= Child of Circumstance =
Written & by: Erinn Ashworth
Climactic Scene Outline (Roughly 10 minutes): Situation: A turning point in the play, Charlie has finally decided to kill David (via Ricinus communis ) who, up to this point, has been stalking and attacking herbent on revenge. Furthermore, he has threatened to take custody of their daughter Gracie (legally) if she does not submit to his desire to have her as his mistress. David is a prominent lawyer and a well-respected member of the community, so when she (a stripper) threatens to expose him, he laughs in her face. Nobody would believe a whore over him. If she ever dared, hed challenge her for custody out of spite and of course would win. Charlie now has a plan: she will create a ruse in which she will seduce David (Femme Fatale), telling him that she has decided to give into his wishes. She has recently been fired from the Blue Halo, (Davids doing but she is unaware of this.) Her idea is to use her unemployment as a cause for needing him. (The audience at this point will not be aware of whether or not she is truly submitting to David or if this is a ruse.)
This scene takes place at Davids estate. She arrives wearing a trench coat over a sleek and sexy red dress. Her hair up, she looks like a million bucks. David who prides himself in his gourmet culinary skills has prepared a meal for them. The scene begins as Charlie arrives.
===============================
(SoundFX: Taxi driving off) Charlie walks up to the door and rings the bell. (SFX: door bell) David opens the door and smiles knowingly.
David: Finally. I knew youd come around ma petite.
Charlie: I just had to do things in my own time.
David reaches out to gently guide Charlie across the threshold.
David: Sometimes a child needs to learn the hard way. You have learned, havent you my sweet?
She nods. David tugs slightly on the sash of her coat. Charlie takes off her coat and he takes it from her, stepping back. He gestures for her to turned around for him, she does so. He shows only partial approval:
David: Yes . . . yes. But, theres just one thing. (David walks to Charlie and takes her hair downslightly pulling her neck back when he does so. At this point, he has begun to exert his control and re-possesses her.) Ah-there. I like you much better with your hair down. You know that . . . Dont you?
Charlie: (quietly, feigning timidity) You didnt give me that chance to take it down yet. I know how much you enjoy unbound hair David
David: Off course, thats my girl. (he kisses her, only a little forcefully) Well come on then, (Proud of himself) Ive prepared your favourite meal, Veal tenderloin with peppercorn sauce and Arugula salad
Charlie: Im a vegetarian David And I never ate veal even when I--
David: (he cuts her off sternly.) But its your favourite.
Charlie: (reproachfully) Of course.
David begins making his way into the living room while he points her in the direction of the kitchen.
David: Everythings ready. Well eat in the living room Oh and red wine. Itll compliment your dress.
Charlie goes to the kitchen obediently what we dont see off stage, is her adding Ricin to the peppercorn sauce for the veal. She still has no intent of eating the meat and serves him up his poisoned dish, giving herself only the salad. She brings everything out on a serving tray and joins him in the living room. He has pulled the blinds and lit candles. Red, to match her dress. Setting the tray down she hands him his plate and begins to pour the wine. He eyes her meat-less plate.
David: (irritated) No beef?
Charlie: Im watching my figure.
David who will settle for nothing but the aesthetically pleasing and in his mind perfect accepts this as a logical and valid reason. After all, he doesnt want his trophy putting on extra pounds.
David: Ahh yes. Your dress does seem a bit snug about the waist. Ill have my dietician work out a diet for you tomorrow. Cant have you getting flabby.
He waits obviously expecting her to thank him. Raising an eyebrow he addresses her, as if scolding a child who has forgotten their manners.
David: You would like that? Wouldnt You.
Charlie: Of course! (trying for sincerity) I want to look my best for you David
David: Perfect. (happily) You will look perfect ma petite chere!
She hands him his wine and stands idly, until he gestures for her to sit and start on her meal. She keeps her eyes downcast, he notices and tries to get her talking. He is a smart man, and by no means trusts her yet. He must make sure that she has repented and learnt her lesson.
David: (starting on his salad) Not that Im objecting, but what made you change your mind ma petite? You seemed adamant that you could do fine without me.
Charlie: (feigning awkwardness and embarrassment as she picks at her own dinner) I was wrong I cant -- I - Oh David I dont know what to do.
David: Whatve you done now ma chere?
Charlie: (looks ashamed as she sets down her fork) I lost my job.
David: And now you and that pretty little girl have no money?
