Glory's eyes managed to take up most of her face as she skidded to a halt. Her stomach lurched and her heart thudded uncomfortably in her throat. She felt like she might choke on it.

Playing the hero had seemed like a great idea a few minutes ago, but right now all she wanted to do was scream, or faint, or run away.

But she didn't do any of these things, and instead she swallowed back her terror as best she could and ran in with a determined expression. She may not be able to do any damage to the bear...but she could help.

"Castor!" She yelled, skidding in beside him. Her enormous eyes were liquidy and dangerously close to tears. "Are you okay? Come on, we need to get you out of here."

Artemis ran hard but made sure that she did not loose sight of Glory as she did. One of her pups was already injured and she couldn't afford to let another one get hurt. As the huge bear came into view Artemis' heart skipped a beat. It had been a miracle Rainbow had made it away from such a beast to find the group but now she had to make sure Castor got away as well. She spotted her son atop a slippery rock in the river, his wounds looked bad, very bad. She let out a growl, that bear would pay for what it had done! As the group of wolves reached the bear, Hero, Winner and Lungaia, a stranger who had come to compete in the tournament but was not a part of the pack, threw their first attacks at the bear.

Meanwhile she watched Glory move towards her brother in the river. Much as she wanted to go and rip that bear to shreds Artemis knew that Castor needed to be taken to safety, and while Glory might have been able to do so on her own she would help - then come back to assist the others. Racing forward Artemis leaped into the river, taking advantage of the fact that the bear was hopefully distracted by the attackers to ignore her, Glory and Castor for just long enough. The closer she got to Castor the worse she realized his injuries were, she had to get out of here.

Coming up to the rock Artemis tried not to look as worried and frightened as she knew she was - it wouldn't do Castor any good to see her panicking. Once she reached the rock Artemis took hold of Castor's scruff, picking him up gently her eyes turned to Glory. "Go!" She yelled at her other pup around Castor's scruff. There would be no arguing about the command, Artemis was certain of it, but just to make sure she used a free paw to nudge Glory to get her moving. They had to get to safety fast before the bear decided to come after them instead of it's attackers.

Poor, poor Winner. Maybe he shouldn't have tried to go right for the bear's face for his first attack.

Sure, the first swipe at him missed as the wolf sped forward - but close contact allowed for the bear to get a very nice clawing at the male's shoulder in retaliation.

Luckily for the others, the bear was more focused on the brash beta. For now.

And another unlucky moment for Winner's Proof: the bear's long, almost jagged claws had kept purchase within his skin.

The bear roared and kept him in its grasp for a moment, deranged beady eyes almost glowing with hatred as it stared the fool down. There was an almost unnatural look about it. Worse than even bloodrage . . . It wanted to tear the guy apart. But upon wrenching its claws out of Winner, the wolf managed to get away.

Instead, the bear turned to another target.

It eyed Lungaia with the same, unwanton violent look of hatred. Hero was almost ignored. Blood began to pour from their collective strikes about its body.

She was probably next on its list.

But . . . at least Castor was all but forgotten now.

It was like a dream. Or a nightmare really.

One minute he had been on an important mission with Little Rainbow, and the next . . . this.

Where had it all gone wrong? He remembered a wounded stranger, and then a growl, and something muttered, and . . . and . . .

His small mind could barely comprehend how badly things took a turn. He jerked with surprise and fear at the movements of more creatures behind him, but his fear quickly turned to relief when he recognized the colors of the wolves flying past him to attack the bear.

And then he felt his sister beside him, worried sick. He shivered and nuzzled her quickly, feeling light-headed. His relief was quickly turning back into horror. "W-We gotta go," he whimpered in agreement, his wet form trembling from their precarious position. If they weren't careful when crossing the rocks, they would slip and fall into the current.

Like they needed more trouble.

"Sorry, sis . . ." was what he managed before his mother grabbed him by the scruff of his neck, which he barely reacted to other than to curl up in mid-air, closing his eyes from the ongoing nightmare.

He just wanted to be home and safe and not hurting anymore . . .

Hey . . . HEY. WHY WEREN'T THEY PAYING ATTENTION TO HIM. He was a puppy too! A puppy whose dad was kicking a** and going straight for the eyes and -

- and . . . and then getting a rather nasty beatdown from the bear. Immediately Conk's hackles went up, and he growled as loud as he could. "Nobody hurts my Papa and gets away with it!" he declared, approaching the bank with quick steps.

'Course, even someone like Conquering Hero could be afraid. And this bigass bear certainly fit the criteria for "things that could probably make him piss himself".

And he wanted to. By the ageless river, he wanted to.

But that would mean admitting to fear, and that would mean admitting to being weak. And if his Dad could take a clawing, then he could!

Conk bit his lip as Artemis quickly snatched Castor away from the middle of the crossing rocks. After she nudged Glory to leave with her, he gave her one look.

It read "You wanna do this?"

Maybe, just maybe, a sign of truce for the sake of some bear killin's?

"Bear," Rainbow managed to utter, his golden eyes bright with fear at even the mention. "I-I don't wanna say anything yet, 'til we get there . . ." He really didn't want to go through the whole story more than once. Thankfully, they wouldn't have to walk very far.

Gullwing had reproached herself many times over for having slept through most of the tournament, but had been surprised when she noticed that the premises of the Coliseum had been mostly vacated. What alarmed her more was the smell of blood - and one of her babies. The small she-wolf had raced, her heart pounding with as much anxiety as it was with exertion. By the time she reached the pair of pups, she was a panting, tearful mess of a mother.

