"Oh, honey, I don't know about that." It was laughing, though, his eyebrows raised as he shot a look down at her. Ever's thoughts went to an array of books the girl wouldn't enjoy or understand: his most recent conquests, full of suggestive comments and the word 'sausage', mixed in with Satre and an Italian text book.
He cleared his throat, eyes dancing with amusement as he looked up again. Instead of going around, he carefully vaulted himself up over the desk, and succeeded in knocking a few pens and sheets of paper over the edge to clatter to the floor. He winced, guilty, as he picked them up. "Harry Potter gets a little scary toward the end, is all."

Ainsley would probably never know why Ever was laughing, and that was probably a good thing, but she'd always assumed laughing was a good sign. Laughing meant she'd done something right and they were in a good mood! It pleased her to be able to put Ever in such a mood so she didn't bother to even question it and took his word about it. The thought of people lying to her was not even a possibility so once he'd confirmed it it was now reality.
She was surprised to say the least when Ever flew over the desk, followed by the sound of several things being knocked over and hitting the desk with a few clinks, her hands clinging to the books against her chest just a little more tightly as it had startled her. She'd waited for him to pick the items he knocked over and then leaned up to the desk, placing the books on top while she looked over at him. Life was pretty scary for the child, she could probably handle a book!
"Oooh, I should finish Redwall first anyways!" She avoided the idea of reading them as she replied to him. Life may be scary but she didn't need to add to it.

"Um. Yeah, that sounds wise." He dropped pens into their holder, shoulders rolling in a quick shrug, forcing himself to go more serious again. Ever cleared his throat and reached for the books, drawing them across toward himself. Protocol. Licking his lips, he settled back into professional mode, exaggerating it only a little bit for her benefit.
"Do you have your library card?" Both eyebrows raised with this and he held out a hand: palm lined and dotted with raised pale scars. Strange and relatively recent scars. "We'll check the one in and the rest out."

Ainsley had begun to sling her star-shaped backpack off her back, down her shoulders and within reach of her hands when Ever had asked her if she had her library card. Of course she did! She didn't go anywhere with out. You never know when you will need your library card, after all. It only took her a moment to nod to Ever before she began to dig around in the bag and eventually pull out a little card protector with her library card securely held inside of it. She didn't want to get it dirty, and carefully wiped her treasure off before she placed it into his hand, not noticing the pale scars against his very pale skin.
"I do, here you go!" She could trust it in his hands, he was safe to hold her treasured library card because he worked here!

He worked here and he needed it to ring her up: pausing to swipe in the first book and drop it into the bucket and taking a moment to page through other books she'd taken out recently to get an idea of interest. And reading level. If he knew what she liked -- well, it wouldn't matter for a while. There were a lot of Redwall books. Surely they'd keep her occupied for quite a while.
The motions of checking out books were automatic at this point. Computers still made Ever cringe, but he could operate on autopilot, scanning and marking and stamping the the front before he slid the books across the counter toward her, library card planted lightly on top. He leaned next to them, chin in his hand. "That it, then?"

Ainsley waited for Ever to finish, occasionally from him to the books as he did his job. It was always so exciting for the child to watch this process, mostly because she knew after it was done she'd have the book, or books, all to herself. It was a different experience having Ever scan in her books instead of Mr. Darrow. She was used to play with Dogby while she waited, and Ever didn't have a little doggy that followed him around the library.
It didn't take long and eventually Ever slid the books over to her with her card on top she looked at him as he leaned next to them. She took the card off the top of them first and carefully tucked it away with a smile before she leaned in as she got a good look at his face. "Thank you," she replied softly, sliding the books away from him and into her arms. It was definitely more than it. She could probably only be happier at the moment if bunnies started falling from the sky (landing softly on the ground).
"That is it," she nodded. "I will bring these back to you when I am done!"
She'd be back to see the white haired Mr. Alice again and with a spin on the heel of her shoe the child went to skip her merry way out of the library. She paused a few steps away though, shuffling the books in her arms to one side so she could put her backpack back on her back and pull her bunnyhood over her head. There was one more thing she forgot to do in her excitement and it was the most important thing. She turned to the front desk again and waved her feet arm.
"Goodbye Mr. Alice!"
That done, the child wrapped both her arms back around her books and proceeded to walk out of the library, small bounce included.
