His returned kiss came as a little surprise to her, although in retrospect it shouldn't have. Where her kiss had meant to be a gentle reassurance, the wordless exposure subtle and completely open to interpretation, he had read it as the most powerful of admissions, answering in the only way he could, the only way she would ever want him to. He answered it vehemently, demanding in a way that forced her to feel how much he needed her, with every fiber of his being, as if it were the last chance he would ever get, the very last kiss he would ever receive. His kiss was bruising, their lips crushed together almost painfully, but she leaned into it the moment his lips touched hers, for once meeting the passion he exuded, her fingers sliding into his hair to keep him close. The moment would be fleeting -- as soon as he pulled away, it would die with the loss of intimate contact -- but for that moment she gave him everything he wanted from her, everything she wanted to tell him but never could.

I love you. I have always loved you.

She, too, took a long, deep breath as he finally pulled away, her eyes still closed as she slowly started to relax. As predicted, the tension began to wash away as soon as that connection was gone, but surprisingly the need was still there, a subtle ache in her chest that was normally so suppressed. It took several minutes longer than it normally would have to regain control of herself, and by the time she opened her eyes she could feel him already starting to lift her, his arms locking beneath her hips to lift her like the dancer he was and she never had been. Automatically her hands found his shoulders, resting there to support herself in a way she knew he didn't need, and she tilted her head down to watch him as he stepped back, sliding her thighs to each side of his hips as he sat down, folding them to seat herself in his lap. Smooth, gentle fingertips traced random patterns down over his shoulder blades, just idly feeling muscles she knew by heart, had traced with her own lips once upon a time... Once upon a time... had it really only been a few weeks? She already felt like she was re-learning him, despite having slept pressed against his back less than a month ago. In that short time, she'd almost lost him, not once, but twice.

The thought brought with it a fear a thousand times that with which any shadow could invoke.

Petra was so caught in her reverie, she almost missed when he began to speak again, his voice surprisingly soft for the loud, hearty laughter type she was used to hearing from him. It gave her reason to pause, listening, and it was because of this focus that her eyebrows furrowed slightly where she would have forced her expression smooth before. It was clear from her expression what she was thinking, not even having to say it for him to pick up on her train of thought, skepticism lacing her long, even stare. As he placed her on the bed and crouched down on the floor on his knees in front of her, the look only became more obvious. Despite the sweetness in his face, reason made hers into what could have easily been equated to an open-mouthed stare, a clear 'Are you crazy?' They were in the middle of an island, training to become cold blooded killers. Who will would they be, when they left this island? They might not live past tomorrow!

It was that last one that made her stop, the realization slowly becoming apparent as the skeptical look turned into one of mild grief, half regretting the decision again to be a hunter. She could lose him at any moment. He could die at any time, and she would have to live without him as if he had never been. And she found she couldn't bear the thought of not having had him at all.

Slipping her hands out of his own, she took the right one in her palm, turning it over to rest over hers. It was large and heavy -- she'd never really thought about it before, how much bigger it was, even though he'd held her hand so many times, squeezing it when he teased her. Using the other hand, she untied one of the little ribbons from her hair, twirling it a few times around the base of his finger and tying it loosely, like a little blue ring. "There isn't any need," she murmured, dropping her eyes as if embarrassed, like she was sharing some secret, "I'm already yours."

The words lingered for a second as she knotted the ribbon -- twice, so it would never fall off -- only after she was completely finished did she look up, lacing his fingers with her own.

"I will."

Robert was pretty sure this was the best idea he'd ever had. Thusly, although he looked ridiculously excited for it, there was a part of him that seriously doubted she would go for it. Something in her expression, that are you crazy look, confirmed to him that she would need some coercion when it came down to it. He was already trying to figure out all of the ways he could convince her to buckle down and give in, when a ribbon slid across his finger.

He looked down, pulling his hand away to hold it up in front of him. It was a strangely feminine gesture, as he stared in wonder at his newly ringed hand, and his lips parted to form a soft 'oh' shape.

I will.

His shocked gaze turned to look at her, and he blinked several times, before his un-ringed hand pulled away and jammed into his ear. He shook a finger within his ear, violently, before staring at her again.

Did she. Was she. Was that a yes?

"Holy s**t." He breathed out in a long exhale, while his mouth simultaneously broke out into the biggest, face splitting grin he'd ever worn in his life. It faltered for a second as his hand dropped to his stomach and his face blanched.

