He had a nice easy aura about him, Crysta decided as she looked at Deston. She could practically see the calm spirits flitting around him and basking in the peace he presented. Crysta turned her head a little to look at Jayke while listening to him describe the drink. It actually sounded rather interesting. She had tried some of the native drinks of Africa, so she saw no reason not to try this. Specially since it had such meaning to it! Crysta turned back to Deston and held her hands out towards him.

"I would be honored to share your drink then!" She cheerfully answered. A hot gourd tea, who woulda thought of it! It was a very curious sort of beverage, but it made sense that it would be shared in a gourd. There were a lot of those plants in south America right? "Oh I don't know Jayke. Isn't it our job to provide such information when the opportunity arises? I mean, we will learn about the tribes of Africa in world history. You could always share the info with the class by means of a report or a diagram or something. Knowledge ought to be shared by those that have it! It doesn't matter if it's a learning institution or in your own home." He happily shared her opinion with her friend.

It didn't occur to Jayke until he saw Crysta actually reach out her hands to take the gourd that perhaps he ought to warn her of the taste. It was definitely an aquired thing; he himself still had a little trouble taking it straight and had to have a little sugar mixed with his portion. It embarassed him a little; he used to partake of all sorts of tribal drinks as though he were a mature adult; now too many sweet things in his post-parents diet had made him a little sugar-dependent.

As he watched Deston hand over the gourd, he could barely contain a scoff at Crysta's words. "Only if the teachers are willing to take it. The ones I know are all just idiots who think they have all the answers, and if a kid tries to say something they don't know, they're accused of 'making stuff up.' Stupid bas......er, people." Deston laughed lightly at Jayke's flustered speech. "Good job, little dude; remember we have a lady present." Turning his mellow gaze from his foster son, he gave Crysta a wink. "You'll have to s'cuse him, sis; Jayke doesn't like The Man very much."

The drink was...erm...liquid. Yeah. Crysta sucked in a mouthful, then fought not to spit it out. Her eyes actually watered a bit as she tried her best not to show how much of a shock it was to her tongue. This was nothing she'd ever tried before. She was far more used to the sweetened juices her sister brought home for her. Somehow she managed to make the muscles in her throat relax enough to get the drink down into her tummy. Blinking her eyes a few more times, Crysta handed the gourd back to Deston and attempted to join in the conversation.

"Nnn...well. You could print out the info from the computer you know? Teachers don't call things made up when you show them a article from a magazine." Crysta had to sensibly point out while waiting for Deston to take the gourd back from her. "Th-thank you for the drink. It was...different." She decided to say, though she quickly looked confused. "You know. I just don't get that saying. I mean. It's not like there is a real man going around making all these kinda thoughts and suggestions and rules. It's lots of people. men and women. Who all agree this or that is for the best. And sometimes they do change their minds and they realize things are wrong and they try to fix them." She looked between the two males and shook her head a little. Silly boys!

The look on Crysta's face as she took a sip of the brew needed NO interpretation to Jayke. He was glad he didn't mention that the tradition also went on to say that when one partook of the yerba mate, that they finish the ENTIRE gourd! Poor Crysta looked as though she had barely managed her first mouthful. Luckily Deston seemed to understand, and was happy to take the gourd back and finish the rest right then and there, talking between mellow sips. "No worries, sis; the first try is the strongest. Little dude here usually takes it with honey." Jayke felt himself turning pink. "Aww, c'mon man." Surely she didn't need to know that her friend couldn't stomach the mate without sweet stuff!

Happy to divert the subject, Jayke shrugged and put his hands in his pockets. "Yeah well, I never thought I'd have to use a magazine or a computer for people to take my word for anything. People always listened to me when I was with my parents........no offense, Deston." He blinked a little at Crysta's analogy of one of Deston's favorite phrases. "I.....um......well.....well it....." He looked hopelessly at Deston, who chuckled and winked at Crysta as he finished the last of the yerba mate and cradled the gourd in his hand. "Well you see sis, The Man is a term for every man who wants to step on you, oppress you, and make you feel all out like a doormat people wipe their crappy shoes on, man. You know, like.....stuffed shirts? Drips? Squares?"

