He waved off her apology with a shake of his head. "Please, do not trouble yourself further about it. I admit that the circumstances have left me... a bit too jumpy, at times." He actually thought he maintained a completely appropriate level of caution all things considered, but of all the things she had to worry about as of late, the last thing he wanted her concerned with was him. So if a little white lie might make her feel better, well, he had no problem telling it.
He shuffled slightly to the side as she approached, giving her space to splash herself off- though he consciously placed himself where the slow current of the water would carry any dirt away from him, he still appreciated that she stepped back before scrubbing her face. Her subsequent complaint about the heat merited a grimace at the unnecessary reminder, but still he had to nod in agreement. "It is rather unpleasant today- the water is only barely cooler than the air." Still, it was enough that he was rather glad to be in it, rather than up on the street. "Though I doubt there is anywhere much cooler to be found nearby, perhaps we might find a spot out of the sun, at least?" He could always hide out in the culverts where the canals crossed under the streets if he wanted shade, but unfortunately that wouldn't work for Tevadi.

"Huh? Oh, yes... shade," She mumbled quietly as she looked around quickly for someplace they both could hunker down under out of the sun, but finding it a tad difficult, "It'd be nice without the sun."
Tevadi hadn't noticed the sun moving across the sky and landing high overhead. She had been too busy with talking to Jiang of books and visits and the money he'd given her. She'd lost track of time despite the intense warmth radiating overhead. Shade would be a really good idea at the moment, because the heat was growing with the steadfast sun.
"Oh...," She mumbled, looking around a little more before facing Jiang again with a small grimace on her face, "All the shade is gone because the sun's high. Did you see any shady areas on your way over?"
He would possibly know, she was certain. He sees the world from a place she only glances from occasionally when she wanted to be clean and didn't think she'd get caught by the militia for swimming in the canals. So he would certainly know more about the water world of Cyrus than she did, even if she had seen many of the canal routes.

Jiang hadn’t really taken much notice of the sun’s movement either, more concerned with the conversation at hand, and his quiet, ever-present awareness of the few others passing on the street- especially when he was with Tevadi, it was safer to be extra wary of people, even as few as there were today. ”I admit, more time has passed than I had thought, it was much more agreeable earlier when the buildings cast shadows.” He glanced up briefly at the sky- naturally, there wasn’t a cloud to be seen.
His slight frown deepened as she asked after a shady spot, shaking his head minutely. ”Unfortunately, no. The only shade I have passed that would still be present is in the culverts when I pass below a street, but unfortunately that does you little good.” He paused to think for a moment, looking up and down the street and considering their options. ”Perhaps if we found a bench somewhat more solid than this-“ He gestured vaguely at the rickety seat she was crouched near, and how the wide gaps between the old slats let almost as much sunlight through to the cobbles as they stopped- ”Then you could sit beneath it for some shade?” He was more concerned for her than himself- as he’d said a moment ago, the water was just slightly cooler, and he could give himself a dunk every so often to keep comfortable. Plus, scales can’t sunburn either.
He grasped the edge of the canal and pushed off, drifting a few feet down the canal to peer further down the street, though he still couldn’t see around the next corner much at all. ”As I cannot recall anything particularly promising the way I came, perhaps if we continue on we may stumble on a more pleasant spot?” He paused, glancing back over his shoulder to wait for her, either to follow or make another suggestion- she was far more familiar with the city than he, but she had been the one to ask him if he’d seen shade, so it seemed they’d be searching more or less blindly regardless of who led.

Tevadi grimaced slightly as Jiang said he hadn't passed through any shady spots that weren't the underneath of canal overpasses as he went through the city. If there wasn't shade available around the canals, her best bet for it would be the overlapping roof tops down the smaller alleyways. The only issue with that was that those alleyways were not near the canal, and she'd have to cut her visit with her friend short.
She did not want to cut her visit with Jiang short. Especially considering how long it had been since they last had seen each other.
"Mnnn..., Let's... let's keep walking. Maybe we'll find something," She commented, although she had a feeling that she would probably not find any shade suitable for her without having to leave him. She'd just bear the sun and heat until she really needed to go.

Jiang nodded at her suggestion, though he hadn’t missed her earlier grimace- he didn’t have much in the way of hopes for success in their search either, honestly, so he opted not to comment on it. ”Very well, let us go then.”
They’d barely gone a block, with still no shade in sight, when a lady’s voice could be heard clearly over the relative quiet of the street. “Jiang-Chen! Jiang-Chen, we’re headed home now dear, please come along!” Rylan was standing some distance away at the next corner, dressed head to toe despite the heat in pale green, with a truly outrageously sized wide-brimmed hat for shade. She waved merrily as he looked over in her direction, but otherwise seemed content to remain waiting where she was.
Jiang stopped and turned back towards Tevadi, frowning lightly. ”Ah… That is my mother, it seems I must be going.” His frown deepened slightly, and he glanced several times between his dear friend, and his mother at the end of the street. There was obvious hesitation- he didn’t seem terribly eager to go, though there would certainly be shade in the car. He’d spent so long worrying about her when he hadn’t seen her, that part of him didn’t want to let her out of his sight again so quickly, for the admittedly real possibility that it would be months and months before he’d manage to catch up with her again. ”I... do hope that I will be able to see you again soon?”

When Tevadi heard the voice call out for Jiang she felt herself shrink reflexively. She hadn't expected anyone to be nearby, let alone his mother and usually at this time of day you're more than likely to end up in the path of the patrols or just unsavory people in general. Once she noticed the woman dressed head to toe in her fine looking clothes, she sighed quietly and instead of fearful anxiety, she was mostly just nerves.
"Your mom..." She repeated, her voice light with a curious wonder. It wasn't until she realized he said he needed to leave that she snapped back attention to him with a saddened look, "Soon? Y-yeah. I'm... I'll...stick by the canals..."
She looked between Jiang and Rylan apprehensively before mustering up a smile for him. She had been faring fine on her own so far, she would be fine on her own now. There wasn't any reason to concern him about thing.
"I'll...see you again." Tevadi said, shooting her glance back up to Rylan for another moment before running off looking embarrassed.

Tevadi’s initial reaction to the unexpected call didn’t surprise Jiang much- she had good reason, in his mind, to be wary of people. It actually made him feel a bit better- not that she was unsettled, of course, but that she was being appropriately cautious of strangers. He didn’t have much room to judge regardless- he tended to respond …poorly to being startled himself. Her reaction was far quieter and less embarrassing than some of his had been.
He nodded in acknowledgement as she promised to keep close to the canals. “As will I.” The corner of his mouth quirked up in humor- he had little choice in the matter, of course, but with a friend it could be made a bit of a joke. A quiet “Be safe.” followed as she scampered off- he wasn’t even sure if she’d heard honestly, but he felt it was important to say anyways.
He stayed where he was for a long moment, looking down the street with an unreadable expression until Tevadi disappeared from sight, before slowly turning and slipping under the water to go rejoin Rylan and head home.
