for danger, wanting to see if he was there.

The sound stopped, and she leapt back as a large beast that vanished before she could notice what it was. All she knew was that it wasn't Takashi. She turned around, trying to find the creature. It was to late, because when she turned around the thing had lunged. Her bent her legs, ready and hoping she could dodge in time.

Takashi had been steady moving at fast pace. He had picked up a scent, not so much a trail but a single scent, and was adament that he was on the right path. A sense of urgency that he almost never felt overtook him, as though it was critical that he be with Aiken right now, that these seconds all mattered in ways that he didn't understand but were all important.

That feeling of dread stole over Takashi, and even though he should have been exhausted he broke into a run.

The wind shifted and brought two smells with it, both faint. The first was Aiken. The second was a foreign smell, predator, possibly a giant cat. There was no blood yet, but... Takashi made himself run faster.

He plowed through the trees in time to see a dot of white against the darkness of the forest, and of the creature stalking the dot. Takashih willed himself to move faster. He watched as the creature, definetly feline by it's movements, stop and crouch, ready to pounce. Takashi felt like he was flying rather than running. Distantly he felt his lungs burn as they tried to pull in more air, his muscles only working through pure adrenaline, but he pushed that aside as a distraction and kept going. The sound of his large paws hitting the ground was muffled by debris, and that was perhaps why his next move worked.

Still half a dozen feet from the cat he launched himself at it right as it made to pounce. The two collided in midair, the blow from Takashi sending them crashing sideways and into the brush. The normally silent male was now snarling, fearsome sounding noises that were doublely shocking coming from such a normally placid temper.

Her eyes widened as a mass slammed into the creature, hair flying as the breeze ran through the terrain. The creatures fell into the bush, followed by a low, fierce growl. Aiken didn't move, didn't know what the creatures were, and took a step back. What if they were fighting over who ate her first? Her heart pounded as the un-logical side of her tried to make her go to the bush, to at least see what had attacked the cat.

She was a logical being, so why was she so worried? Was it possibly.... She approached the bush, bewildered when she saw familiar black and red fur, mind going blank. She backed away, however her paws stopped her.

Takashi. She had found him. Takashi. And he had risked his life for her. How could she help? The cat was shaking itself free from its confusion, glaring straight at Takashi. Aiken leapt into the bush, deciding that if he was going to help her then she could help him. A low growl escaped her, a sound that was slightly wavery because of lack of use.

(( You can control the cat. ))

At this point Takashi was past all sembelence of reason. His world has narrowed down to himself and this cat. His mind registered the tawny fur and slightly tufted ears, and after this fight was over he would remember it was a cougar, or mountain lion, that had attacked. But right now that didn't matter.

The cat snarled furiously at it's missed attempt, long tail swishing behind as it narrowed it's golden eyes to glare at the foxes. It was about average-sized for it's kind, slightly bigger than the foxes in heigh and definetly longer than them in the body. This gave it an advantage of weight and muscle.

Takashi didn't know if the cat was so hungry that it would continue to attack despite being outnumbered, but the fact that it hadn't turn and ran by now made him sure it would at least require more persuasion before it would leave. Snarling fiercly he ran forward to meet the cat, rearing up slightly on his back legs and batting with his claws, snowy white teeth exposed by a curled lip and darting past his paws to n** at the cat.

It didn't take well to being attacked, and let out a snarl of it's own. It had longer, heavier paws than Takashi and tried to swipe at the male. Takashi's own bulk saved him from being knocked over, but he acquired a set of scratches down his side left side and neck. Now he wasn't just bleeding on the inside...

Now most vixens would cry out the others name, though Aiken didn't. It would only serve to either distract him or be background noise. Instead, what she did was more productive. She grabbed a branch that was at the side of the cat, pulling as she walked backwards until she could no longer pull. This was the best tactic for her, seeing as the cat was focused on Takashi it wasn't noticing her, and she was to small to do any real damage.

So, when she couldn't move backwards enough without breaking it, she released it from her teeth, hoping, perhaps even praying that it would hit the cat. If the cat ducked then Aiken would be useless again, until she found something else to throw or roll downwards.

Takashi had lost sight of Aiken, blinding by bloodlust from the battle and doing his best in general to keep the cat away from her. His first hint that she'd decided to take an interest in the battle when when a massive force slammed into the creature from behind, knocking it, and Takashi by proxy, down to the ground.

Both creatures scrambled frantically to get their feet underneath them, the cat with much hissing and snarling while Takashi opted for a growl so deep it was impossible to hear.

Now each favored their left side, Takashi from the scratches he'd taken earlier and the cat from the massive force the branch had imparted. Had Takashi been in perfect condition before the fight began he might have had the upper hand, for the cat moved as though some of the bones in it's shoulder had been cracked. As it was though Takashi was beginning to flag, adrenaline and bloodlust aside.

His tail was completely puffed out, a subconscious response to make himself bigger. The cat was clearly trying to do the same, but next to all the fluff of a male Modifox it was a pathetic attempt. They stared each other in the eyes and this time the cat made the first move, poucing at Takashi.

((I can have them end the battle with my next post, or drag it out another couple posts.))