Crysta was very relieved to have the elder man take the gourd from her. She didn't think she could have managed another swallow of the drink. As honey was mentioned, she looked at Jayke. Though her expression merely brightened. "Honey huh? That would be a nice addition to the drink, plus honey is really good for you! You should have suggested it before I took a drink." She so easily remarked. With a small push of her hand, she reached out to playfully nudge Jayke.

It was so funny when he began to stutter. Oh how silly of him! Crysta looked with clear fondness as Jayke had to look to Deston to supply the fuel for his argument. He had...so many bad spirits fluttering around him. Like a little rain cloud. They were clearly blinding him. Well maybe she could help counter their efforts and let the sunlight sparkle through! She WAS a magical girl now after all! Crysta looked up at Deston, though her eyes drifted to Jayke as she answered right back. "But Sir. Doesn't that seem sort of narrow of a term that should be generalized? I mean, not every person who wears a buttoned up shirt is like that. There are plenty of them who only want to help. But if you forget about them..well that's just mean! I mean, they get clumped in all together. I'm not really..you know... educated when it comes to government and laws and the people who do all that stuff. But I do know that you don't have to be in those kinda jobs to treat others badly. Teachers do what they can, and sure some of them aren't open minded, but they are all just people and should be judged according to themselves as individuals! That's the only way to truly understand the value of a person. The spirits don't clump all humans together after all!"

"Yeah....I really should've." Jayke chuckled and rubbed the back of his head. Still, he had to reason, Deston was the one who offered her the drink, and he didn't really want to butt in and say that she ought to have it his way before she even tried it. Oh well; he knew better now, and all he could do was hope that his friend would give it another try sometime.

Instead of taking offense, Deston smiled a little broader as he set the gourd of mate down on a nearby dresser. "That's a pretty sunny way if seeing things, sis. Thing is though, when we say 'the man', we don't mean like a REAL man, so much as an idea. It's the idea of people thinking that free spirit is bad and we ALL ought to be the same and, like, follow the rules of one society. The Man wants to tell us how to do EVERYTHING, and how to do it HIS way, you dig? Me I'm not wearing any tie or square's pants, and you prolly wouldn't like being made to wear somethin' you don't like either." Jayke smiled and nodded. "I've sen school uniforms before at another school around here; no way I'm wearing THAT ensemble; I'd die of heat stroke!"

The conversation about the drink was in the past. Now Crysta was caught up with clearing away some of these clinging spirits. Deston seemed very nice, he also did not seem to have as much clinging to him the way poor Jayke did. Maybe he was just more mellow? He was from a different generation. Sometimes spirits were the sorts that grew with you and you could not lose them, they were spirits of memories and life experiences. To lose them would be to lose a part of oneself right? "I like to see the world for the good things, cause so many people forget them when they let bad spirits cloud their eyes." She firmly stated.

Crysta furrowed her brows, and then she rather finally and simply asked. "Sometimes doing something a specific way is asked cause, you know, it works. Trial and error is only needed until you find the right answer. Sure sometimes it is uncomfortable or you just may not like the way things are set up, but does it really hurt to accept that sometimes you need to do something by someone elses rules? I mean, yeah, we can always learn new things by not conforming to the expected. But when you go so far as to clump everything in together...well that's just plain ignorance. Isn't being open minded about being fair?" She turned to Jayke and half smiled. "Uniforms serve purposes you know? It's how we can tell who to run to when we're in trouble. Cops if we're scared. Firemen when there's a fire, medics in case we get hurt. If you refuse to wear the uniform, then people who don't know you don't know that you can help. A scared person isn't gunna just take anyone's word for it. So..maybe school uniforms aren't like that, but to clump a work uniform with a school uniform is..unfair don't you think?
PostPosted: Fri Jun 10, 2011 11:17 pm