"Ohhh, man. I think I'm gonna hurl."

Robert was the most romantic man in the world.

Instead of throwing up all over his fiancee - holy s**t, he thought again to himself as the word seeped through his thoughts so easily - he started fumbling frantically all over his body. He was looking for something, anything - why couldn't he be wearing ribbons?! Oh, that's because he was ALL MAN BABY. But he needed something, anything..

He groaned in frustration, finding nothing usable, and ran his fingers through his hair. He tugged angrily at it, but his eyes blinked wide as they froze in place. Then, without much warning, his fingers wrapped around a very thin strand of his hair, no more than ten or twelve of them - and he ********." He shook his head and rubbed the spot where he'd just pulled hair from, before twirling the ones he'd gotten. He twirled and twirled, until they made a thinner, ropelike string of black. Then he took Petra's hand, giggled like an idiot, and tied it around her ring finger.

It looked terrible.

He covered her hand with his own, and his laughter bubbled through every word. "I'll get you a real ring. As soon as I can. I promise."

It didn't take long for Petra's expression to flatten again. Really, when she was around Robert, it was almost always flat, on the bring of rolling her eyes at his antics, because he was always doing something that made her (and pretty much everyone else) just want to stare at him. Admittedly, some of the time it was with a dreamy, far-off look that was her way of saying 'take me now,' but most of the time? Most of the time it was with the skepticism she had been feeling not a few moments previous, when he had slid off the bed to kneel in front of her, looking up at her so earnestly and saying the words which no one in their right mind would have been thinking after everything they had been through. Are you crazy?

To which the answer she responded to herself with was always 'Yes.'

Her indignant look quickly turned to an almost offended one as the realization of her words finally sank into his thick skull, her own realization that he didn't think she'd actually say yes starting to dawn on her with that comical little o-shaped thing he was doing with his mouth. Nevermind the fact that she almost didn't say yes. Furrowing her eyebrows a little in a skeptical look, she watched him shove his finger into his ear, leaning back a bit as if he might elbow her with the violent motion. Of course, she did so doubly at his announcement that he might lose his non-existent lunch, her eyebrows lifting a little in surprise at that, although her expression was no less flat.

... she'd just said she'd marry... a total idiot.

She knew as soon as he started fumbling around that he was doing one of two things -- trying to find something to use as a ring, or trying to get his pants off. And for a second, watching him pat himself down, she really considered whether it was the latter, almost moving to help him. It was not until he ran his fingers in his hair that she realized he was actually trying to think of something to reciprocate with, and she tilted her head slightly, mildly curious. What was he going to do? He didn't have any ribbons (she... almost hoped...) and unless he was about to rip his shirt (... she didn't have any problem with that...) he'd be hard pressed to find anything. Lifting her eyebrows, she gave him a bewildered as he paused, realizing just a hair too late what he was doing, wincing a bit as he promptly pulled out a few strands of hair. And before she knew it, she had her ring.

Yep. Complete idiot.

Sighing a little under her breath, Petra leaned forward to kiss his forehead before leaning back a little, resting her weight on one palm behind her on the mattress. "I would love to see you find one on this island," she replied with a surprisingly light tone, the corners of her lips curling a bit in a small smile, leaning back to lie down on her new bed.

Challenge accepted.

Robert's face took on a determined facade. "Oh, you bet I'm going to find one." He growled, moving to climb up on the bed once she'd flopped against it. After all, lying down in front of him wasn't the best way to keep his thoughts clean. He flopped down, practically crushing her, and grinned.

"Guess what?" He asked, looking as happy as a tail-wagging puppy. He leaned in, and kissed her nose. "We're gonna get married."

His stomach churned again, and he rolled off of her, though his arms had already snaked around her enough to pull her to her side and keep her against him. His expression was still dopey, but now it was laced with an obvious raw passion. "You and me, sunshine." He rested his head against her forehead, and his grin fell. "I promise. It's you, and me. I love you with every damn fiber of my being." He bent his head in, and his kisses pressed against her neck. They felt hungry, and desperate, which was no surprise. He hadn't been close to her in - he immediately shut out the attempt to think up how much time it had been.

It didn't matter how long. He'd wait forever for her.

But he was only too happy to not wait any longer.
