Seeing as the boil was already in the water, Calder moved closer, swimming gently in front of him and smiling, making sure not to get too close else he might kick him. Ghost or not, he wondered if the poor boil would feel pain if he kicked him with one of his hooves. "You're really quiet. I thought you could talk? Are you shy or are you afraid water is gonna get into your mouth? Don't worry if it does. You can always just spit it back out." He dipped down and took a mouthful before spitting it out like a fountain. "See." The kelpie had no germaphobic worries about swishing pool water. He swam in dirtier water after all. Much more murkier than this.

"I didn't think ghosts could swim. Did you have to learn or did you just know?" He wondered if the boy would continue being quiet or not. It was a good thing Calder was chatting enough for two people.

Jove might not have spoken much, but his expressions often said enough. In this instance he started to frown almost stubbornly, only for his ears to perk up curiously as Calder spat out a mouthful. He had never seen anyone do that before! Thankfully the pup was also not worried about germs, he was fairly sure Calder wouldn't give him cooties. Even if he did wear a skirt.

The pup lifted his nose to scent the air. He wasn't afraid of getting water in his mouth, but didn't it taste bad? Salt on it's own was not very pleasant in his experience. Slowly his indignity over the whole not speaking thing faded, leaving behind only the curiosity. He could count having been swimming four times in his un-life, two of which were brief and accidental, so most of what Calder did was new to him.

He tilted his head, getting some more of his fluffy hair wet. "Yaya..." he said, meaning to say that he had to learn how to swim, and that Yaya had been the one to teach him. Unless... did a doggie paddle count? Because he could sort of do that on his own from the start.

Calder beamed at hearing Jove speak and also hearing Yaya's name. "Yaya! She's my vice captain of the swim team. Great ghoul. Really nice and helps a lot. I didn't know you were friends with her." He spread his arms wide as he swam over, using his hooves to kick the water down. Despite having no amphibian tail or webbed toes...or toes at all, he managed to swim with the same ease.

"She is really good with water. I think she's better than swimming at me." To which he rose his hand up out of the water and measured a 1/4th a inch wit his fingers. "...but just by a bit."

The pup flicked his fluffy ears to get some of the water off, and his expression took on a happier, less worried look. He didn't really smile, but it was easy to see he was set at ease by Calder's familiar talk of Yaya. Jove liked the ghoul too, she was really nice to him even if she did touch him a lot and give him hugs.

He let go of the wall tentatively with one hand and then the other, and began a sloppy doggy paddle before remembering how to tread water like Yaya showed him. It might have been childish but he really wanted to show Calder just how well the ghoul had taught him. And to his surprise, treading water wasn't that hard on his leg as he thought it might be.

Calder turned on his back and spread his arms open, letting his body just float. At least he was wearing his swim team trunks. His long hair spread about him like long, silver tendrils, and he breathed out, relaxing. "I love the water. Wish I could just sleep here all day or have classes in it. No teachers do water classes. Pity. I think it would be nice to float when someone is lecturing. It would be my favorite class."

He glanced back at Jove, smiling. "You're really good. You wouldn't believe all the times I heard someone couldn't swim. Can you imagine that? Someone not swimming. How do those people live?!"

The little pup listened to Calder talk, feeling more and more at ease with the boil. He had never felt quite so strongly about the water, but he could see why Calder liked it so much. He loved taking baths, and he was learning that there was something special about the feeling of floating around in the water.

He paddled over and flopped on his back as well, spreading his arms out and taking a deep breath that made his little stomach bloat up as though he had just eaten a giant meal. See, Yaya had taught him to float too!

The pup's tail wagged, accidentally propelling him forward so his head bumped against the kelpie's head. Startled, he let out the breath he had been holding and had to splash a bit before he resumed treading water.

It was the frantic splashing and moment of brief panic over Jove's features that had sparked Calder's interest, and soon he was looking over at the boil as he tried to get back to treading water. It had only been a recent accomplishment from a few months back that he could even be with anyone else in the water, and this close, and not want to drown them. He was getting better, much better, than where he used to just want to shove people into the water or even in a puddle if he was near it. It was panic and fear that always did him in and was hard to ignore, and he drank it up quickly when he noticed the boil's mild panic at splashing about before floating once more.

Can you drown a ghost?

The thought alone gripped his attention and he jerked up, dipping under water for a moment before bobbing back up and breathing a little more quickly. "Ah....you're still not every good in the water, are you?" Yeah, this wasn't good. Inexperienced swimmer near him. Was it safe for him to be near him.

Calder started to swim a little away, startled by the returning feelings of wanting to dunk someone's head under water and watch them flail about. Jove was very little, they were alone, and the boil didn't speak much. This was a very bad recipe for disaster.

Jove was unaware of the kelpie's growing desire to cause him further distress, and recovered quite well. His poor fluffy hair was all plastered to his head when he turned back with a blush, and it was hard to tell if his ears were down out of embarrassment, or simply the weight of the water trapped in his fluff.