Jayke was surprised to find that the conversation had somehow crossed over the line between comfortable and uncomfortable. Deston didn't seem bothered by it, but then again it took a LOT to bother his foster father. What had happened to all that stimulating conversation in the park that one day, where Crysta had insisted that they were so alike? Now he felt as though anything he had thought before about being free to do what he wanted was unfair. He looked helplessly at Deston, who only shrugged and smiled at Crysta as he picked up the gourd and began to back out of the room. "Ignorance is bliss to some, sis. I'll leave you two to sort out the rest. Feel free to come out for snacks whenever you like, m'kay?"

Feeling both a bit relieved and a bit sad that Deston had left, Jayke turned to look at Crysta with a troubled expression. "I didn't mean the uniforms that the officers and such wear. It's part of their job to wear those. But I don't see the point in uniforms for school. I mean, it's not our job to go to school; if it were, I'd quit." He almost retorted that he shouldn't be spoken to about fairness in life, but he knew that the words would come out angry, and not only was he not angry at Crysta, but he didn't want to make it seem that way and have her leaving in tears, or worse, having them get into a fight and never see each other again. "And I do follow rules; mother nature's rules. I think she knew what was best for us before any people started thinking they did."

"Bye bye!" Crysta responded with a small wave as Deston would take his leave. Crysta waited silently for the adult to leave, all so she could turn her thoughtful expression back on Jayke. His face had little wrinkles in it. Unhappy wrinkles clearly. Well, who liked to hear that someone did not agree with them? Crysta already knew that Jayke only saw the bad around him. How was she going to help him see the good in it too? Her expression remained thoughtful as Jayke would defend himself about uniforms and schools.

It was towards the end of his small explanation, when he spoke of mother nature, that Crysta thought she had the answer. Mother nature was the clue of course. Crysta's eyes brightened, and she stepped up towards Jayke. Without any hesitation, the threw her arms open and leaned in to give Jayke a bear hug. He needed to have the bad spirits chased off before she could share her own opinions with him. Otherwise he was just going to think she was blind like the others he disliked. "Silly Jayke! If we knew all the answers already then what would the purpose of discovery be? Even Mother Nature doesn't know! Otherwise don't you think she'd have kicked all our little butts around by now?" With a happy giggle she gave a small bounce on her toes.

It was just too contagious, and before long, Jayke was smiling too as Crysta scooped him up in a bear hug. Jeebus, her sunny disposition was easier to catch than measles! Though she needn't have worried about Jayke thinking of her as blind; even if she thought that uniforms and rules were good at times, she was still miles above the others in his own opinion. And though it irritated him a little when people disagreed with him, he was certainly not one of those thuggish types who would go into a fit of rage over it and end up breaking things....or animals. All he had to do was think of that one boy and it was enough to convince him that he was right about humanity. If even the children were so evil, what hope did they all really have?

Still, what place did such thoughts have here, in this time when he could actually be happy? "Oh, mother nature is a very wise woman, Crysta. She knows everything, she just chooses not to TELL us everything. Some things she would rather us discover for ourselves, and that's how we learn and grow. And she definitely has it in her to take us on her knee and give us spankings; why do you think we have storms and volcanoes and stuff?" He smiled a little at the thought; nature had a lot of scary things in it, but his own real mother had encouraged him to think of nature herself as his other mother, as well as his most important teacher. The ones lurking in the box of a school couldn't even try to compare themselves to her. "She's still the most wonderful mother, and the only one I still have since the beginning."

Good! he was smiling again. This greatly pleased Crysta. With a wink of her eye, she spun around in a circle and snapped her wand out. As she spun, she allowed a flow of golden light swirl from the tip and around her. In her excitement, she shifted back to her smaller form. The reason for this was really quite simple of course, she loved being able to dart around! It helped burn off the extra energy she often felt getting pent up. Crysta flew around Jayke's head, giggling as she did so.

