Sanguina Cruenta PersianPapiiChulo CalledTheRaven Oh no, don't be afraid of energy work. There are a lot types of energy work that are basically mellow and beneficial. Even some forms of meditation are energy work. Right. Which is why I am forcing myself to do some simple stuff. Charging a necklace with protective energy, without invoking anything cuz thats asking for trouble, putting energy in my Sword etc. But having grown up reading all sorts of fantasy novels with things like the Law of Equivalent Exchange, or spells backfiring or wishes backfiring, which is worse, I was hesitant. Thing is, often when you're doing magic you're using your own energy. It's part of you, so it's not going to bite. Runes are outside energies that you direct. So if you're not familiar with them, and know what they are and feel like and how to direct them, they can overwhelm you. WAIT! I can use MY energy to charge objects? Even if my intention is to guard and protect someone?

PersianPapiiChulo WAIT! I can use MY energy to charge objects? Even if my intention is to guard and protect someone? Absolutely - you can use your own energy, and should for most things. You are effectively drawing off the energy generated by your own nervous system. Using what's already yours is certainly easier than trying to draw off of and manipulate energy from an external source. Attuning an object to yourself, in fact, is pretty much impossible to do with an external source - you want to imbue it with you, after all. You need to be aware, though, that if you create a protective object with your own energy, it is going to draw off you as a source when it is active. Most people prefer to ground when doing energy work, so as to have a source to draw on when they need to replenish themselves. Grounding will also imbue an amulet with a connection to that greater source, so it will not draw solely off you.

I should when I make my protective necklace, for my girlfriend, first ground myself(not sure what that means) and then charge it with protective energy? That way it draws from the other source too? It would be stronger that way too?

PersianPapiiChulo So if I am understanding correctly. I should when I make my protective necklace, for my girlfriend, first ground myself(not sure what that means) and then charge it with protective energy? That way it draws from the other source too? It would be stronger that way too? Not stronger - more like you're giving it a second power source, adding another battery. It won't output any more energy than you design it to; it just has more to draw from. It helps when you're enchanting things like this if you are familiar enough with the energies you're working with to clearly tell the difference between your own personal energy, and the energy you're drawing up from the earth via your grounding. Just don't put too much of yourself in the necklace. As long as it is active it will be tapped into you, and it will be a constant drain on you. Even if the drain is small, it's there - so be aware of that, and don't give it more of yourself than you can cope with or compensate for. If I were doing it, I'd only put so much of myself into the object to attune it, so as to alert me to something going on, and then charge the rest with an appropriate and willing external source. I have a page about grounding: http://www.witchscauldron.net/cauldron/center.htm

I dunno even where to begin with that. I will go ask in my thread so as to not lead this more off topic.

And a side note on charging things, depending on what sort of charge you're looking for I know a number of people that charge things by leaving them to sit in the sun or moonlight with a particular intent. And Fea, no problem. We're all here to learn and share right?

I was wondering, what books do you all recommend on Runes and Rune Making? Well informed, including the history, and not one bit trash.

The FiveCardTrick I was wondering, what books do you all recommend on Runes and Rune Making? Well informed, including the history, and not one bit trash. "Taking up the Runes" by Diana Paxson, "Rudiments of Runelore" by Stephen Pollington, and "Odin's Gateways" looks good but I haven't read it myself.

What Sang said. The Paxon book is a good overview but has an eclectic bent. Pollington's is a wonderful little book that gives some good context.
