Was it empathy? Destiny? Or just caring enough to actually ask about Tui's most obvious feature?
Now she really did close the gap between them and touched her muzzle to the fur behind his ears, breathing against him. The gesture was not one of attraction, necessarily; it was a maternal maneuver, the way one might wrap one's arms around a sobbing stranger.
What made this strange was the wolf who executed it. Not even Lungaia knew what was going on in her mind that she breached her normal stone wall of defenses in order to extend comfort -- comfort, of all things! -- to a stranger.
"I've been looking for you," she said, and she spoke from that deep well of crazy in her heart. She knew that it was insane. But she also knew it was true. Somehow, metaphorically or literally or in that weird place where the two ran together, she had been looking for him.

The change in him was immediate. At her touch, the brittleness, the painful tension left his body, and it left him leaning against her, weak with sorrow, and weaker still at knowing he was pressed against some stranger, albeit one who knew him. All he could do in response was blink tears out onto the ground, in the most restorative episode of weeping he had ever produced: an honest sort of woe-is-me fit of tears, for the first time in nearly as long as he could remember operating out of tandem with its mate, the bitter voice that whispered, I am despicable. A small shudder twitched over his shoulders and neck, and he allowed himself to turn his head, and press his cheek against her chest. The presumption set his heart to quailing.

Ah, now, wouldn't this be a sight to behold, she thought. But the thought echoed in some distant part of her, some place in her mind underneath or behind all her other thoughts. Instead she rested her chin on top of his head and she closed her eyes and felt total stillness wash over her, just for a moment.
It's like the quest is over, she thought, and that didn't make any sense but that's exactly how it felt.
"You'll be mine, right?" She asked, and fell back a little so she could look in his eyes with her own raw, pleading expression. It was a strange question. She wasn't exactly asking him to be her mate, or her lover. She was asking his permission for him to be her possession, as though he were a pet, or a cognizent toy. Look what followed me home, mom! her tone said. Can I keep it?

He seemed unsteady on his feet without her, as if he had quickly forgotten how to stand alone. It was surprisingly easy, though, to meet her eyes, and the want that was there erased his options. "I'm yours," he told her, and felt a large and heavy portion of his life fall away from him. Nothing could be easier. I'm yours.