He wanted to show Calder how good he was in the water, not how easily he could be startled! It was embarrassing. But he was clearly mistaking the kelpie for the patient and benevolent soul Yaya had been during their swimming lessons, and thoroughly chided himself for even thinking for one minute he wasn't safe in the water.

The pup sank down slightly, until only his nose up was above the surface, and tried to look anywhere but at the other boil. Maybe Calder wouldn't notice his glowing blush...

After intently staring at the far side of the pool for a minute or two, he shook his head in response to his friend's question. No, he wasn't as good at swimming as he wanted others to believe. Plus he was physically compromised by his leg's ache. A good drowning might not hurt him physically, but that didn't mean he wanted to find himself completely under water!

Jove was far too tempting when he started to sink, and yet admitted he couldn't swim well. Maybe...Maybe it was best Calder warned him, not to scare him, but to show....that he had a weakness. The last thing he wanted to do was let himself slip and then have his other side take hold and decided to trick the boil. This way, he could insure the other one knew what he was up to. Right? Then again, if he did say something, maybe Jove wouldn't like him. Then again, could you drown a ghost? They were such weird creatures.

"You can't drown, can you? Since, ya know, you're a ghost? Like....just saying, if someone were to dunk you under water.....and wait till you stopped flailing about.........and you went still...................." Calder looked at Jove a bit more deeply, seeming to smile at a warm, fuzzy thought, before shaking his head and looking away. "You wouldn't get hurt, would you?"
PostPosted: Thu Aug 25, 2011 8:57 pm

Jove tilted his head. That was a good thing to think about, could he really get hurt if he just stayed under the water? Without trying to keep his head out? There was something a little eerie about the way Calder was asking him, his keen senses picking on a tone or expression that made him feel a little bit more vulnerable than he had just a minute ago.

His expression changed quickly to reflect his internal thoughts, the sodden ears flopping back warily, his glowing eyes wide and innocently nervous. Could he drown, if he stayed under the water? If... someone did hold him down?

Calder looked around, licked his lips, and then looked back at the ghost. "Maybe....you should know if you can? That way, you'll know if you can get hurt when you swim. I could....maybe help you with that." He reached up, combing some of his wet hair before tugging at a lock. "If you don't mind."

Jove nodded, ever so slowly, with a hesitance that said he wasn't sure at all. It did make sense, but what if he did get hurt? The pup had a strong desire not to let his head slip underwater for too long that had been present even before his first swimming lesson with Yaya, but it could be nothing more than a lingering emotion from his past life. All the books in the library said ghosts had a lot of those...

But what if it was a strong feeling that served an important purpose after all?

The little wisp supposed that's why Calder had offered to help. If he did start to experience any terrible side-effects from just staying under the water, the kelpie surely wouldn't let him drown. A nagging part of him wondered why Yaya hadn't suggested trying it out... But he nodded a bit more convincingly anyway.

Calder was trembling, his legs kicking to keep him afloat before he let his body sink a moment, slidding down till his eyes hovered above the water, half his head under water as he let his hair float about him and look up at the small boil. It would be easy to hold him under unless he went into that ghost habit of going through solid things. There was no harm here, was there? He couldn't kill what was already dead, right? He wouldn't get in trouble, right?

Calder swam over, his eyes darkening as he rose back up, smiling. His heart was beating in his cheast, and he reached out to gently touch the boil's head, patting it and then holding it a moment. "All you have to do is close your eyes and let me do all the work. When you feel yourself drowning, just pull on my arm." Such a small boil. For a monster like him, it would be easy to keep him under.

"Ready?"
PostPosted: Sun Sep 25, 2011 7:47 pm

Jove jerked back ever so slightly before accepting the kelpie's touch. He was beginning to feel a little nervous, and for some reason he couldn't take any reassurance from the other boil's words. When he felt himself drowning? He might not have been consciously aware of the phrasing, but the subtle lack of an "if" was not comforting in the slightest. But he didn't want to back out now when it could reveal so much information about himself.

But was this really a good idea?

The little pup pushed the thought out of his head, took a deep breath, and closed his eyes tight.

If Jove wasn't already on edge, Calder wasn't improving that feeling. Just as the ghost closed his eyes, the kelpie leaned in to whisper into his ear. "Don't worry. I hear drowning is a horrible experience. It should be fun." Grinning wide, the kelpie pushed down on the boil's head before he could second-guess himself. Calder, on the other hand, did not remain above water. Instead, he let his body sink, releasing the air from his lungs and letting his heavy form sink down. Of course, for the ghost who was already under water, it wasn't going to notice.

Calder sank with his prey, smiling as he watched and keeping a firm enough grip to keep hold but not enough to pull the boil's hair. Then, just about 2 feet below the surface, Calder stopped and kept them positioned. The count down started.
