A gift?

Crimson Tears didn't consider his strange vocalizations to be a gift. It was more like a curse or something. Still, he was flattered by her choice of words. It made him smile, if only slightly, and perk his ears in a ghost of confidence. "Would...would you like to hear more?"

He didn't want to be too forward. On the other hand, he also didn't want to deny Widow more artistic lines if she was interested in hearing them. Surely something would inspire him enough to channel his inner poet once more.

"Absolutely," she assured, "I do hope my saying so doesn't pressurise you and dry the well of your artistic ability, though!" A brief moment, and she laughed helplessly at her poor attempt. "That was terrible wasn't it? Should I - I don't know - " her eyelids shuttered, "should I help? Does it work if I give you a subject?"

"That would help, yes, but I'm already plenty inspired thanks to you," he admitted, standing to all fours again. For whatever reason, he wasn't able to recite poetry when he was lying down. Just as a singer required a lifted torso when singing, he, too, necessitated each hoof planted firmly on the ground. He looked down at her, nodding his head, as if to signal he was ready.

She was amused by his solemn statement and stern; good, it was this sort of confidence that befit the harsh lines of his markings. She unfolded with a lithe grace, tossing her hair as she rose. "Begin," she said, almost a command. "Your adoring audience awaits."

Crimson Tears nodded. Hooves apart, torso raised, he prepared to deliver a poetic line. At first, nothing came to mind; his canvas was blank. And yet, taking another glance at Widow…no, now she was Willow again, he focused on her gorgeous eyes and the words left his lips. Confidently.

Ah…blood-pooled basins, glowing amidst magnificent radiance. Pierce through the darkness between tousled vines and opal roots…

But he didn’t stop there. He couldn’t. His words, his passion, they moved him forward.

Red moon hiding behind frail branches…treading through twilight in quiet solitude…goddess of enticement, luring unspoken desires…

Oh, she was definitely impressed. The lines just fell out of his mouth like nothing, an unending trail of interestingly-worded praise. Alright, she was impressed and pleasantly flattered. Widow afforded him a look of awe, a tilt of her head, and at an opportune moment (when he had to breathe) complimented him. "That was quite astonishing. Amazing. You make my body sound far more beautiful than it is," she said givingly, modestly, knowingly.

"Pray tell," she might've winked, briefly, "what unspoken desires am I luring?"

Crimson Tears feared he would live up to his name when warm pools took to his eyes. He wasn’t normally so sensitive, but enduring such blissful inspiration nearly overwhelmed his poetic persona. Blinking his vision clear again, he addressed her inquiry in a slightly winded voice.

The desires I can’t adequately express,” he answered, swallowing. “You are temptation, taboo, and treason all wrapped into unmatchable beauty.

But he was average at best. Plain, even. He was merely an entertainer in her royal court.

"Crimson Tears," she addressed in a serious tone, "if I didn't know what a pure soul you are I would suspect that your artistic gift is just an incredibly effective tool for picking up does." She examined his discomfort with a playful look, and said, "thank you."

Widow sidled up to him, nudging his shoulder. "How do you feel about your poetry?" Her voice lowered, an almost whisper: "Does it give you...meaning?"

The idea of ‘picking up does’ caused a disturbance in the awkward buck’s stomach. He hardly talked to females as it was. Speaking to Widow was a rare exception – one he never saw coming. His embarrassing contemplations were suddenly interrupted when the nightfall temptress initiated physical contact.

Meaning?” he repeated, as if it were a foreign delicacy on his tongue. “I…I suppose it does. I can rely on it to prove my existence.

"It is important to you?" She urged. A strange aggression came through her softly spoken words - her body pressed closer, and the swath of red from her eyes and hair was suddenly oppressive under the moonlight.

Discomfort bled into Crimson Tears’ chest as he found himself backing away from Widow’s advancements. She had somehow become a little intimidating in her methods, and he wasn’t sure if it was intentional or not. Rough bark against his tail informed him that he’d backed up into a tree in his attempt to escape her spell.

O-of course it’s important to me. I have no intentions to die, if that’s what you mean,” he replied, wondering what brought on this sudden shift in mood.

She abruptly turned - her back shuddered with a sigh, and when she turned back, her expression was coy and welcoming again. "I'm sorry," she confessed, "but you should be too -" now she chided, "- because you have something special that makes living far more fascinating." An earnest look; only the slightest sliver of her prior harshness remained. "I must have frightened you terribly. I suppose that's the end to luring desires, then?"

When the storm passed, he was able to get a hold of himself again. Crimson Tears realized that he wasn’t necessarily afraid of Widow, per se, as much as he was intimidated by her sudden strong aura. She was beautiful the way she was, but when aggressive? He couldn’t even fathom the words that played in his mind.

He shook his head at the question and stepped forward, returning the earlier nudge to her shoulder. “Not exactly,” he countered, looking up into the night sky. His dark mane masked his eyes for a moment before they reappeared, a ghostly silver, in the moonlight. “The most poisonous berries are also the most alluring.

"You are strange and charming, Crimson Tears." Widow said, with a tinge of wonderment and sage amusement. "And lack a self-preservation instinct. Once bitten, twice shy," she warned gently, her tail swaying, "a saying you should think about."

She took a few steps back, and looked up at him through her locks. "That said, my poet, doesn't that mean if you know what the berry tastes like, you will no longer be inspired to taste it?"

The awkward buck considered the idiom for a moment and tried to arrive at a comprehensive conclusion, yet he was suddenly, and greatly, distracted by Widow's last statement. He felt a poetic phrase forming on his tongue, but it wasn't so much free-running prose as it was a single reply.

"And what if the flavor changes every time?" he returned, flicking his tail. "It's something to consider." Crimson Tears believed that even if he and Widow crossed paths again at some point in the future, he would be just as inspired and awed as his first encounter with her.