"My baby!" she cried, licking his wounds and nearly bowling over poor Last Stand to do so; no-one should ever be in the way of a concerned mother. "Oh my baby, what have you done? What happened?"

"M-Mom . . . We need to find Oath and the alpha . . ."

Gull was beside herself with guilt and worry, and wordlessly she nodded, glancing at Last Stand with a nod of gratitude before she snatched up her son in her jaws. Once again, she took to pounding the the earth with her paws.

It was up to LS whether or not to follow and see what happened, or to wait for the group to return.

Lungaia - 20hp

Lungaia took advantage of the bear's sudden and violent aversion to Winner in order to launch an onslaught upon the bear. She moved rapidly, more like a snake than a wolf, and clamped her jaws upon the bear's inner thigh. She jerked, felt hot blood begin to trickle into her open mouth, and that switch in her thoughts kicked in, that berkserker's button. She was a talented fighter in her own right...but when filled with murderous impulses, she was hardly even mortal.

Kill it.

Hopefully the bloodlust faded before the bear did, or else she may well turn on her companions in her fury.

Glory HP - 16

"Castor, I'm so glad you're alive!" Glory said, and let out an anxious whimper.

Before she could say anything else, though, her mother swept in and before Glory could blink Castor was up in her jaws and well on his way to safety -- at least in Glory's estimation. She was still young enough that the idea of there being danger while Mom was around still seemed pretty far-fetched.

Her mom yelled at her to get out of here, and she hesitated a moment.

She could take that command one of two ways. One, the way she was sure had been intended. The other, which was sure to be way more interesting.

She threw her head over her shoulder to see how the fight was going, and caught Conk's eye. Well! If Conquering Hero was going to do this, then so was she!

Besides...he needed somebody to protect him.

Without hesitation, she turned and fled back down toward the bear, running full-tilt at it. Rather than allow her speed to slow her down, she allowed her momentum to thrust her forward and at the last possible second she jumped, launching herself at the bear's shoulder like a gray-brown-green torpedo. She clamped her dull little puppy jaws on the bear's furry neck and scratched at its shoulder and hung on for dear life even as the impact caused her senses to reel.

Just as hero had feared his rivals direct straight on approach gave some rather ill effects and Hero winced inwardly as the bears counter attack sent the dark wolf reeling - Hero wasn't completely sure but he was pretty positive that a splash of red had accompanied the other wolfs pinwheeling form....Winner was undoubtedly hurt.

But it was another flying form that really caught his attention "Glory!" He yelled at his daughter "Get away from it!" She screamed..though his daughter didn't seem to hear him and was now clinging to the bears neck like a small wolf parasite. Howling in frustration Hero attacked the bear again, taking advantage of the opening Winner had provided to slash a deep gouge in the bears flank.

Winner was indeed hurt, the dark wolf was sent spraling by the bears counterattack and yelped as he hit the ground, laying there rather stunned for a few moments before scrambling to his feet - well three feet really, one of his paws hs been wounded in the fall and a slash of claws along his side had left deep gashes and a smattering of blood upon the ground where he landed.

Despite his obvious dazed condition the dark wolf seemed determined to reenter the fight and stumbled towards the bear once more. Dizzy and in shock however he seemed to be having a hard time getting there and his angry bites hit nothing but air.

Blood. Blood everywhere. In its mouth, in its eyes, flowing like water out of its body.

The newest wounds drove the bear to cry out with such a volume that it actually physically hurt the wolves' sensitive ears. Its enemies were remarkably concerned with its flankside and backlegs, as if it could not reach.

The bear proved this wrong very quickly when it snapped Lungaia's tail in its jaws and forcibly yanked it off, throwing the wolf with strained muscles. Fur and skin tore off her own backside, and the bear took a moment to spit out the gunk, saliva tinged pink with blood and hairs still plastered about its muzzle.

But it was clear now that it was beginning to tire. One large paw swung at Hero when he dove in to save his daughter and clung on like a new fur coat, knocking him about the head, but it did not pursue the little one due to the expended energy needed to force the wolf off. The creature's bulk shook between its deep panting and shaking legs; it could barely stand up as it was, given the damage they had collectively caused.

Beneath that coat of beading hatred and blood, however, a sign of intelligence winked in its eyes. And that had not been there before.

It snorted and rumbled another growl, but watched them with dark eyes. It was almost . . . confused. And angry still. But mostly brooding, in pain, and utterly confused.

What had happened? Was the bear simply in a bloodlust as Lungaia was about to enter, and their attacks had knocked some sense into it?

And then, oddly, the creature managed to form one word: "Stop..."

Odd, seeing as how the bear was still quite in a ready position to strike back, even go back on the offensive.

[[ Damage to Lungaia: 8
Damage to Hero: 5
Bear HP: 22 - 3 bleeding = 19

You now have two choices! Continue to attack the bear, or give pause at his single word and see what happens. ]]

"Dad!" Conk barked with uncharacteristic worry as Winner failed to find purchase on the bear's bulk, immediately forgetting his just-three-seconds-ago promise with Glory to go at it with the thing. But Winner looked so beat up . . . The pup rushed to his side and gave him an encouraging prod, just as the bear suddenly decided to have a priority switch.

"Dad, you're okay right? You're okay?" he kept asking, voice cracking. He had never known that someone could cause so much damage with one blow, let alone to Winner's Proof. That's just not possible.

He bristled at the bear's word and gave it a glare, slowly forming an attack plan of revenge . . .