"Well this is one discovery I had to share with you! I'm one of her spankings you know?" Crysta flitted before Jayke and kicked her feet in the air before her. "So now I need your help figuring out how best to learn and grow!" She shook a finger at Jayke and grinned widely. "I need you to cover for me!"

Caught unawares by his friend's sudden transformation, Jayke only had time to shield his eyes before the light shone brightly like a miniature sun, and there was Crysta-Butterfly, flittering about the room like a happy little bug. Which technically, she was. He stood atill and let her dance around his head like a moth around a candle, smiling at her whenever she flew by his face.

"Well if you're supposed to be a spanking, you're one of the nicest ones I've ever had!" Chuckling, he offered her his hand to perch on as he considered her words. "So, are you just going to dash around and do away with bad spirits, like a little superhero?" His voice held no trace of mockery, only curiosity. "And cover for you how? Do you want me to make excuses for you at school? I can try, you know, but they don't listen to me much as it is......your parents would be more convincing, but you probably don't want your powers getting too far out in the open, not that I blame you....." He paused and chuckled. "I can always tell the teacher that you've got a bad case of butterflies."

Flutterby circled Jaykes head one last time before alighting upon his open and offered hand. Being small was a wonderful thing. She got to see the world from a different perspective, which was something all people ought to try. At least according to her. The world would have been utterly more respectful if it could only be seen from the point of view of a insect! Flutterby flopped down onto her knee's and looked upwards at Jayke proudly.

"yup! I am a superhero! A magical one! I already defeated a nasty pink bitey spirit." She boasted, then pursed her lips thoughtfully* If you see any spirits that look like a renegade furby make sure you get away real fast! They are nasty things and only magical people can handle them." She warned him with a shake of her finger. When he questioned her about the covering she gave a small laugh.

"oh that is funny! But no need to worry. I only do magical stuff when not in school. And I don't have parents. just my sister. i want you to cover for me when I tell her I'm visiting you for stuff, kay? That way i can go out and fight bad things without worrying about her wondering where I am. Will you do that for me Jayke?"
PostPosted: Wed Jul 13, 2011 9:38 pm

Crysta may have been having fun seeing things from a bug's point of view, but all Jayke could think about as he held her carefully in his hand were the hordes of nasty little kids that he had gone to school with who took delight in pulling the wings off of butterflies. It seemed so hard to imagine her being a super-anything when she seemed so fragile. Still, she did have her bright light trick; if anything it could startle the dim-witted into dropping her if need be.

He had to smile at her description of a pnk, biting creature. "So it's a spirit, huh; not an animal? I've never heard of anything that looked like that." Still, he mused, he had seen creatures in his childhood that no naturalist had had the opportunity to see (still more fuel for his supposed making things up with his teachers), and such a creature could in fact exist. "Don't worry; I'm not fond of Furbies in general, let alone pink ones that bite."

Jayke nodded at Crysta's request; family of his friend or not, he didn't know her sister and wouldn't have any trouble lying to her as a result. He knew that his house wasn't the easiest to find, so there wasn't much risk of this sister of Crysta's actually seeking him out. Though he could definitely see the nudges and winks he was bound to get from Deston and Lillian when TWO girls started calling on him, and SISTERS at that. He would be setting himself up for some wonderful jokes, that was for sure. "I'll do that for you; you can count on me."

"Well, I had never seen it before until now...so I assume it is some kind of evil spirit." Flutterby admitted in a rather candid manner. Despite her small size and questionable combat skills, Flutterby honestly felt powerful. She had magic, a unique magic meant just for herself to use. She had a wand and wings. A super hero outfit, and a goal! Flutterby happily sat in Jayke's hands, unaware of his own personal experience with the cruel children of his past.

"If one pops up, I'll point it out to you I think, but then you'd have to leave so I could defeat it." She decided there was nothing wrong with sharing that much with him after all. "They eat people, so I don't want you to get eaten, kay?" She would protect him! Because he was her super best friend! Having him agree to her terms of covering brought another bright smile to her face. "Of course I can, cause we're family!"