Charlie nods her hair, fidgeting and picking at the upholstery. David, notices and gets annoyed.
David: Stop that confounded fidgeting Charlie and for Gods sake! Stop picking at the leather.
Charlie: (Sitting still) Im sorry I-
David: (He waves her off.) Its fine. I forgive you. Now What do you want from me Charlie?
Charlie: I dont know what to do
David: Yes, yes. I got that part. But what do you want? -- Ill tell you what I want You. So promise me that youll be a good girl for me and Ill make sure youre taken care of.
Charlie: What about Gracie?
David: If youre good you wont have anything to worry about my sweet. Ill take care of you.
Charlie: I will I promise David, I can make you happy.
David: Yes ma petite you can Ill let you prove your devotion to me after dinner. So eat up. (He finishes off his salad.) At least nobody will be looking at you. I swear You enjoyed making me jealous, as a way to tease me
Charlie: I wold never! I--
David: Dont lie. (getting angry.)
Charlie: (un-easy) I dont know what youre talking about David
David: (He reaches out and seizes her chin, pulling her face close to his.) Dont lie to me ma petite. I wont tolerate this kind of disrespect. Do you think Im stupid?
Charlie: N-no.
David: Then why would you lie to me?
Charlie whimpers as he squeeze her face within his hands grip. As she begins to try and pull away he kisses her full on the mouth and then shoves her away angrily.
David: I wont tolerate another man paying to look at you or be with you in any way Charlie. Youre mine My Angel. Understand?
Charlie begins putting two and two together. Via an earlier scene, the audience would already know that David is responsible for Charlie being fired. He twisted the club owners arm. They would also know, that by calling her Angel hes making reference to her stripper name. Charlie is now holding her jaw and trying not to cry. She nods.
David: Does it hurt? Im sorry baby. I didnt mean to hurt you but you see what you do to me when you lie? It hurt me Charlie. It hurts me to see you like this. You shouldnt make me do such things promise me. No more lies. Youll be a good girl for me? My Angel.
Charlie: (sniffs) I promise. I didnt mean to upset you.
David: Its okay. You cant help it thats why I need to take care of you, you see? (he strokes her hair, she flinches and nods) You still need to learn I will see that you do. You want to learn to be better dont you?
Charlie: I want to be the best I can for you
David: Of course you do. If you work hard I will give you everything youve ever wanted Charlie. You deserve the best. Im everything you need And in return I get perfection. Only you would do for me Charlie. Only you(he takes a bite of his veal and makes an odd face, quickly taking a sip of his wine as if to get rid of an unsavoury taste.) You Yes you. Charlie did you do something to my cooking?
Charlie: (shifting nervously) I tried a new spice, It was recommended to me by a friend whos dating a chef Is it good? I wanted to make it perfect for you.
David: Really? Well Id settle for nothing less Its quite tasty. Here, have some.
Charlie shakes her head. And he waves a piece of meat at her insistently. His tone dark and demanding.
David: Come now You need to know for yourself the effect this spice has For ******** sakes Charlene! One bite isnt going to cause you to bloat. Eat the ******** veal.
Charlie: (slightly panicked) No.
David: (Enraged) No? NO?!! Why Charlie? Why do you test me like this? What will it take to make you learn? You MUST think Im stupid to fall for this! (he throws his plate at her.) What is it? What did you use?
Charlie tries to bolt but hes on her, catching her by the wrist he spins her around and slams her down onto the glass coffee table, she screams.
Charlie: Nothing! Noth--- (he has a choke hold on her and begins cutting off her air. She wheezes.) Ricin. It was Ricin
David: I should make you eat the whole damned thing off the floor you stupid b***h!
He punches her, the force of the blow causing the table to collapse. The glass shatters, cutting up Charlie as he beats her. She tries to ward off the blows, holding up her arms instead he drops on top of her and starts hiking up her dress.
David: What does it take to teach you Charlie? Do you only submit when your underneath someone you goddamned slut!
Crying Charlie kicks at him to no avail. He begins undoing his pants, her hands close around a piece of glass. ((Lighting FX: Red special, red wash on the whole stage.)) She slashes his jugular and he collapses on top of her gasping. She rolls him off of her and lost in a blind rage, slashes at him relentlessly. She will not stop until he is unrecognizable. ((Lighting cue: Gradual Fade to black )) The scene closes on her terrified scream and hysterical sobs.
