Aella sniffed a few times, and stopped crying mainly. She pushed open the bag and grabbed a small cube. As soon as it touched her tongue, it melted in her mouth. She could feel her cheeks puckering with the sweetness. "That's...really good."
She felt a bit of a rush, "Is it supposed to make you all..." She searched for the word, "Happy? It's...amazing. She took another bite, finding it a bit easier not to cry."

A twinge in his facial muscles was all to show that he was fighting back a smile watching the sad mare become so interested in the sugar cubes. " They are" he agreed.
" Sugar...makes one happy i hear. I like sweets...." he mumbled, watching her brighten " good..."

Aella felt a rush to her head, a surge of adrenaline and exitement. It was both hard to describe, and good to feel. She felt like her body was inhabited by more than just herself. She'd never felt so alive--well not in a long time.
Sugar was quite a heady feeling, she could understand this stallions pleasure in it. No wonder people said love was sweet--that's the last time she'd had such a taste of this feeling. Even though it wasn't quite funny at all, she found herself giggling. "It's very good. Can one have too much of it?"

Marrow fought not to chuckle at the strange mare as she brightened up considerably and even fell in to a fit of giggling, his blue eyes sparkled as he watched her. It wasn't often he got visitors, living ones anyway, but it was nice to have...company for once. " Oh indeed...you can have too much of...well anything...." He chewed thoughtfully on a cube of sugar. " So you are feeling better....yes?" He stared at her from under a curtain of his own snowy hair.

"I do, I think. At least...better than I have in...awhile." She looked up into his eyes clearly. "Are you always hear offering sugar to those who need a lift? Or did I just happen to lucky enough to happen on someone friendly?"
She looked at him. He was strange, but wasn't she?

Marrow stared down at her and then smiled just a bit " i'm certainly...always here." He stared out over the rows of worn gravestones and rose bushes and then turned back to her " but i always have sugar...it's my own weakness you see..." he flicked an ear in thought " i do not get much company...here on the hill. It is much more beneficial to be friendly than...crabby...is that the word? yes..." He shook a strand of hair out of his face and in doing so rattled his beads quite a bit " ah...pesky strands..."

Aella felt a giddy rush as he tossed the silken strand. This sugar was really quite delightful and liberating. "And it doesn't bother you to be here?" She looked around. "Do you enjoy it?"
Strange that he should like being here. But to each their own...and he certainly had better ways of coping than she did. Sugar was quite the coping mechanism, she'd decided.

"Bother me?" He stared at her for a good minute, his blue eyes deep and questioning. He had never thought people would question his existence here, or that it bugged him at all to be near death. "...certainly not...it's what i do....graveskeeping." He shrugged, the beads all over him clinking and clacking " They deserve to be honored...for the life they lived, i do not see it as a depressing thing. The ones who die unnaturally...i sort of see... But yet, they deserve the same respect..." He tilted his head at an unmarked grave " My teacher...used to tell me that spirits linger for a long time after their physical body...has died." He picked a deep red rose with care and placed it upon the grave " I can not see spirits...But even so...I do them a service."
" I enjoy sugar and my rose garden..." He said simply " Graves keeping is a duty"

Aella sucked idly on the sugar as she listened to Marrow talk about "duty" and "honour". Where had her duty or honour been when he had asked her to leave? Why did she leave his spirit to linger somewhere she didn't know? Why did she leave him where he lied alone with no one to mourn him?
No grave to mourn. No one to leave him roses even though he deserved them. "Do you think," she could feel the sting of tears in her eyes. "Do you think it matters if you don't know exactly where they're buried? Do you think that somehow...they can still here us after they're gone?"

He stared at her for a good minute, his blue eyes searching for something before he answered. ".....I would like to believe...that they can." He flicked his tail, the beads weaved into the silky white of his hair rattling in protest " Sometimes...but that's only prevalent to spirits...that had....hmm...TIES to that place....dark spirits. But i doubt the one you mourn is among....that group." His brow furrowed as he looked at a few bushes with some bug nibbled leaves, he would have to do something about those blasted caterpillars..." In fact...sometimes spirits who are tied strongly to those who mourn them...follow that being wherever they go...shadowing them..." He glanced at her pointedly.

She felt her heart catch at his words. He had never been evil or dark. There had been no darkness in him at all. All hope that maybe he could still linger here was dashed from her heart and mind in a devasting manner.
Her mind tuned out in her pain, but something racketed in her brain as she realized what Marrow was saying. If their tie was strong enough...if...but hadn't it been? Was he really there listening? Was he trying to tell her something? Was he following her and lingering there beyond some veil that separated the living from the dead?
Her voice was soft and broke oddly, "Can you tell if someone is there? How do you know?" She could feel something coursing through, something that felt a lot like hope and a little like letting go.
Was this the truth then? She'd searched the world over and he was here with her always? Did it matter that he was here though really? She could not feel him. She could not touch him. She could not talk with him. He was gone...Maybe that's what she needed to understand. Maybe what she needed was to let him go, because even if he was here with her and even if there were fleeting moments that she could feel his presence--why make him linger her for her?
Maybe it was time to let go completely. Her voice was stronger, "How do you tell someone goodbye? That you're okay?"
