She had lost plenty and he was certainly being very bold in her assumptions that she hadn't. The only difference between herself and Beo was that she didn't wish it upon anyone and promote it through constant rebirth in an endless cycle. While she had lost a lot and had suffered pain in many respects, there was a certain level of morality required to give birth to cubs and condemn them to death simply for your own selfish desires. The parents wanted happiness and love? They could have happiness and love without cubs - they could embrace one another and enjoy one another's company, then die peacefully in each other's paws.
...At what point was bringing cubs into the world to be slaughtered at the hands of a plague considered loving? Illi was rarely offended by anything but there was definitely a level of disgust to be had in relation to this particular pride.
"And they said that hyena packs were immoral, festering hellhounds," she mused and raised her eyes heavenwards. "This is a whole new level of horror unto itself," she clucked her tongue and sat up again, the same look of disdain on her features - it was one that he was unlikely to shift from her anytime soon. "At least we kill off our weak young immediately and let the strong survive into adulthood. It takes a very selfish and callous parent to wish sickness, torture and ultimately death upon their own offspring..."
She shook her head again.
"And ye want to bring yer own children into this environment? To do what, to screw them up as much as ye are? Hell boy, ye ain't even got no sense of humour, there ain't not life in those eyes o' yers at all," she snorted and pointed her paw directly at him. "At what point did ye think ye were right and how many females do ye think would honestly subject their own pups to that level of emotion trauma?" she enquired.

Beo, who was by nature shy and retreating, sighed and decided that there were some battles you fought and others you did not. This was one he chose not to.
Why did he stay in a Pride that 'tortured' their young? Why did he stay and watch friend after friend, life after life end? His thoughts turned to his young Queen, who he had taught to play Rock-Feather-Seed, the smile for a moment lifting the sorrow from her eyes, and young Ruko who had told him all about if you ate a snake you better not eat the head or you'd have ingested a snake-who and might become one, or Eva who worked till she couldn't even stand trying to find a cure to the plague.
A gentle smile came to his muzzle, and he flipped his bangs out of his eyes, having his answer, and having no need to share it with the female above him on the ledge.
He turned away from her, his amber eyes looking back toward the mountains and his home, when he spoke, his voice was soft, almost not heard, " I never said I was right, or that we were. I only said we were dying. You made that assumption. Nor did I believe any females would, I only hoped..you see..hope is all we have."
Taking a breath, he steadied himself and gave her a small nod, " May your life be long and blessed Hilarion."
